Ok so its more of one of those things that just happens not something to aim for.

In saying that i've never really had a huge pick angle. probably around 30 degrees instead of the normal 45 that people say you should have. dunno I've tried adjusting it to more 45 but it just feels unnatural and messes with my palm mutes.

It's more the angle of the hand rather than the pick that leads to these 'rest strokes' as I call them. I borrowed the term from classical fingerstyle, where the finger(nail) plucks the string and rests on the string above it. For example, playing the B string and resting on the underside of the G. However, that is with an upstroke, but they are called rest strokes.

It's kind of like that except it happens with a down stroke. Gypsy Jazz players do it as well because of their wide hand angle.

The hand angle I talk about in this video is the kind of thing that promotes that 'rest stroke'

Hey mate smile.gif I think it's a matter of choice in respect to the desired effect. Whenever I explain picking to people, I am trying to explain the effect of altering the picking angle and let them make their own choice in respect to what they want to achieve. It's a more personal way of helping people, I think - so think of what you wish to achieve with your picking and alter the angle correspondingly smile.gif Plus, watch Ben's video above - it's uber useful!

That's a very spiff vid on picking!!! Nicely done BEN! Hmm. I wonder if we might start a new section in the "SERIES" section of the GUITAR LESSONS area about "Speed Picking" and go in to the various aspect of picking briskly? The series section has some great stuff but I don't see a picking briskly series?

I really enjoy the Cracking The Code videos. Don't get me wrong, Troy is a great guy and he has always answered my questions, but I think he is over thinking some of the picking patterns. I recall Troy saying something that he made this series because these players never talk about how they actually pick because it's so natural to them.

To be honest with you, I really don't think that that way you hold the pick makes a lot of difference. I've spent some time studying how different players how their picks and they are all different and some of them are very fast. Look at how Steve Morse holds his pick, he also plays with quite a lot of the tip showing and he has no problems with speed.

Shawn Lane is another player who had a strange picking technique. He held the pick with the pad of his thumb and pad of his index finger and played with it sideways, the pick slicing through the strings. Chris Poland, another fast player, holds his pick sideways and uses his thumb, index and ring finger to hold the pick. He uses the same slicing technique as Shawn Lane. George Benson uses this same slicing technique. I think Jimmy Herring uses a similar technique but I haven't been able to get a good close up view.

With all of this in mind, there is only so far that you can go with changing your picking technique IMO. As Ben says in his video it's the angle of the hand. Guthrie Govan also says something along the lines of making sure you have your wrist in line with your forearm and elbow. Some people say lock the thumb and other guys move the thumb when playing (Joe Stump, Yngwie.).

At the end of the day it just comes down to practicing with the metronome. Unless you have an unusually bad technique then, as long as you just keep on plodding away at alternate picking lines, you will get there in the end. Personally, I think being too analytical is bad. Just go with what feels natural.

I have an Yngwie Play Loud guitar instructional VHS (volume 2 I think) and he says that he never thought about his picking....

Very astute points here.. all of that post is very true.

Regarding the metronome, I think there's something that people can often miss. They view the metronome as something that improves technique but I view it as something that improves stamina and timing.

The technique is something that needs to be determined first.. you need to learn something and play with a while, learn the best way to attack it. Then you've got to make sure the hand synchronisation is there. This is all before you even go near a metronome.

A lot of people learn a pattern and go straight for the metronome, not having spent time making sure they're using the most natural motions for them.

So true!

Another point I forgot to post was that Troy says that when Yngwie is picking a 3 note per string lick he gets it up to speed by picking the first note, picking the second note, then pulling off on the third note. I was actually playing through your Doug Aldrich lesson, Ben, and noticed you play this nifty line:

Attached Image

3 note per strings and not a pull off in sight. ohmy.gif My point again is that it doesn't really matter how you do it. If you practice enough you will get there in the end.
