This is to fix intonation problems with open chords (to make them sound less out of tune). Some guitars have this over the entire neck and it will make the guitar sound in tune regardless of where you are playing, this would be very difficult to achieve otherwise.

Yeah, that's Gambale's sig 'Yamaha' AEG-FG. Though he's not a Yamaha endorser currently.

Yes, I saw Matthias Eklundh using guitars with frets like those ones in order to make guitar intonation perfect. He explains it clearly in this video, check it out:

I remember these necks from a previous thread - I would absolutely love to try one out but they are indeed out of my price range tongue.gif
