I am 100% a noob when it comes to guitar gear!

Recently, my friend and I have been talking about starting a psychedelic band just for fun (why not eh), he is an experienced bass guitar player and I'm a not-so-experienced guitarist. Now I listen to a lot of psychedelic music, but I have no idea how to replicate any of the sounds I hear in these songs. I suppose I could purchase a sitar, but what sort of stuff would I need to create some really trippy sounds?

This depends what kind of psychedelic music you want to play. You want psychedelic rock, pop, electronic music, etc. Any psychedelic style it comes with some particular effects. If you can post a link with a song with a similar style that you want to play because in this moment I think at some psychedelic electronic music biggrin.gif
To find effect it's not a hard thing. The part that I personally consider not easy it's to make all the instruments to sound good together. Because as an example over an ambient guitar sound not any bass tone will fits very well.

Depends on the sounds - ?

Post some examples of what you're looking to emulate.

Right off the top: Reverb, Delay, Phaser or Flanger, Volume pedal, Wah wah, Tremelo.
You can get a lot of what you'll probably need in a multi-pedal.

Depends on the sounds - ?

I will try to explain you what I meant. How I split those effects for a particular style.

Psychedelic rock:
I will use wah wah, fuzz and probably electro harmonix. Then I will think to have in the band a keyboard with a strong presence and the songs to be with instrumental solos.

Psychedelic pop:
For this style maybe a sound of sitar, fuzz.....and I still think for more biggrin.gif

Psychedelic electronic music:
For this definitely I have so many options: delay, reverb, chorus, phaser, flanger, tremolo.

But this is only the way how I see the things and how I would use these effects for each psychedelic style to fit with my taste. Of course, for any kind of style will be more options but to be able to choose more I must know if my band will be with vocal or just instrumental.
Ken, I hope you will understand how I hear all these in my head smile.gif

I have no idea what you hear in your head wink.gif ... but I like what comes through your hands.

I was asking the question to the original post (chocolatethunda). As I was typing, you posted too.

I'm sure we can help you out smile.gif Like folks are saying, post some links to songs on youtube or what not so we can hear what your talking about. Just for reference, it's always a good idea to post some examples with questions smile.gif

I'm excited to help out with this. Kinda up my alley. But I agree with a few other comments. Give us a video or something to help us get a better idea of what sounds you like.

Hi Monica definitely agree with the use of EHX pedals to create leftfield soundscapes. My favourite is the Riddle envelope filter with Q. that combined with the reverse echo facility on the MemoryMan is simply AWESOME!
