Thought I would spin Cosmin Lupu's post around and see who everyones favorite 'un-technical' guitarist is? wink.gif wink.gif wink.gif

I submit the riff master himself, Keith Richards. There are plenty of Rolling Stones songs I hear and I keep thinking "is this band even on the same page", but there is something so endearing about it enough to make them one of my favorites.

I loved Ace back in the day, and I still love many many many of his ideas - but you asked for sloppy...

I guess since his departure from Kiss I am less of a fan knowing how he was behind the scenes - but, he is one of my first favorite guitarists and he came up with some catchy solos.

This solo actually doesn't sound as bad as the one on Kiss Alive II. He must not have been as drunk.

Oh yea! Ace is the man. What kind of behind the scenes action are you talking about?

I would certainly add my favorite sloppy guitarist - Kurt Cobain:

Mike McCready.
I was trying to learn the solo for Alive recently and heard the guitar only track from the album. It doesnt sound like the most cleanly played solo ever laid down cool.gif
Skip to 3:44 to hear the end solo.

I think it was Mike who played the solo in Alive, might have been stone though. Either way they are both two of my favourite players.

I would bet that the solo below, whomever played it, is completely improvised. That's not a 'part' that was worked out. What strikes me about it is how good his time is and how confident is his execution. Even w/o hearing the drums and bass from the original track I can tell where the groove is. That's one of the reasons players like that strike such a chord with people. They're playing music in the moment. It's REAL - folks 'get' that.

indeed man - my friend can shit stuff out like that too. Sounds freakin great and he doesn't even know what note he's going to hit next. And he plays everything with confidence even though he's apologetic after throwing something out there. He was here today and slopped out 2 ideas that are worth making a song out of, and I am the type that would take his initial idea and go into my lab and create something to accompany it that I would feel confident about. i wish I had that talent.

Ironically, he tells me every time we talk - pick out some old Ace Frehley.

Coincidentally, I believe the solo from Alive was Kiss inspired.

But both great examples of just pure emotion.

Jimmy Page would have to be my favorite sloppy guitarist when it comes to soloing.

Great examples, especially when we talk about stuff that was made on spot and sounds just right - Kim Thail is another good shot - you all surely know this tune:

As many punk bands or punk guitarists I could name here, I'm also saying Jimmy Page.

On a second thought I'd say Jimy Hendrix.

Hendrix - when we think about lead playing, yeah, but when we think of his uncanny ability of playing those complex rhythmic phrases AND singing - well, in that case he isn't sloppy any more wink.gif

Indeed he is smile.gif I just practiced some double stop based phrases this weekend and I was smiling thinking on how great these are - we kind of owe it to him, don't we?
