5150, 6505 What Do You Guys Think?

I've never gotten my hands on a 6505, but from what I understand, peavey and EVH parted ways and peavey just changed the name to 6505. Anyone have a preference? May 13 2014, 02:56 AM	GMC:er Posts: 25.297 Joined: 23-December 09 From: Atlanta, Georgia, USA	Those are classic heavy amp choices to be sure Personally, I've always found them to be just a pinch fizzy at very high gain, much like a recto can be and they tend not to sound great at lower volumes or on the clean channel. But this is just my experience. I"ve heard some amazing tones recorded with these amps, but I'm guessing there was serious processing/eq. You could always use REVALVER It's made by peavey and has a great emulation of the high gain peavey amps. Except for the people which play blues, they all want to go back to a Marshall. One of my good friends had an awesome Hughes and Ketner, lit up blue on the inside, he got it because he is an Alex Lifeson fanatic. I know he still likes it, but would prefer his old JCM 900. I use to have a JCM 2000 - which was the absolute loudest amp I am have had. I had to put a power soak on it. It was either turned off or TURNED FREAKING ON!!!! Volume 1 would blow you out of the room just practicing. I will say it had a great recording growl when cranked. Until I learned how to operate my JVM, I was convinced I needed another 2000, or an 800 or 900, now, I could not be happier with this amp personally. The closest thing I like to it, personally is the Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier that my friend got back in like 2000 or so. But, different strokes for different folks. If I could change anything about my amp, I would get the JVM410 Joe Satriani model, it's a little upgraded in the FX loop and better suited for real stomp boxes as opposed to the unit I have which is better suited rack type FX. Also, the JS model replaces the Reverb with a Noise Gate - which I would LOVE. Also, I noticed that before the JVM, I ALWAYS had a love hate relationship with my tube amps. One day they would sound like Heaven, and the next they would sound like trash. I have not run into that in the 6 years I have had this amp though. I thought it sounded great, but the longer he owned it the less he liked it - he is the pickiest person I have ever known when it comes to guitar tone. I loved going to local guitar shops and playing on a 6505, but I must say the 6505+ was one of the top amps that I wanted, ended up getting a mesa for around the same price as one of those so I jumped on that ship. To me I feel with EVH being owned by Fender that it has slightly better cleans plus some really good high-gain. Best of 2 worlds if you ask me!
