Hi Phil! Much better! The wrong ones are 3, 4 and 6.

Harmonically means two or more notes played together... the opposite of melodically, that means one note after the other. It's not related to harmonic minor scale.

Well, it's a very dissonant interval so maybe that's what distract you. There may be an acoustic reason but I should refresh my old university days... rolleyes.gif

Thanks,

It's funny how I was more sure that # 3 was correct and very unsure about number 6 which I had got right. Very strange laugh.gif

Hello Gab,

I am working on the Darius solo and MUST get back into the Hives rhythm. I can't believe I have been back a week blink.gif. Work has been hectic trying to catch up so I have worked late a few nights so not been able to practice as much as I would have liked. I won't post anything until I have got all of the notes of the solo into my fingers, then, if it's ok with you we can start refining it for the REC zone. I think I have been posting too often in the past and creating videos takes too much of my time so I think it's best to wait until I have the whole of something in my memory first. What are your thoughts on this?

I'm amazed how soft my fingers have become while on my holiday sad.gif

Cheers

Phil

Thanks Gab,
I'm working on bars 29 - 30 but I've had to swap guitars. The Strat was a little uncomfortable getting to the 17th fret on the A string so I've switched to my Ibanez RG1570. It's a bit weird going from 21 frets to 24, it kind of confuses your visual reference points for a while.

When I said I won't post anything until I have a piece fully under my fingers I meant videos, I'll still have questions to ask and things like that. I didn't realise I could come into the chat with questions about my lessons, I always thought I would be disrupting your chat lesson so I never have asked questions in there. I can't get my web cam to work but I guess I can still type.

Thanks for everything mate

Cheers.

Thanks Gab, I thought you concentrated one a specific subject in the chats. I'll get a web cam soon but until then I will have to try and type my question wink.gif

Answers to the ear training.

1: C E G D

2: C A B C

3: C D F A

4: C G C E

5: C B A F

6: C D G E

7: C E A G

8: C A D E

9: C F E D

10: C A F D

This took me 10 minutes, I don't actually recognise the intervals from memory but I was getting close fairly quick. How do you think is the best way to practise with these multiple note pieces? Should we listen to the whole phrase and then try to play it from memory then see how close we are? and if incorrect, listen again, then play until it sounds right to us and then re-check with the piece? I hope this makes sense unsure.gif

Cheers

Hi Phil, the results are perfect! The best for training your ear is to try to recognize them without using your guitar. Listening each one many times, and singing each note to identify the different note distances, and so note names.

I assume that you used your guitar to find the notes, don't you?

If you did it, it's ok, it is also valid, but if you want to go beyond, using only your ear is a great training.

Thanks Gab I will start that. It will be a long road but the best places can be found at the end of a long journey.

I know I am improving my ear though because that would have taken me many more minutes before.

Thanks Gab.

I've got some improvement on the 19th fret bent vibrato so we are still moving forward smile.gif

I played bar 29 over and over for 45 minutes blink.gif I managed to get up to 70% speed but it is very tricky. Also I think I have damaged something in my forearm by doing this for so long as I am getting stabbing pains and tingling along my forearm in line with my little finger huh.gif . Hopefully it will be better tomorrow, if not I am resting it at the weekend as we are having a micro holiday Saturday to Sunday overnight stay so it should be better for Sunday evening. smile.gif

This is bar 29 and I went back to playing it on my Strat after our chat last night, this may be what damaged my arm as the 17th fret on the A string is a stretch on the strat.

Hello Gab,

Ear training only tonight arm is still a bit tender sad.gif (See post above)

Have you heard of The Ruts? A pivotal UK punk band, Henry Rollins frequently refers to their album The Crack as the “best album ever made” and the band make frequent appearances on his radio show Harmony In My Head.

Babylon's burning
You're burning the street
You're burning your houses
With anxiety

Chorus:
With anxiety
Babylon's burning
Babylon's burning
With anxiety
Babylon's burning
Babylon's burning

Babylon's burning
You're burning the street
You're burning the ghetto
With anxiety

Chorus

Babylon's burning, baby
Can't you see?
Babylon's burning
With anxiety

You'll burn as you work
You'll burn as you play
Smoulder till you're smothering
With ignorance and hate

Chorus

Babylon's burning, baby
Can't you see?
Babylon's burning
With anxiety

Babylon's burning
Babylon's burning
Babylon is burning
Babylon's burning
Babylon's burning
Babylon's burning

Lights are burning red and white
Lost on an island in the night
Rescue me or here I'll stay
A traffic island castaway
Lost in a bar,
Inside it's only me who's straight.

Out in the dark and on my own (shine on me)
I'm stranded here with no way home (shine on me)

Glasses smash full of champagne
It trickles down the drain
A treat for sewer rats
you're like a rat when you get high
People falling on the floor
Or running out the door

Lights in the night burning red and white
Shine on me so I can see
Out in the cold out on my own
Shine on me so I can see, shine on me

Out in the dark and on my own
I'm stranded here with no way home ( shine on me)
Lost in the dark, standing here alone (shine on me)
Out in the night, where traffic wardens roam (shine on me)
On an island where you abandoned me (shine on me, shine on me)
Lights are burning
Bright so I can see, (shine on me, shine on me)
Lights in the night, burning red and white (shine on me, shine on me, shine on me)
Shine on me so I can see (Shine on me, shine on me, shine on me)
etc

Enjoy, you'll find loads more on You Tube smile.gif

I'm away now until Sunday evening, hopefully arm will be fully recovered.

Cheers Gab

Hi mate, how is your arm now? That's not a very wide arpeggio so it's weird that you hurt your arm while practicing. This can be related to the fact that you haven't been practicing relaxed, have you? Also, do you remember Petrucci's massages and stretches? It's a good moment to take them back.

Please stop practicing if it still hurts, and keep me updated on how you feel.

About the band, I haven't heard of them, thanks for sharing! I'll check their music.

Thanks Gab,

My arm is ok thanks but too painful to risk playing. I know it's not a wide arpeggio but I was so focused on nailing bar 29 I didn't realise how tense I had become over 45 minutes. I set the loop on bar 29 in GP6 and just went into a trance blink.gif . My teeth were clenched so tight that my jaw muscles were starting to cramp which is what made me stop. It was the little finger on the 17th fret on the A string that has caused the pain. I tried to play it tonight and it was that note that sent pain through my arm. On top of that I did 10 hours manual factory work today. It wasn't hurting while I was playing but when I stopped and relaxed it started to throb.
I was totally zoned out, in a trance trying to nail that bar 29 I didn't notice what was happening to me. rolleyes.gif I think the wrist angle has a part to play too, it's not a natural position to hold for that long. Not for me at my current level anyway.

I think the pain is just muscular and not tendon so it will be fine very soon smile.gif

I'm still pleased that I got the notes into my finger memory, for bars left now then get up to speed then polish for REC.

http://www.theruts.co.uk/?page_id=124

In bar 29 of the Darius solo, I am very confused. There are twelve notes (4 triplets) and each one has an 'E' over it meaning it is an eighth note. How does this work out? Is it an error in the TAB? unsure.gif

Cheers

Phil
