Hi

I have had Pod Farm for a while now and experimented with it quite a bit but have never really created a tone that I really liked. I was playing about with it last night and was changing settings on the 4 band semiparametric EQ. I was just wondering is there a general rule to go by in which frequency range you should stay in. Also with the preamps is there also rules to follow regarding dialling in settings or simply things to avoid doing.

Cheers Sean

Hi Brandon

Yeah about 80% of my saved tones are done with experimenting with other peoples tones. There just seems to be something missing all the time with my tones. I think I like my amp to much but every now and then I try getting back into pod farm and just have the same problems. Maybe its just not for me

It may be your choice of plugin smile.gif Pod farm is great at what it does well. But if it's not tickling your fancy, I'd suggest trying OVERLOUD TH1 or TH2 if you haven't so far. I've tried them all and none of them do it for me quite like overloud.I I've created wads of patches you can start with as have other folks.

However, not every plugin is best for everyone so if overloud doesn't do it for ya, try SCUFFHAM AMPS and then if thats no good, try AMPLITUDE FREE and GUITAR RIG FREE.

QUICK TIP:
9 times out of 10, when I'm training students on using sims, they are not hitting the sim with enough level or are using too much. Both ruin your tone. You have to hit the sim with enough level to punch the distortion without redlining the input. That alone may fix things a bit smile.gif

Also, please share an audio example of your patch via soundcloud so we can actually hear it?'

Todd

Hi Todd

Thanks for your advice. I have have tried most of the plugins. To be fair I have not spent a lot of time on all them and have only had the limited available trial pack.I think my problem is I don't like to spend to much time on creating tones as I feel that its taking me away from actually practicing guitar. Then when I listening to people playing guitar on YT with tones that I think sound really good and they are all using plugins it makes me want to try work with the plugins again

Your quick tip may actually solve a lot of problems. Is that also what Misha Mansoor was talking about in the recording tips video you posted

Here is a little sound sample from the last lesson I learned

Todd might be right, PODfarm is probably quite outdated compared to newer, more realistic VSTs/plugins these days. I use Scuffham Amp's S-Gear 2 as well, and it's the best one I've played for clean/medium gain tones with dynamics. For high gain, lately I've been using Peavey's Revalver plugin to get some pretty convincing 5150 tones!

Actually, that's probably an important point - what kind of music are you making, and what kind of tones are you trying to get out of PODfarm?

Better smile.gif I know what you mean about taking time away but tone is honestly a crucial part of your sound. So it's worth spending some time on smile.gif The default patches are usually pretty awful IMHO on most plugins. But learning how to build great pacthes is an art. I love doing it actually smile.gif I usually do it while doing something else I was going to do anyway like watch a movie. Then I can practice a bit, and make tones while I watch smile.gif

Hi

I am mostly trying to get the tone close to the lessons I am working on it at GMC.So pretty much ranging from nice soft warm tones to full on gain tones. smile.gif

I did the same thing when I first switched to plugins from my tube Laney amp,I had to just stop using the amp altogether until my ear sort of developed to the plugin tones, so to make it simple - don't keep going back to your amp for a while

Well thanks!! smile.gif I LOVE guitar plugins smile.gif I found out a while ago that I can get much better tone on recordings using sims than with amps in a home recording setting. I mean, I could get great tone with an amp, but getting it back in to the computer and having it cut through the mix without recording at volumes that would get the cops called was really tough.

For MID GAIN tones, try the SCUFFHAM AMPS plugin that SAMURAI MENTIONED!!

Mate, after you finish your practice schedule tasks, I would suggest you to try these two:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Metal-Metrics-4/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Disturbed-Style-Riffing/

They focus on groove, clean playing and tight riffing without too much complicated stuff, but they will solidify your feeling for groove/timing and articulated rhythm playing within the drop C tuning wink.gif

I have already tried Scuffham Amps so my trial has expired. I might just buy it as it is only $99.I also have TH2 which I am trying out again smile.gif

Do you have the TRIAL or FULL VERSION of TH2? If you have the FULL VERSION you can grab my presets from the lesson thread as a starter smile.gif Every week I put up a new preset. Here is the link to the last one.

http://bit.ly/gmclesson266

The trial version won't let you use custom presets of course but it will give the general idea smile.gif

Try the overdrive pedal trick too smile.gif

Todd

Pod Farm is great for what it is & I like & started with Pod Farm myself but the GMC resident Amp Modeling Tone Guru Todd Simpson converted me to Overloud TH2 & I am truly happy smile.gif about it. I haven't downloaded half the TH2 presets Todd has created but he really makes some great presets so I highly recommend downloading as many as you can & try them out.
