When i started to play guitar i was interested only on playing solos. But, in time i realized that my main inspiration for playing a good solo came from a good arrangement that was behind my solos even if i played over a backingtrack that was not created by me.
In time after playing a lot of covers, i realized that i can create my own arrangement and not only playing the original song.
Here i give you some examples of my own :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba8WnzI6SYE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_iljsAqZv8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZibagztE0U

After all that's been said, i have a CHALLENGE for you for you smile.gif
I give you a melodic line where you can create your arrangement(some chords), record it and share it with us.
(try to use only a clean tone or acoustic guitar)
The melodic line i give it's a simple one, so that you can have multiple possibilities to express your imagination.

LET'S GET CREATIVE TODAY! biggrin.gif

That version of 'Black Hole Sun' is great! I might steal that arrangement.

I like your idea of the 'melodic challenge'. I'm gonna mess with that a bit as I have most of the day off.

First of all, I listened your covers arrangement and sounds great.

Now about challenge biggrin.gif I made something, but my first idea was to make a funk rhythm, but I'm not good at this. Actually I'm not good to make a rhythm part biggrin.gif
So, I made something but I hope you don't mind that I added a simple bass line, an ambient effect and of course the rhythm part smile.gif It's just a fast demo biggrin.gif

It's a good take, i like that you created a funk feel using some auto wah.
I am waiting for more versions that includes more chord changes, there are a lot of possibilities, but it's very good as a starting groove
Laid-back a little bit at the end of the groove, it's a good start anyway smile.gif

A lot of possibilities over that very nice diatonic melody.

Here's a bunch streamed together.
I looped your melody and just played it in the room with a hand held recorder.
*mix of my harmony part is a little louder than your melody - sorry about that.

Excellent job mate, did you used a telecaster? cause it sounds great.
I love the fact that you made the theme to sound very nostalgic, you made music
Seems like you have the technique and ability to be a great player biggrin.gif

Nice idea Marius! Your reversions are very enjoyable. It would be cool if you do some lessons explaining how your approach is to do this arrangements.

Great job Monica! This sounds like a real song now. You give it a very dark feeling. How did you get it? Did this appear in your mind first or you started jamming and suddenly you found an idea that you liked?

Well done klasaine! You combined many tasty possibilities. It would be cool and useful for other GMCers if you can share the different progressions that you used in your track.

I'm glad you liked that funk feel smile.gif Yes, are manny posibilities for your melodic line. I thought to put more change chords but when I tried this, the feel was a little "jazzy" for my taste. I wanted to cut that jazz feel because the challenge idea was to put some arrangement over your melodic line not how many chords can put over a melodic line. So, I made this how I felt to fits with my style wink.gif

Thank you Gab smile.gif
In first step I decide that I want to increase a funk vibe but this without to touch my guitar. After that, I chose a clean tone and I start to try different patterns for funk style. But in the moment when I start to try this I already heard in my mind how must sound the other instruments and which kind of instruments I must use. This thing happen always and it doesn't matter what instrument I want to do first. All my demos sounds like a real song and all the time when I start to compose something, I must record 20-30 sec the idea for all the instruments and after that I can clear my mind and work separately for each one with all my focus.
This take it's exactly how sound the main demos without any changes. Just I focused to chose a right tone for each instruments and to fits with the tone that Marius used for melodic line wink.gif I like to give a dark feeling, that's why I used an ambient sound on back smile.gif

Thanks Gabriel.

Because it's such a beautifully diatonic melody you can harmonize underneath the top note/melody note many, many different chords. I started with the chords of the major scale (key of C - do) and progressively substituted farther and farther away though all are fairly common to jazz and gospel/soul music. As long as the chord contains a melody note or 'implies' a melody note ... all good. Your ears are the final arbiter.

This is not necessarily the order of the four bar phrases, though the I did start with the first one.
Each line of four measures is one time through the melody. The two 8 bar phrases are just longer harmonic phrases.
You can mix and match most of these.
*That should be an Abmaj7#11 in the second to last line, last chord.

Great version Ken! Well, somehow i was sure you would be tempted to tackle this one biggrin.gif

Marius - I have also re-orchestrated some famous tunes - just vocals and guitars and I have a big list on which I am working at the moment. Here's a live version of Michael Jackson's Billy Jean:

Beeing inspired by Klasaine i tried a version for you, with interesting chords.
You will see that the chords are built over each note of the melodic line, and they are marked with colours.
So you can put any chord, but the ideea is that each chord must contain the note from each bar of the melodic line
hope is usefull biggrin.gif

Very nice! That'll be $75.00 wink.gif (a little bit of Coltrane in the first 3 changes).

If I may(?) ...
Your chords will be easier to decipher and analyze from a harmonic standpoint if you name them like this. *I'm not suggesting any different notes or fingerings - the chords are great! just more harmonically integral names.

Am9 > Abmaj13 > G7/6 (G13) > Bbmaj13 > Cmaj9 > Abmaj13 > E7#9 > Bb7/6 (Bb13) > A7 > Ab7(+5) > Ebmaj6 Dm11 Fmaj7

*It makes it easier to see how all the 'weird' chords can be subs for the diatonic (and secondary dominant) chords in the key of 'C'.
The Ab, Bb and Eb type chords can be seen as coming from (or borrowed from) C minor - modal interchange. The grips (fingerings) are not uncommon (in jazz guitar) and also a lot easier for another chordal player to read/decipher.
