Does it happen often that you check out a lesson which looks easy, just to find out it is insanely difficult for you? If so - I bet you are not alone.

When I didn't know how to estimate the difficulty of a certain piece of music, in respect to my skills, I would often tackle stuff that was WAY beyond my level. I can remember when I first discovered tabs - somewhere back in 1998-1999 I think - I went down to my mom's office and downloaded about 200-300 tabs for my favorite songs. Guess what - I WANTED TO LEARN THEM ALL! Guess what again - I barely learned 4-5 riffs or ideas, because I had no clue how to play some stuff and then again the stuff that I somehow understood was WAY beyond me at that time smile.gif

Answer +1 if this happens often to you!

At the same time, I wouldn't pick out anything from Satriani, Vai or Petrucci - although I did play Peruvian Skies in one of my old bands - but that one wasn't that difficult.

Since I've been here - this was the first lesson I beat my chest, covered myself in ashes and tore my hair out with.

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Modern...o-Marco-Sfogli/

It did not look difficult watching Cosmin play it. If I had stuck with it, I would hope I could have it by now, it's been almost a year and a half I think, but the most difficult part were the fast changes to instant bends, being on the baritone strings.

My latest embarrassment was the solo to Over the Mountain - because of this

Good point! Yes, this usually happens to me with GMC lessons. Sometimes things look easy but aren't or at least are trickier than it seems. Now I remember that this happened to me with some Emir lessons, that I said, ok this sounds cool, and seems to be easy, let's learn it quickly, and there was something behind the string changing and fingerings that made it difficult. He tricked me!! laugh.gif

Did this happen to you with any lesson?

Haha! Mate, I'd choose that lovely lady's piece over my solo anytime! laugh.gif
But, to be honest, you could've nailed my solo lesson IF you would've taken the time to practice it thoroughly wink.gif And you know what I am talking about biggrin.gif Am I wrong?

Of course - one of Stephane's lessons - a funky fusion one which I liked and I said 'Hey, let's learn this one and enrich my funky fusion vocabulary!' It took a little bit more than expected biggrin.gif But as time goes by, you get a 6th sense for figuring out how well things are going to roll when learning something and there's one more aspect involved smile.gif If you REALLY like a piece, you will learn it FASTER! Did it happen to you?

Im still working on lessons I started ages ago where they have maybe one run which I underestimated just how fast my fingers would need to move in order to play it. Still working on lessons which have bends that continue to elude me.

The thing we should remember is that everything is composed according to how someone else places their fingers on the fretboard. There will be things that you guys do that I won't feel comfortable with and vice versa. It's not always a question of skill, sometimes it's just people are playing stuff that is totally in their comfort zone because that's their style. smile.gif

Haha, yes absolutely!
I don't know HOW many lessons here I have longed for to learn finding out that its impossible at that point. So It can really look easy and cool but nope, maybe later wink.gif

But I think the same as Ben here - The person that play the piece/lesson/solo is that persons personally style of playing.
Therefore its very difficult to learn a melodic lesson here at GMC for example and to learn it so well that its deserves a 10.
But we can get close wink.gif
I have realized that here, if u learn a lesson, its the licks, lines, bendings, different finger movements, technics u most of all need to learn. The main thing is to use it in ur own style of playing further on in ur guitar future!

I have struggled with Marcus Lavendells Neoclassical Etude #1 for over 2 years now biggrin.gif Maybe some day cool.gif

But you (instructors) help us here a lot to make the impossible possible smile.gif smile.gif

If it sounds good, it IS good! And if you think its good then there is gonna be someone else in the world that thinks its good:)Wise words from former instructor Marcus Lavendell.

This is a GREAT point. Sure it "looks easy" when someone who's been practicing for years and years is throwing down and ripping it with licks that well within their comfort zone of chops/skills. It can look amazingly simple until you try it and your fingers fight you. It's always a good idea to remember that what your not seeing is the years of practice and beating ones head against the wall that it takes to make things look easy smile.gif

As I"m always saying "TRUE SKILL IS EFFORTLESS" or at least appears effortless. But the good news is, skills can be learned, honed and sharpened over time. The real trick to guitar is simply persistence IMHO. Skill and making it look easy will come with time smile.gif

Well said! That's why Steve Vai sounds like himself and everyone else as well smile.gif Some people are more prone to feel natural doing something while others may not smile.gif It's how nature shaped us, so don't fuss about it - just take your time and consider your personal touch as well, after managing to nail all technical aspects.

Excellent comment. This is exactly what's happening and the reason why we don't feel comfortable with some fingering and licks that others find natural.

This could be a great exercise to untangle our brain and head/hands coordination from time to time, although, I am usually a big fan of playing the positions which suit my style and abilities, rather than trying other ones who might not be ok for me. How do you guys like to approach things? You take it as it is or play it your way, aiming for the same sounds?

Usually for me I pick a lesson that spikes interest and are also beyond my current level. I feel good with memorization but playing at full speed is my killer. I'm ok with that because I'm slowly working toward that level of comfort. You could not make the lessons any easier yet the material is dense. Each section I listen, look at the notation and pick attack.

When I first came here I was very lazy about making it sound perfect and now try to duplicate the lesson. That makes a difference.

It always makes a difference wink.gif Your procedure is good and trust me, time will bring speed as well, but until speed arrives, focus on details, clean playing, understanding the concepts and principles behind various techniques and on balance and timing smile.gif You will A LOT to benefit wink.gif

In my case, when I work on GMC lessons, I try to play everything as it's suggested by the instructor at first. Maybe a position that I'm not used can bring something new to my playing. Then I work on variations to make the riffs of my own, if not, I feel that the lesson doesn't add anything into my playing.
