My most favorite piece of gear these days is probably the humblest of devices.
A direct box! Radial JDX ... http://www.radialeng.com/jdx.php Especially great when playing outside (ever heard the wind brush up against an sm57) and/or you're sharing the stage with other acts (mics and stands get kicked). Probably the cheapy behringer active Di rack unit that I use. It's handy for boosting signals and groundlifting. When I run in to my eleven rack, the ground lift really cuts down on noise. I hear what you are saying on the stage DI! Just a strong wind can cause problems hitting a mic face. whoooooooosh in the pa is not good. Not to mention when the bass player oops kicks your mic stand during your solo

Not to mention when the bass player oops kicks your mic stand during your solo Exactly! *The particularly cool thing about this DI is that it not only takes the signal from the pre and power amps but it also compensates for the varying impedance of the speaker under load and voltage (reactance). It's EQ'd similar to a Marshall 4x12". And I have to say that it always sounds 'like my amp' coming thru the monitors. It has a ground lift as well as a polarity reversal switch (phase) too. Mine is a 4 way mains socket with surge protection and EMF suppression which is velcro'd in my 4 U rack case, my monitor Axe FX and midi controller all plug into it and I'm buzz free!
