My answer would be YES smile.gif

I have relatively recently composed some tracks for TV (mini series of educational related TV programme).
It was really fun and I'm starting to like this form as its something I only did a few times in the past.

You really change the way you think when you have a 20 seconds piece to compose, usually for show's intro and outro (credit sections) parts. The way I have approached is to make up a short theme which starts immediately and has full development in the short amount of time. Similar to writing a chorus part of the song.

Hmmmm, you know, building up the right arrangements is very important - I usually try to see that the lines I deploy as themes are bringing a slight flavor to the song or, opposed, there should be a very pungent theme that is meant to stick to the listener's memory. But I never play too many themes or develop them more than up to a point. There's a lot to talk on the matter, so I would be curious to ask you how you write your themes and the leads in a musical context in which you also have to sing?

For me, when i write vocal melodies, i'll turn on a recording device and just noodle on the guitar at first. I'll usually come up with several ideas this way. I also like to hum, whistle, or sing a few as well. My voice comes up with different melodies than my fingers would. Then i'll go through them and find which one i like the most, and which ones would lend themselves to lyrics better.

Coming up with the ones in your head, in my opinion, is the most honest way to do it, in respect to getting your personality out there smile.gif Usually, when you start writing with the guitar, you will be VERY tempted to play what you already know, but when you sing/hum, you can't use 'positions' or 'licks' wink.gif

Try to experiment a bit more in that direction and I am certain it will serve you a lot smile.gif

Here are two raw mixes of stuff I did 2 years back :

https://soundcloud.com/bogdan-radovic/remember-me-intro

https://soundcloud.com/bogdan-radovic/remember-me-outro

I don't have the permission to share the latest one, it turned out quite different.
The show will be broadcasted daily on the national TV.

Very nice ideas Bogdan smile.gif I was always wondering how it goes with composing soundtracks. Have you first watched the shows/documentaries in order to try to get some inspiration from there, or how did the process go for you?

Very interesting stuff Bogdan! Both tracks generate a mysterious atmosphere. One thing that we had been discussing at my Creativity Workouts is that composing music based on a photo or video can help us to create deeper music, which reflects more intense feelings. Did this happen to you? Do you find a difference when you compose music for image?

It seems that both me and Gabi share about the same question smile.gif I realized that it's easier to build something creative when you have limitations - i.e. an image to try and re-create, a feeling and aside the visual, olfactive things, you can also have limitations imposed on technique or approach or compositional/orchestration elements. Now, it got me thinking - how would you guys describe a smell - musically, of course? smile.gif

Those tracks were done knowing the theme of the show and title.
I tried to imagine an opening music sequence for such programme. Also, I remember that I was under influence by some Discovery channel music, therefor I used the trumpets theme.

Here it is with the demo version of the video for it : http://vimeo.com/24557571

The latest track I did was done other way around. There was already built intro video with generic music.
As the video had specific moments I first found the tempo of the track to use and where moments in the video which need "accent" happen so I can sync the music with it. I came up with a short theme for it and it worked out very well.

I used the theme of the show, the provided video to get the atmosphere down. It was about world ecology and issues with "green living" so I made it a bit dark which then goes into nostalgic kind of theme. Interesting experience for sure! I'm not sure what I like more - writing on a completely blank paper or having to fit the music to certain title/emotion/video. Both are challenging. What I found in the end, comparing stuff written on "blank paper" and per specific "mold" to fill - it sounds like me and clearly shows my music composing preferences, choice of instruments, style etc.

Very cool sounding tune! smile.gif

I love the atmosphere and the solo is really fresh sounding and fits the tune well, not overplaying or anything.
What I'm slightly missing are more dynamics in the tune, maybe try having some sections with only a few instruments and sections which "explode" in full arrangement with some keys or additional instruments (to give the impression of the chorus).
Looking forward to hearing the final version.

How do you record your guitars?

Interesting stuff Bogdan, thanks for sharing your experience with this. I hope that this is the first of many other works like this one. And who know, maybe you will end composing the soundtrack for a movie. That's something that I would love doing. It must be a beautiful experience.

Very interesting thoughts from Bogdan - as for my 2 cents, I discovered that whenever I impose some limitations on myself, I can get creativity to flow. Whenever I get the 'you are free to do what you like' I kind of block myself. It's silly, I know, but that's how I function smile.gif

Yeah - I have noticed this many times! smile.gif

Thinking about it, I also like to write "in the frame" as opposed to getting a blank sheet too! wink.gif

Same with papers writing in the school, it was always easier for me to write an essay on a topic I was given then to start from scratch.

The way I try to overcome the "blank paper issue" is to make up a sort of frame for myself, even before I start writing.
I would try to imagine the atmosphere, then set the tempo and try to get the vision of the structure of the song even before I grab the instrument. Most importantly, I decide on the style of the song (is it a funky, uptempo tune or a moody alternative rock ballad?). That way I already have some boundaries to work within even before actually composing anything.

yeah, it's true that it's very difficult to start from nothing. In my case, sometimes a feeling can be enough as a starting point, but some other times I need to decide on other things like style and tempo to be able to start working on something.

However everything is different when anybody else asks for something more specific. I go for it in a very fast way, it's awesome how it works...

It's like an equation really smile.gif the more values you know, the easier it gets to solve it. For instance, yesterday I had a gig with the Pantera tribute band and the guys told me at the last minute, that I will have to improvise a solo over the ending part of Planet Caravan. I was VERY short on time and I had to think of something quick - since the harmony is pretty simplistic - 2 chords all the way, I invented two- three phrase models that I juggled with back and forth, changing a note here placing a rest there - I knew the phrase concept and I variated it as the live setting and mood dictated while trying to build up an appropriate atmosphere, tried to keep it short, but sweet smile.gif I will post the video here once it's ready a little later on.

It sounds very good Cosmin! Great tone, feeling and very tasty. I wouldn't say that this is a "last hour" arrangement. It sounds pro! smile.gif

Thanks Gabi! I guess I just felt good onstage that evening smile.gif About the whole thing - as I said, I had three phrasing ideas which I just threw in and modeled as the state of mind and atmosphere dictated - nothing more and no rehearsals smile.gif

You make me think that I also have those days when I feel very good on stage, and everything that I improvise and play makes me feel great and some other days where I feel less inspired and nothing really surprises me, I do the things right, but there is an extra that appears some days and some days not... I think that this is part of being genuine onstage and depends on how you feel that day.

I think you hit a very delicate spot here smile.gif The state of mind of every individual varies in time, from day to day, even from hour to hour, so I guess that we owe it to ourselves to become aware of that and learn how to focus on the right state of mind for great results onstage. I think you can tell a story with just a few notes, if you play them right smile.gif

Yeah, this is another important topic that we could explore here. How to be safe on stage those days when you are not 100% good to make a show. Yesterday I played with Cirse and it wasn't a good day for me, I was very tired, so I suffered a bit the long day that means having a show in the night. We do the sound check very early and then we have to wait until the show's time. However, for any reason, I felt great onstage and I did a very good show... it seems that the adrenaline that appears when it's time to play gave me enough energy to forget about how I felt.
