Sad news indeed. I was lucky enough to have seen him play live a few times.

It's a major part of the news here in S Spain. Just been watching the TV news coverage here and we're expecting that there will be a number of programs about him tonight and over the next few weeks - perhaps they might show Carlos Saura's films 'Carmen' or 'Flamenco'. Oddly enough I was talking to some of the others doing post on the Miguel Poveda film about him just last week.

This is El Pais on him: http://cultura.elpais.com/cultura/2014/02/...092_307878.html

Only 66, that sucks very much. I first heard him with McLaughlin and DiMeola.. what that guy could do with his fingers was outstanding.

From a special news feature on Canal Sur just now...

There was 5 minutes silence in both Jerez and Algeciras at lunchtime in homage to him. Algeciras will also have 3 days of mourning for their son. Our local town is having a 5 mminute silence later at 6pm local time. Also, there was a nice interview with Paco Cepero* who told a story of how he and Paco went in to a guitar shop in Manchester in the 60s whne they were i the UK. Paco asked to see a guitar and the guy relectantly handed it over as he didn't think they either had the money or could play. When Psco stated to play the guy's jaw dropped and it ended up with the shop swamped with people trying to et to see who was playing.

*We were introduced to Cepero a few years back by the local flamenco guitar maker (and who also teaches my daughter ukelele) who made some of De Lucia's guitars.

That's too bad. I loved listening to his music. He was truly the greatest Flamenco player that ever lived. I've never seen someone with such amazing right hand technique. Condolences to all the people of Spain. You lost someone very special.

That news hit me really hard yesterday .. such a charismatic and classy player and person he was sad.gif

I was addicted to the "Friday Night in San Francisco" album with di Meola and McLaughlin when i was young. The finest G3 style acoustic shred album imo.

Weird, after years without following him, i just listened to this album a few days ago.

RIP Paco

He was a great artist, I had the luck to see him play twice, and he was excellent. RIP.

Amongst the various tributes this was performed at the main chiri last night in the teatro Falla in Cadiz and broadcast live on Canal Sur:

As a chirigota this is one of many amateur groups of friends who get together once a year to sing and perform in Cadiz province.
