Hmm..

Interesting.. First of all I can't really choose who I'd prefer, it depends on my mood & all that, but if we go by the 'what if I had a gun pointed at me' thing, then I guess I would have to go with.. Joe Satriani.. He was one of the first guitarists that got me into Instrumental Rock music & 'Satch Boogie' was one of the songs that made me want to play the guitar. But at the same time I'm just listening to some Steve Vai.. 'The Crying Machine' & now I could easily say I'd prefer Vai over Satch.. But then I can go & listen to 'If I Could Fly' by Joe, and then I could easily choose him over Steve... Hah

But I'm gonna go with the Satch man, just because that in the long end, he'll probably be a bigger influence on me than Steve Vai.

And just for Ben's sake so he doesn't think I'm ill.. Bacon wink.gif

I love both of these guys but I have to say that I was probably influenced more overall by Satch because of his funky/ groovy/ bluesy style. cool.gif

I'm voting for Satch. I like his song writing a lot more. I also like his guitar tone and his productions more than Vai.

I do like 'em both though!

Satch for me. I like them both but sometimes I find Vai too much of scientist. His masterpiece for me is For The Love Of God but if I want to play anyone some instrumental rock it's always two tracks, Surfin With The Alien and Always With Me, Always With You.
cool.gif

When I got my first guitar which I still have, I bought the Surfin With The Alien tab book at the same time, ooops laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif Well he makes it look so simple cool.gif

I have voted for Satch! biggrin.gif

Both are really cool and inspiring musicians, but somehow Vai music never really got to me. Somehow I've always found Satch songs to be a bit more catchy (should I dare say "commercial" sounding) and also he seems to be a bit more of a groove player which gives some funky vibes that I like. I've seen Satch live and it was an amazing concert. Also, I must say that Vai on stage image and type of performance never clicked with me.

As I was out today, I had a massive desire to get home and listen to some of Vai's Firegarden album.

This will always be my favourite track of Steve's.. just pure perfection. That dual trade off at the end....... wub.gif

This one swayed me smile.gif I'd been thinking about it sine posting and it's nearly an impossible to choose for so many reasons. But if I had only one guy to listen to on a dessert island, it would be VAI smile.gif

Fine pull ben!

Yep, I just can't resist this track. Not just the guitar playing either. The whole arrangement and rhythm section is just.... like a freshly baked custard donut smile.gif

Even though I've probably identified more with Satch's music over the years there's just moments where you need some Vai time. I dunno what it is about Steve but he's like a mood magician, you feel happy when he's around.

I agree with most of the guys. Most of Vai albums are extreme in technical sense but not musical as Satch's. I think Satch is a real success since he is able to play with such technical ability while his songs are catchy and melodic in a irrefutable way. I go for Satch!
