I have looked but I'm not sure how to ask he right phrase in Google search.

I want to go look at different Ibanez guitars today or tomorrow. Of course I want one that has a good feel - but as far as the quality tier I don't have a clue.

I would hate to get an overpriced used Ibanez not knowing anything about the model number.

I don't know what RG, Custom, Prestige, Premium, J or any of that means. All I know is I love the Wizard neck on my Ibanez which I purchased new for $700 around 1997 - 2000 I can't remember.

I found this list of Ibanez necks so it looks like anything with the Wizard through Wizard III would be perfect.

http://ibanez.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_neck_types

So this helps, I now realize the neck I'm looking for is 648mm/25.5".

And along with Space Monkey's video I found quite a few vids on the S770PB - and to me, loving the natural finishes, I think this is what I'm looking for.

RG , Premium, Prestige, J Custom is the order I do believe from worst to best as far as money wise.

I bet you could pull down the cheapest S in the store and put it up against even the S770 and it would feel about the same. If it has that neck name then the specs are what you want. It could be from cheap to expensive they will all feel right to your hands. I go from a RG470 ($300) to a RG920 Premium (Around 600-800 used) they all feel about the same to me. The more you pay the different wood you will see, the finish thats used, and possibly even better pickups. Which I'm not fond of any new Ibanez pickups really. I usually change them out.

Thanks man - this is very helpful and what I hoped. Yea - the neck is what I know I love, hardware is replaceable and for the distortion I use, wood is not much of an issue. Alder, Basswood or Mahogany and I am happy.

fwiw, I played a japanese used prestige against the priemium S series, and it was the neck on the premium that sold me. The prestige was a bit cheaper but the premium really blew me away.
I cant say I noticed any difference in the quality as both looked and felt stunning. I actually preferred the finish on the prestige because it was a lovely flame top but the feel of the premium was too much to resist smile.gif

Ouch:

So i played an Ibanez "s" series today - and i loved the neck, did not plug it in or course. I would have got it but I didn't like the color, or know the year.

So, I got my hopes set on this 770 like SpaceM has - watched the video of the tremolo fail and having second thoughts - although I would never do what that dude did to a tremolo.

And from the reviews online it looks like I would be happy with only switching out the bridge pup - the middle on is wasted space and the bridge sounds fine to me.

Sooooooooooo.

I don't need another guitar!!!!!!

S series came out as an alternative to LP's. LP's were very heavy and weren't "hollowed" back in the day so ibanez offered an alternative that specially solved weight problems. Being mahogany body help keeping a similar tone.

But it shined most in fusion, as neck and body shape was comfortable and tones that didn't want extreme gain. Frank gambale had a signature S body guitar.

So today its a bit more versatile than an RG guitar, besides body shape difference as far as I noticed the neck is tiny bit more beefy on S series body shape guitars. But generalizing isn't something easy as for example Herman Li has an S body shaped signature and shreds so I'm guessing that guitars neck shape is thinner...

Thanks for the info guys - these Ibi's are MYSTERIOUS!!! I almost purchased one today but didn't like the color, I knew it was an impulse buy (which is the only way I know how to buy anything), then came home and looked online for the S series and have 2 in my cart to consider - but not today.

I want to go test drive the Suhrs tomorrow, even still, I am thinking the perfect Ibanez for me is out there; so I think my mind is made up to wait for it to fall into my hands.

I would like you Ibby people's thoughts on these...

http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/S770PBNTF/

The first one, if ordered, does not have a tremolo, so I would have to seek one out that does, also it has a Wizard neck, but evidently a mm thicker than the Wizard i have felt.

Regardless - the hunt is enjoyable.

Comparing prices, Shur to mid. priced ibanez S isn't really fair biggrin.gif

Why not demo Prestige S series if they're in price range? I know everybody tends to like affordable choices but trem., steel frets, better top and body woods...they do tend to be better smile.gif

Haven't played an S for a while but iron label series as far as I know are like mod.ed ibbys.

PS; I'm an RG guy but I loved the 7 string S series smile.gif

Those are both fine ibby guitars smile.gif But I have to say (Shocking to hear me as the voice of restraing when buying Ibanez) Spending that kind of money on a new Ibanez may not be your best bet. If it's your first Ibby in a while, you may be wads better off buying two ibby guitars for the same money, just buying them used so you can live with them for a while to see which you like.

For example, most any RG series with a locking trem will give you the general idea on the RG series. Most will require a bridge pickup swap, but that's not a huge deal. You can get really good prices on them as well. For example, the Flamed maple top, mahogany body, locking trem, neck through body RGT42FM I recently picked up go for about $300 used. Which is a great price for those specs!

Most any S series with will give you the idea on those. You can get one about half price if you buy used. Also, if you are thinking of a 7 string, now is your chance smile.gif

I'd hate for you to sped nearly a grand on a guitar that you don't end up digging.

Todd

Thanks for that info Todd - i was hoping you would chime in on this. So the RG series (used) would give me the basics about an Ibanez that I want, (Wizard Neck and tremolo) and I can upgrade the pups to essentially make it a higher level Ibanez but more specified to my particular tastes?

Yup wink.gif Probably a Wizard II or Wizard III which are all fine necks and with a millimeter of the original WIZARD I and without the risk of "Catastrophic Warpage". I"d say be patient and start visiting every music store within driving range and every pawn shop. Play every Ibanez they have in stock. Don't buy the same day you play if possible.

Go home and if you miss that one guitar the next day, go back and get it smile.gif If you think "meh" the next day, skip it. Works as a general rule smile.gif

Check the back of the headstock. Any RG that says MADE IN JAPAN is a good bet smile.gif If it says MADE IN KOREA it's still a pretty good bet. If it says MADE IN INDONESIA then just make sure it plays and feels good. The Indonesian models are a bit below the other two in very general terms but there are still wads of spiff axes being made in indonesia. So trust your ears and your hands smile.gif Shoot for spending about 300-400 I'd say. That way you can buy a couple different types to see what you like and add two ibbys to your collection instead of 1 smile.gif

P.S. I'm talking about USED instruments here. Not new. Buying new instruments can be like buying a new car. It loses wads of value the minute you leave the store/lot with it. I've bought new guitars before, but typically only when they are on clearance/markdown at guitar center or are units that were on layaway and never got picked up etc. New units typically need $100 worth of work to play well (intonation/fret leveling/etc.) A good used axe will be ready to go as is smile.gif

No luck yesterday. I went to the largest pawn shop in the are as well as Guitar Center. The pawn shop had no Ibanez guitars and Guitar Center has some very very cheap series - like $120 brand new.

They did have a used one for over $1,000, which was colbolt blue with bright green knobs and pickups - not my style, so I didn't even pick it up.

I own an Ibanez SV 5470, which is basically a S with a different trem and locking tuner instead of locking nut.
The slim S shape feel like if the guitar is closer to your body, which is really comfortable. As much as i love this guitar, it feels sometimes slightly more unstable on you leg compared to RG's or any other “non-slim” body shapes. Just a tiny thing, but worth to keep an eye on when you check them out in the store smile.gif

Thanks man - good stuff to consider.

I honestly think I am about to pull the trigger on this prestige - the only thing I wish it had was some decorative binding. It comes with a hardshell case and there is a 30 day return policy on it.
