I don't know if anyone else gets this. Well its the first time for me. But the middle joint on my middle finger of my fretting hand is a little uncomfortable. not painful just I think I jard it yesterday. That on top of practicing alot of bends and vibratos.

Anyway I know its best to give it a rest for a little while so going to bend and vibrato with my 3rd finger tonight (good practice at least)

Does anyone have any tips and tricks to help this kinda stuff get better quicker?

I've had that before... pain in your knuckle joint sounds insignificant but it actually really gets to you and wears you down !!

In my case finger joint pain has usually been caused by something else, not guitar, but either way there's nothing you can do apart from leaving it alone until it's gone. dry.gif

I know it sound to simple but aside form other pain reasons (other than practice fault) I just keep my fingers always a bit below the edge of abuse. I try to rich the edge and then continue practice with less tension. And keep doing this all over. This helps mne to get my fingers stretched and warmed up without hurting myself. It's same with picking. We try to control the moments of too much tension or strength used to play a lick/excercise.

Keep thinking hey I might just have a night off from playing but all my guitars keep staring at me asking me to play them. Its like a horrible nightmare.

Its like the story of a man being left with his books but his glasses are broken.
This is how I picture hell

Yes, this is something that I also experimented. I would take a day of rest and start slower the following day and see what happens. As the guys said, this is not something risky but it's always better to avoid pain when we practice.

Another important thing is to do some warming up and massages always before you start a guitar practice, are you doing it?

Tom Quayle said in a video that he took a few months and played hyper slow. He took much focus on the little things.

I know you got to play... Maybe write a song with a very slow tempo, like 50bpm but make each segment unique with accents or notes you'd like to play.

Don't know if it would help but I lay each finger on the edge of my desk and pull the hanging fingers to loosen them. If that doesn't work use WD-40 liquid wrench

I don't think it was my playing that hurt it. I noticed yesterday arvo it was a lil sore so I think must of knocked it during work.

Tho I think I might focus on doing a lil warm up before my warm up chords (since those do have some big stretches)

Hey mate, indeed, do take a bit of time to rest. Sometimes, I feel a bit of pain due to weight lifting, but whenever that happens I work out with less weight and it goes away.

I think it would be a good idea if you would alternate your practice sessions - one day focusing on technique and the other on composition, orchestration, rhythm and so on. I think your body will thank you if you don't put it to hard work all the time - practicing is still practicing nonetheless, be it fast picking or learning how to build progressions.

I think it's a healthy way of doing things in respect to practicing and playing the guitar and it should also broaden your musical horizons in a structured way.

If you practice the same thing every day you are very likely to get burned out - so variation can be the key to a pleasant experience. Of course, by variation, I don't mean starting 10 things and never finishing them, so choose a few things you want to work on and make an organized schedule, by assigning each to a certain day smile.gif Let me know how it feels, mate!

Try avoid playing to the point of PAIN. Tension is to be expected but if you feel pain. STOP PLAYING. Seriously.

You can end up seriously injuring your hand/arm in a variety of ways just from over practicing. Something called "Carpal Tunnel Syndrome" can creep up and wreck your arms for half a year or more. It happened to me sad.gif

Always try to do your hand/finger/arm stretches before playing and do some cool down stretches afterward. Just as you would do before an intense workout.

Also, if you post a vid of your technique and show us where the problem is happening I'm sure we can help work it out smile.gif

Todd

Hey man smile.gif Todd's right about warming up and cooling down - I'd recommend this nice exercise for getting your hands ready to practice:

In the mean time, a video of your playing could indeed help us help you even more smile.gif Would you be up for sharing one with us?

Hey mate smile.gif Have you tried it before playing? How does it feel? Have you managed to execute the massage yourself or have you asked a friend? I have managed to learn how to do it myself, as I can't really ask someone to assist before every practice session.

I try and do it to myself. I start with this. then some slowly up to some fast playing then some big stretches.

I kinda think its a good order. I consider the speed and stretch part practice tho but its kinda a warm up as well

I'd mix the massage routine with the stretches and then the slow to fast playing wink.gif Playing also involves stretches in many situations and that's why you could bring in those first, in a static situation, so that your body will be ready for them in dynamic context.

There's always this one which you should think about incorporating in your 'before playing' ritual:
