Awesome!! Thanks a lot for sharing this mate! I'm listening to the first song and it's awesome. They have a lot of energy, and everybody kills his instrument.

I'll watch the whole concert, thanks!

I haven't played much for 2+ months. You know some of the reason from your thread about goals, but yesterday and today I have worked on making my studio/music room nicer smile.gif I still need to upgrade some things, but it's getting better and better smile.gif

It's very much a one-man workspace though. I had a friend here one day in the summer and I didn't even have the drums at the time, but even so it was very crammed to be two guitarists in here. I think it could work now, as I have moved things around a bit and optimized the space better smile.gif

Yep! It's coming along and it's great to have a room such as this smile.gif Hopefully things around me settle down a bit and I can get properly back to playing soon. Having an inspirational space is great, indeed! smile.gif I still need to fix a few things in here, but Rome wasn't built in a day.

If I can't sit down and relax with guitar, at least I can maybe get some frustration out by drilling holes in the wall for things like hooks, computer monitor etc laugh.gif

Sorry for this rather long following post, Gabriel. If you have the time to read it, that would be great, but I am not gonna force you smile.gif

I think I just had an epiphany in relation to a lot of things in my life. Let's hope I can follow through.

I struggle accepting small steps and small goals. I can set them up, I can knock them down on occasion (if I get that far), but most of the time it feels like a "failure" to me. Instead of putting 3 chords together on the piano and accepting that as good, it is not a success unless it becomes a full song. But you gotta ACCEPT the small steps. One thing is setting up them, writing them down etc., but if you don't accept that that you need to take the steps, then you end up sort of aimlessly drifting.

Another example is that I used to play football, and I used to be in amazing shape. I think I told you before I first time destroyed my anterior cruciate ligament (bad injury) when I was 13. By that time I had football training 5 days a week and a match in the weekends. I played with the best team in the club AND with a talent team consisting of a collection of around 25 players selected as the best from Fyn (see map below 1*). Some got selected for the national under 14, some got to trial in England for a lower division team for a week. I got injured before I had that chance. I probably wouldn't make it, but I would have worked my ass off, as I already did by then. Besides the 2 hour training sessions 5 days a week, most of us also played outside of that, usually 3 hours after school - also during school whenever we could. Football was my one true love. It still is, I think. I would sell everything I own and I would give everything to be that 13 year old again and not get injured...

1* The island in the middle that says Odense/Svendborg is the island I lived on at the time, population of about 500 000, but of course not all are aged 12-14 and play football.

...I tried a few comebacks, but I could not play because of the pain usually. I had first "real" surgery when I had just turned 15 (they had done an arthroscopy about 9 months earlier), then a year of rehab and then playing at 16, but it didn't feel good. At 18 I tried at a very low level again with some friends, but I got badly injured with my knee after about 6 weeks. At 21 I tried again, but 3 weeks in I fully ruptured my anterior cruciate ligament again (the one that had been reconstructed before). First 3 months rehab to strengthen the knee to avoid more rehab after, then an operation including "filling" holes from old screws, then half a year of wait/rehab, then another operation, then 1 year of rehab. Then I started playing again, and it felt alright. At least better than before. A year later my other knee started hurting more and more, and it ended up with me needing surgery on that too - to remove damaged part of the plica. I was also told the cartilage in my knee looked like "crab meat" which is sort of lay man term for "Stage III chondromalacia, deep creases, detached cartilage areas, decreasing cartilage thickness and abraded areas paint a colorful picture of the increasing joint destruction", basically at that stage it is not repairable and you are on your way to "bone on bone" or osteoarthrisis. Well, I tried playing again, but it never felt good, so I gave it up. I still dream of playing (just in the park), but I have gained a lot of weight and my knees have gotten worse since I was 26 (30 now), so it's probably not happening, but one can dream.

To add to story of being fit when I was younger I also participated in the Danish championship for "kids' triathlon" and won. It is not great distances, but off the top of my head 200 meter swim, 10 km bicycling and 2-3 km running. It's hard to find the records online these days, and the list where I was on has long since gone. I have not found anyone with a better time than mine though - the qualification time that got me into the finals seem to still be one of the best. But again, I was 13 (but looked 16-18!) so it's hard to compare with being an adult. Especially as I got injured shortly after.

Well, that was sort of a background story. Even 10 years ago I was able to go out and ride my bicycle for 100 km. I did that a few times. It was tough, yes, but doable. Last summer I went out to see how it felt just riding a bit. After 5 km I was so tired, out of breath and my muscles aching that I could hardly get home. And I have a hard time accepting that my goal now must be 3 km. Or just going for a walk would be fine.

I can hear myself tell my friends all the good advice I don't follow either. "If you just go to the front door of the gym, open the door, go in and go straight back out and home again, then you have done good! That is the first step" is what I will tell them, or many other things that take small steps, which are totally okay. It's also okay to just go in and out that door 5 times.

Now where is this going, you might think? Well, guitar!

So I have often set up tools and build great castles in the skies of sitting down and practicing 2 hours fully focused each day. I have made plans and schedules (there's one about half way through this thread, I think) that have held each topic related to guitar.

Sometimes I get the idea of thinking "the tool isn't working for me!" instead of using the tool in a way that would work for me, if that makes sense. Sometimes because I want to take those giant steps and not the small ones. I want to have that whole composition envisioned in my head instead of those 3 chords on the piano, before I write, compose or record anything. It's not a very healthy way of thinking.

My first step was last Friday to accept that it was okay to be at some place for 1 hour and then go home (there are no expectations from them, only my own expectations. I could be there only 10 minutes, no one would say a thing about it), instead of blaming myself, hitting myself in the head, telling myself it's not good enough. But it was good enough and it felt fine. It felt like the right decision.

So I want to bring back that practice schedule I made some years ago, and I want to use it in a different way and with a different mindset. Not to say: "I have to do this exercise 10 minutes" or 5 or 2. If I do it 10 seconds, then that is okay too. It is better than nothing, you know? And I kinda felt okay today thinking about that. If I can go from practicing an exercise 10 seconds to practicing it 30 seconds a month later, that's progress. I can't build castles in the sky (impossible goals and dreams) and blame myself for not reaching them when I keep telling myself I am not doing this or that good enough.

As you know I have been cleaning up my studio, at least getting this space more inspirational and with less distraction in a way - so there are less excuses of "well, the cables are messy, so I can't play!".

So here is my plan: next time I feel like it (it could be today!) I will sit down and sort my practice schedule out. It is okay if it isn't today or tomorrow or this week. Acceptance that I have had a flawed logic in relation to these things (to my progress, personally) is the first step. Others will benefit from different things such as harder discipline etc. Anyway, acceptance of it being okay to just approach the guitar, play 2 minutes and put it away for a week if that is what I feel like. Yes, I won't become the next Steve Vai that way, but I won't become that either from telling myself I do everything wrong and consider almost every move a defeat.

For me I find that accepting my situation is the first step. From that acceptance I can build and lay the first stones for a good foundation, instead of telling myself I don't do this or that good enough, because I don't accept the situation. That way has only taken the foundation and brickwork more and more apart.

Acceptance is the first step. That is where I am now. And it is okay to be here, there are no limit to the amount of time I can stay here.

This is something from another thread talking about patterns and writing proggy riffs. I only just spent 5 minutes with it, so no real chord changes. It could move to some other chords, but for the 5 minutes I put into it, I actually don't think it's too bad laugh.gif

Hi mate, I really agree with your thoughts here and I think that this is the way to go. You don't have to be the next Steve Vai, you have to be Cael, so you need to find the natural way of doing things. That's the only way to grow as a person and as an artist, and that's what people likes from their idols. Be yourself, and be honest with yourself.

Thanks, Gabriel. I'm sorry for having written such a long post. Things have been pretty bad lately and I have had a need to talk about them, here's to hoping things can be sorted as soon as possible, though job center wise etc. it will be at least another year, but maybe 5. Fingers crossed for 1 smile.gif

Now I wanna at least play a bit of guitar again smile.gif

Let me know if you have suggestions for the practice log. I'm trying to keep it in relation to what I wrote earlier, "acceptance" being a key word. Of one self and one's situation.

Hi Cael! Yes! It looks great! Are you already using it?

I personally use Trello for my own practice and also for my private students. There I build routines and upload everything needed to practice (exercises, pdf, guitar pro, backing tracks, youtube links). This doesn't replace your practice log, but it can be used combined.

What do you think?

Hi Cael! Yes! It looks great! Are you already using it?

I personally use Trello for my own practice and also for my private students. There I build routines and upload everything needed to practice (exercises, pdf, guitar pro, backing tracks, youtube links). This doesn't replace your practice log, but it can be used combined.

What do you think?

Good idea! smile.gif That means I can keep track of exercises too that will be notated in the log! I haven't started using it yet, as I haven't really played (99% of energy going to other energy-consuming things), but I feel like I am nearing that place in my brain where I can play a bit again. I am trying to make things as easy for me to do as possible - i.e. no mess in the studio, so less cleaning to do (or make cleaning the studio as easy as possible by having no cables (from computer, e-drums etc on the floor). Generally I am spending some time now doing some things that will hopefully benefit me in the long run. And it's actually nice spending some energy drilling holes in the wall or banging a hammer on a wall. It releases some tension in a different way - sort of similar to kicking a ball, which I used to be able to do smile.gif

I was talking to a friend of mine and I showed him this "song" I wrote in 2009.

Attached File  00._Prologue.gp5 ( 108.37K ) Number of downloads: 41

And he said: "This needs to be recorded right now!", so I started making a backing track for it. I also need to learn the parts (and re-arrange fingerings in the file to remember the parts), but I made the backing (no guitars) just now:

Attached File  First_Contact__backing_.mp3 ( 10.6MB ) Number of downloads: 45

I think this could be a cool song smile.gif

Hi Cael!! This tune is VERY promising. I like the chord progression and also the drum rhythm. This track definitely needs to be finished!

The collab is turning great as well!

Hey Gabriel. Do you keep files you have downloaded from here in a folder on your computer? Could be just a regular download-folder? I once uploaded this file from this post: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...st&p=756396

But I don't have it on my computer anymore. I have searched everywhere smile.gif It's okay if you can't help, but I thought I would ask smile.gif

Hi mate! Maybe I have it in my studio computer but I won’t be there to check it for some days.

I’m now using my laptop. Do you need it soon?
