Hi Phil,

I honestly didn't understand how you are using both backing and guitar pro for practicing but if it helps to learn the triads it's ok for me!

Thanks Gab,

If you look HERE there is an MP3 and a GP5 file for each backing track.

I think I'm confused now you've said that rolleyes.gif That simple backing track that I said in my post I would send to people who wanted it, is exported from the GP5 Backing track 1 file.

Hope this makes sense because I still struggle to follow the studio backing, listen for chord changes, think about the triads that I've learned AND come up with something musical smile.gif

That's why I thought I could run both together in my DAW, the GP5 backing to hear easily the chord changes, and the studio backing to give me inspiration to play something musical, but the chord progression doesn't appear to be the same smile.gif

Cheers Gab

Totally clear now Phil! Yes, this is a good way to make things easier to follow. This gives me the idea that two tempos for workout's backing tracks can be a good idea. smile.gif

Thanks Gab,

I agree 100%. I think some of us struggle 1: With the tempo and 2: With drums, bass and rhythm guitar. It's a lot for us to think about, I liken it to the trick of spinning plates. To some of us it can be beyond that, and more like THIS. laugh.gif

I know we need to be able to cope with extra instruments but we need to get comfortable with the chord changes first, then maybe, guitar and bass, or guitar and very simple drums.

It's all about learning to multi task I guess. Like with juggling, you start with two balls, then work up to three, then four, etc etc. I'm not trying to tell you how to teach Gab, I'm just giving you a student's perspective. I hope I don't offend you.

Cheers buddy

Phil

UPDATE:
I've still plugging away at the Petrucci lesson, it's a struggle but I am improving. As soon as I get the whole thing under my fingers at any speed I will post a video for you to look at.

I've tried again tonight to remember the C and F triads, I played the C triads for 20 minutes, sometimes just playing the root © up and down the neck for a couple of minutes then playing the triads ©, once I thought I'd remembered them I move to the F triads and kept on getting them mixed up. I found myself mindlessly playing them all, almost in a trance, fazed out wacko.gif and they still didn't stay in my head. Since I was a kid, I've struggled to learn patterns like this, maybe it's some form of dyslexia unsure.gif

You know that card game where you lie all of the cards face down, then you pick one up, look at it and put it back down, then you do another one, then your opponent does the same. The aim of the game is to remember the cards as much as possible and try to select pairs which are then taken out and the person with the most wins???? Well I am hopeless at it, I only manage to match pairs when there are a few cards left laugh.gif I have never ever won that game, even against my 7 year old nephew rolleyes.gif laugh.gif Maybe this will indicate something to you about my brain and how it works in some areas.

I was talking to our metallurgist today, very very clever man, he said he was bottom in mathematics at school, when he studied to be a metallurgist, he could do equations no matter how complex because they were always related to something else, he could see where the figures were coming from, he could see exactly what they were related to in the real world rather than just an equation on the blackboard. I think my brain must work like that looking at those triads. I'm trying to find a related way to learn them.

I actually think I might remember them better if I learnt them from within a piece of music and then made my own music, rather than learning them parrot fashion and then trying to remember them to create music. I hope this makes sense and please, I'm not asking you to create a piece of music with just those triads in, you are too busy as it is, it is just a possible explanation of my limitation. I hope it makes sense. Maybe I'm looking at it completely wrong, maybe I can't see the forest for the trees smile.gif

Maybe it's a musical version of that dreaded word "percent", you can ask some people what 10% of 1000 is and they haven't got a clue, tell them that every 100 apples has ten red apples in it, how many red apples in a 1000 apples, BANG! they answer straight away. Same with algebra, some people can't do it, but make the x and y, equal to total pints of beer, and empty beer glasses and they'll soon tell you how many pints they've got left to drink (Z) wink.gif

Anyway, I am just going to keep on repeating, repeating, repeating, if that doesn't work then I am up the creek without a paddle ohmy.gif

Cheers Gab and sorry for the long post. It is borne out of frustration rolleyes.gif

Hi Phil,

It's not the idea that this exercise becomes a repetitive nightmare. I think that it's better to let that this becomes more natural. You don't need to learn this in a hurry, you have all your life to get use to this kind of stuff. And trust me, the less you force it, the easier it will become. That's why I recommend trying to make your own improvisations, and create your own phrases over the backing.

Also, I think that maybe working over only 1 chord can be a good idea at this point. Combining two triads can be tricky when you can't play only 1 everywhere. Starting at step 2 when step 1 isn't clear can make things so tricky. This is the reason why I always recommend to divide assignments, lessons, licks in very small blocks and slowly add more parts of it.

Don't dedicate more than 20/30 minutes each day to practice the triads, then practice other stuff or just make music.

Thanks Gab,

I guess I worry that you might start thinking I'm not applying myself enough mellow.gif

I'll create an easy backing from the GP5 file with just the C chord and one with just the F chord and share it as an MP3 for the others. smile.gif

Cheers buddy.

UPDATE:
OK Gab,

Please, if you have time, look at the video, can you see what I am doing wring with the pinkie vibrato? I've tried on about 5 guitars so it is definitely me. At 00:20 I am doing it with just my pinkie, not much control but it does it, then I add one finger, then another etc.

Cheers Gab

Hi Phil, that's not bad! But I notice that it's not natural yet. Have you tried starting the movement up instead down as you are doing it. I mean the vibration. Does it make sense?

Thanks Gab,

Yes it makes sense but I never have gone down on the B string as it seems too close to the edge of the fretboard. I will try tonight though. I was mainly wondering about the note being "choked", for some reason my pinkie struggles to keep pressure on when I add other fingers and the note dies.

Cheers mate smile.gif

However, I think that you start going down. Check any vibrato and note how you start with a down movement.

Thanks Gab,

Yes I do, I was confused, had a bad day, I'll go for the upward movement tonight. For some reason I was thinking of bends. I usually go up with bends. My brain needs a defrag laugh.gif

Out of action sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

Hello Gab,

Sorry, I can't play. I got home tonight, I was walking towards my front door and I fell. I smashed into my front door, somehow punching the letterbox with my left fist (see pic for swollen knuckle), I smashed my right elbow into the side wall to the right, I went down hard on both knees and ended up with my face against the door. Both shoulders, back, neck, and right ankle also hurting. The only thing that is stopping me playing is my left hand. I could play a bit of bottleneck if I knew how but that's about it sad.gif It looks worse in real life than in the picture, it looks like I have no thumb in the picture but it's just tucked away laugh.gif
I have a high pain threshold but this is just too painful to play mate. Sorry.

I'll spend my practise time reading about the CAGED system and other theory.

I'll be back on it ASAP.

Cheers Gab.

Hi Phil, I'm sorry about this! I hope that you get better soon!

You could maybe use this time to read about theory, and watch some videos about improvisation, composition, or maybe watching movies / reading books.

Thanks Gab,

Yeah, I did say under the picture that I am going to use my practise time to study the CAGED system and other elementary theory. I'm also going to experiment with my recording setup, I'll have to just strum the guitar with open strings but at least I can learn about the Scarlett Mix Control and how to get more than one input into my DAW.

The swelling went up about half as much again but over night it went down a lot, the pain is still bad in the knuckle and the bruise is coming through now. The rest of my body feels like I've been beaten with a cricket bat, you know how it is when you have one of those sudden falls, you don't know it's happening until you hit the floor so you can't fall properly, you just instinctively brace yourself (which you shouldn't do really because you fall hard when you brace yourself) and then in a split second.... "SPLAT" on the floor blink.gif

I think in a couple of days the pain will be bearable, so I will get back on the fretboard hopefully by Monday, maybe tomorrow if I get some painkillers down my neck smile.gif

Cheers Gab, I will be on it as soon as I can tolerate the pain smile.gif

Hello Gab,

OK, I had a little practise tonight, it's ok if I grit my teeth or bite on a stick laugh.gif . No big bends available yet, I would go through the roof blink.gif but the Petrucci thing is ok for pain levels. It's not too bad at work all day it's just the position on the hand around the neck that makes it hurt.

I won't give you daily updates, I need to get back to where I was and then I'll do a little video of a 50% speed take once I've got there.

Onwards and upwards, to infinity and beyond smile.gif

Cheers friend.

Thanks Gab,

My hand looks like a zombie hand at the moment, middle, ring and little fingers are bruised badly at the bottom and a funny red colour further up, the back of my hand is starting to go yellow and I even have a bruise coming through on the palm, never had that before.

Anyway, like I said, I'll get on with getting back to where I was and get back to you, hopefully by the weekend the pain will be much lower. At the moment, after half an hour it feels like it has been hit with a sledge hammer blink.gif

Cheers friend

I'LL BE BACK........SOON cool.gif

Hello Gab,

You are probably right but it bugs me not being able to play. I don't think playing is hindering the repair to be honest, it's not like a muscle/tendon/ligament pain. I have a feeling the knuckle bone itself is bruised and that takes weeks to stop hurting anyway. I won't push it too hard. I do tend to repair quite quickly smile.gif

Thanks for your concern friend.

Remember, I am a soldier of Gab's Army, we don't give up cool.gif
