Hey guys,

After a few months on hiatus I am back and ready to continue learning. Moving and college became a bit overwhelming so guitar kind of hit the back burner for a little while.

Anyway,

I need help with improving my speed and accuracy. This is the bump in the road that I've been stuck at for quite some time. I know basically to use my metronome, which I do, but I'm not noticing any real progression.

Does anyone have any tips that can help me out?

I'm not the best when it comes to these kind of things, but I've been adviced to practice slowly, it might be at half the speed or slower, till you can play it completely without mistake and then just push yourself from there, all the time playing things 100% correctly. It's probably a slow route, I don't know...

...on the other hand some people tend to say: "push yourself as hard as you can, above you limit, make mistakes, then back down and it'll feel easier".

Oh, and welcome back! I returned back in September I think after some years away from the site. Good to see some other old timers. Hope you stick around!

Thanks buddy, good to see you back! I came back around January of last year after about a year and a half away.

I've always heard the practice slower method and then gradually speed up. I try it and it helps me to a point but then I hit my road block.

I don't know about you but analysing my handiwork I have some flailing fretting finger issues, mainly descending than ascending though both need work in taming the ring and little finger.

What Rick shows and teaches in this clip, isn't glamorous or even fun to work on, and sometimes (within the first 5 mins) makes me want to give up, but it's what I need to do.

Thanks for the video man. I know that feeling of not wanting to practice what you need to practice. It's a rough road block.

Hey, Trey welcome back man! I have a couple tips that may help I think. The first is to concentrate on keeping your picking and fretting movements as small as possible, any excessive motion kills speed so it is good to try to keep the movements as small as possible even when practicing slow because that will automatically transfer as you speed up. Try to concentrate not only on small picking motions, but also try not to lift your fingers too high on your fretting hand when you are running scales and other exercises. The next tip is a little harder to explain but it helped me. When you are picking triplets try this out. It has to do with accents and can help make your picking more balanced. Instead of just picking straight up and down strokes, try to accent like this, DOWN up down, UP down up. It may help, it may not, but it seemed to work for me.
It doesn't have to be greatly exaggerated, but just enough to keep some balance.

I've always tried to accent the beats when practicing picking or other things. DOWN, up, DOWN, up for 8ths, DOWN, up, down, UP, down, up for 8th note triplets, DOWN, up, down, up for 16th notes and so on. You get the idea.

The topic is covered in Guthrie's book - very smart addition here from Mr. Rich! smile.gif It's indeed a powerful weapon that will help improve your picking. Guthrie was also stating something about triplets being picked as down down up, down down up and so on smile.gif Something related to one of Scorpion's guitarists out of what I can remember? It has a great resemblance to the irish jig rhythm pattern.

To be honest all 3 besides combo are lessons dedicated to beginners and intermediate players. They include a lot of essential basics. Also...it's very easy to fit those to the level You want just by using particular slower tempo backing track.

I get what you're saying. Picking 16th notes at 180 bpm doesn't seem beginner stuff to me though tongue.gif

Thanks Cosmin, :)Very interesting about that down down up, down down up thing, kind of reminds me of a drumming rudiment called
" The Single Paradiddle" where the strikes go. R L R R, L R L L repeat. smile.gif
