Hi bucket! Welcome to our thread for Gab's Army.

I will share here your info to have it as reference:

"I've been working on two GMC lessons the past few , Your In Flames lesson, and Darius Wave's Alternate Picking Workout 2 and after spending about three hours on each of them I can play them at the slowest backing track speed with a couple mistakes(I clearly need to spend a lot more time on them before they're in any presentable shape).
days
Lessons of that level are about as simple as I can get in terms of my interests(simpler lessons really bore me) but higher level lessons prove fairly difficult for me. I don't have much theory knowledge. I know most of the open chord shapes but not all of them. The only scale shape I'm very familiar with is the first octave of the major scale, the one with the fingering 2-4/1-2-4/1-3-4(used in the aforementioned alternate picking lesson). I have a very limited amount of time to practice each day because of my job(maybe two hours max, and that's really optimistic) and I would really appreciate some guidance on how to use that time to its fullest.

In terms of my goals, I want to be a very well rounded musician, but my primary long term goal is to be able to perform and write interesting instrumental compositions (things like Dream Theater's "Erotomania" or this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gt8JpGLtpGY). I honestly don't know what my short term goals should be though, and would like some guidance on how to get there.
"

You have a very defined long term goal that will be our target for the future works. We need to work on your technique, as well as some theory to develop your composition skills. DT music is very advanced but there are some basics that you need to learn in order to be able to analyze their music and create your own ideas in that progressive metal style.

The journey is not short but I think that you should be able to compose your first prog metal tunes in around 5 months if you work 2 hours every day on technique and some theory and scales.

I was thinking on a routine like this one for the first week:

Warming up (7 minutes)

http://youtu.be/1XsLRQFV7rY
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Picking-Arpeggios/

Alternate Picking (30 minutes)
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Altern...king-Workout-2/

Rhythm (30 minutes)
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/In-Flames-Style-Lesson/

Scale work (30 minutes)
Module 1

What do you think?

This sounds great to me.
Just one question, for the scale work(module 1) should I try to get through both the week #1 and week #2 lessons this week?

Below the lesson notes you will find a link to watch the Vchat in which I explain the concepts and tasks that you have to do to master them. If you feel that you can work on 2 weeks in one, go for it! The modules are divided in weeks but it off course depends on each guitarist.

Please keep me update during the week.

So just to let you know where I'm at, I just finished my third session of this routine.

Alternate Picking: I can play this fairly clean on the 130 BPM backing track(just a few missed notes). I'll need to use a metronome to work up to the 160 BPM track because there are some parts where I just can't keep up at that speed, specifically at the transitions between parts.

Rhythm: I'm having a lot of trouble specifically with the pre-verse/bridge part, and I was focusing on that today. I can play pretty clean on the 135 backing track now, and the only thing keeping me from being on the faster tracks is that one part, all the other parts of the lesson are not too hard for me to play at speed.

Scale work: I've gotten through learning the shapes and listening to the topics you address in the week one video. I wont be moving on to the week two material though(just to make that clear). I'm going to keep working on the week 1 stuff to make sure I have the shapes memorized, and to try improvising with these things over backing tracks. I can screw around a bit while improvising, but I don't know many phrases/licks, so it gets a little boring doing that.

Hi mate! Thanks for this update! It is really cool to see you working and focused. Lessons always have a parts that give more problems than others and that's where you have to make more emphasis. Isolate the sections that need more work and work on them. Try to discover why the part is giving your problems, think on it, check your hands, your motions and try to find out what you can do to make a more effective use of your technique.

About the scales work, great decision! Feel free to share some recordings of your practice and share it here. wink.gif

Hey, this is just me stopping in to say I haven't dropped off the face of the earth. My computer died several weeks ago and I haven't been able to do any guitar playing, but I'm back on track with a computer that mostly works, I'll update you whenever I actually have something to report. I'll try to record something sometime but My computer i have now is barely capable of playing GMC videos so I'm not sure that will actually work out(that and I don't have an interface).

I will post here again when I am done with the lessons, I've got to kind of re-learn them, so it will probably take me another week. I'll keep you informed.

Hi friend! Welcome back. Thanks for the report. About the recordings, you can share audio files, or you can share videos directly recorded with your cellphone or webcam, without any edition, just upload it to youtube.

Do you think it's possible?

Yeah, I can probably work something out with my phone, I'll just have to figure out how to get the sound quality to be at least presentable. I'll experiment with it. I should be playing the alternate picking lesson well enough in a few days to record it.
