It's all, but really, it's all about the relationship between notes and the chords over which they are being played.
Theory will help you understand this, but practicing and EXPLORING possibilities, are the ways in which you gather experience and develop a steady vocabulary as a player!
By all means continue with this
There are two possible approaches here:
- key centered playing - you have a modal progression - one derived from harmonizing a certain mode and you just play various good sounding melodies you hear in your head over the progression using the notes on, without taking into account the chord changes too much.
- playing by being aware of the chord changes - this one is most fruitful when you have chords that last for a few bars and if the tempo is slower, heh, you have enough time to deploy various weapons such as specific modes or arpeggios or scale sequences, resolving or using a certain set of notes which have a certain effect over THAT specific chord
Hell, you can even play more modes on the same chord
