Broken Toggle Switch Unit

Hi

The other day I was playing my PRS SE Zack Myers sig and changing the toggle switch casually then it went all loose. I unscrewed the small backplate and looked into the cavity and the two legs of the unit that was connected onto the actual toggle switch had snapped off. I never change the toggle switch with much force so I am quite surprised that it had snapped.

I am not sure if the unit is fairly standard unit used in guitars but it certainly looked like cheap crap.Especially after paying £625 for the guitar.

Anyone any tips in what to buy to replace it. I don't really fancy taking it to my local guitar shop. It tends to take them 3 to 4 days to do anything to a guitar so I would rather do it myself.I know how to solder as I have soldered many circuit boards at work and thats where I will fixing it

Cheers Sean smile.gif

I found this in the PRS parts store. This matches up to the SE models. It seems strange that it would break like that. dry.gif Perhaps the switch was damaged to begin with.

I agree with DG, sounds like it was damaged before. The one on his link should be a direct replacement. The single tab should be your ground, of the three on the opposite side the 2 outside ones will be for your Bridge and Neck 'Hot' wires and the centre will be a joint 'Hot' for both pickups together.just unsolder the existing wires one at a time and immediately re-solder to the new switch exactly as you take them off and you'll be fine.

Yeah it could possibly of being damaged to begin with mate. At first I thought the toggle switch broke because it was made cheap and wasn't to sure about buying a PRS replacement incase it happened again.A might try and see if I can source a PRS replacement switch in the UK.Seems a little expensive for what it is

Hey mate, too bad it happened - I never had trouble with my SE switches in almost 5 years of heavy usage, but hey, who knows what happens with each guitar? smile.gif My first thought would be to take it to the local guitar shop to fix it, as I am nothing near a diy repair dude or something and I actually dislike tinkering with stuff smile.gif I like playing biggrin.gif But the guys have already given you some hints, if you want to do it yourself. Sensible Jones is the MAN when it comes down to stuff like this!

Yeah maybe it was just bad luck. I never had any problem with my previous PRS SE. The problem with my local guitar shop is that they overcharge for the work they do and I don't feel that they do a great job. I am just going to order the part and do it myself. Looks pretty straight forward smile.gif

Alright man! I totally understand - in here we have a few guys doing this sort of a job and 2 of them are VERY good and they charge normally. Tho one of them is a complete nutcase and I have an acoustic guitar I can't seem to get back from him since 2012 laugh.gif

Kidding aside, I think you can also ask for pro PRS help on their forum as well -> http://prsguitars.com/forum/forum.php Since you are a customer, you should receive all the support you need.

If you explain in detail and maybe show a bill of sale, I bet PRS will send you a free toggle switch.

That can be a possibility as well, as Ken said. Why not write an email to them and explain the situation - I'm sure they'll get back to you with a solution wink.gif

I went to the PRS website and found that I should go to your dealer that I bought the guitar from and it should be fixed under warranty. I bought the guitar on June 6th and never returned the warranty card within the first 30 days (stupid me lesson learned)
I am going to phone the shop I bought it from tonight and explain the situation and see what they have to say.Failing that I will contact PRS directly smile.gif

I am sure they'll help - I mean, it's not like you are asking them to replace the guitar wink.gif And if they are smart, they will win a long term client smile.gif Let us know how it goes - I for one am curious about the politics and client approach in your part of the world.

I contacted the dealer I got the guitar from and they are happy to send me a replacement toggle switch free of charge. They need to get one direct from PRS and they will send it out 1st class( fastest delivery option) then I just need to fit the part. A happy outcome for me. I though that it could end up being a bit of a hassle but I was wrong smile.gif
