Thanks Gab,

I sent him the video of my Satriani made easy lesson and some other stuff about the guitarists I like. He answered as below. They seem a genuine, honest company.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for letting me know your background. I think I understand your
position now, more or less. I'll soon send you a few special drills
that I think you'll find useful, and a few more tips... And as I said
before, do let me know whenever you have any question or even any
suggestions or requests about new features in the software.

All the best, and talk again soon...

Marco

Don't forget Gab, I am only going to use this as my first 20 minutes to try to get some dexterity in my fingers. I am still working on this Petrucci lesson and again it seems that these scale like runs are my Achilles heel. I need to add some chord work too but not too fast.

Cheers buddy, thanks for everything.

Thanks Gab,

I nearly threw numerous guitars through the window at the weekend. I just can't get my speed up on that run, try try try try try try, no increase. I'm wondering if it is a mental block rather than a physical one.

I'll soldier on mate, it's just extremely frustrating. I can play each string fast enough it's putting it together that makes it fall apart if you know what I mean.

Cheers buddy.

The most difficult part when using Alternate Picking technique is crossing strings. There are basically two possibilities: outside and inside picking. However, the difficulty not only depends on which of this two mechanics is used, it's also related to the quantity of notes that you play on each string. In order to detect you weak points and work on it, there is a lesson in my Intensive technique course that will help you.

LINK HERE.

Please check the exercises, try them and tell me what you feel. About the progress, I'd like to refresh a phrase that you recently received from that guy: "Keep in mind that your brain and your muscles continue learning even when you are not practicing. It's like watering a tree (the practice) and then waiting for the plant to grow (the breaks). So, even if you, for example, spend a lot of time practicing during a weekend, you may feel some progress immediately, but you will also feel that some more progress has taken place several days later, even if you didn't practice further in that time"

So be patient, and be sure that progress is happening but results sometimes are seen later. Keep on working.

Thanks Gab,

Yes I like the tree watering analogy smile.gif I also remember telling you some time ago that I could play a piece better when I came back from holiday than I could before I went smile.gif I think it is also in Kenny Werner's book.

I will stick at it Gab, it's just so frustrating when you have the rest of the piece good enough to post into REC, also it is the same problem that I had with Darius' lesson so I have found my Achilles heel I think.

Cheers buddy. smile.gif

UPDATE:
Firstly, the GP5 files don't open in the link you gave me but I get the idea from the PDFs smile.gif
I analysed my picking tonight, I may have found the problem, or at least a contributing factor. I'm going to post a question in the practise room, I always feel bad doing that because I don't want you to think I don't trust your judgement, I just put it there so that the feed back will help others.

My problem seems to be I'm not actually alternate picking. With three notes per string, I'm doing it wrong. See PDF please.
It's probably an old old habit. There's probably a name for it smile.gif
Attached File  PICKING.pdf ( 20.03K ) Number of downloads: 97

I guess I need to spend a whole lot of time on my alternate picking before going any further with anything.

Cheers smile.gif

Hi Phil,

I've checked the file and I noticed that you are using a different technique called economy picking. It's not wrong but it's different. There is a guitarist called Frank Gambale that plays everything with that technique and he is a killer shredder and fusion player. I think that you get a different sound when using economy compared to alternate picking. It's like "smoother", closer to legato. That's why works great on fusion which usually is full of legato phrases.

Check out this video:

As you can see on his video, he created his own scale shapes and patterns in order to be able to play everything with one way of crossing string. The method helped him to create his own style. It's limited, but very personal and who can say that it's not effective.

However, I'm more that type of guitarist that like to be able to play the same lick in different ways to get different sounds. If you want to sound more like Gilbert, Malmsteen, Bettencourt, you will have to be able to play with alternate picking when crossing strings.

About starting thread with questions, please keep on doing it! smile.gif

Thanks Gab,

I'm going to have to spend some time getting rid of this hard wiring. Regarding my "technique" I don't know if you read all of the comments in the forum post but I said to Scott (Bleez) "I've been likening it to things like darts and golf, when you throw or swing, you follow through, economy picking takes more control with the right hand because you have to slow down the stroke to hit the string on time. It may come natural to some but I think alternate is more metronomic so should be easier to control if I can break the habit.
Imagine throwing a dart and slowing down at the midpoint, or taking a penalty and slowing down at the midpoint. I know we are talking much smaller movements on the guitar so the inertia effect won't be anywhere near as powerful but it will be there.
Maybe, even though I've done it for years, economy picking, as I have now found out it is, it isn't really for me."

So I need to go away and get this sorted out. I've only ever noodled before joining GMC but I must have always done this, so it will be extremely hard wired sad.gif

If it's ok with you, I'm going to work on this lesson for a while https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Altern...king-Workout-4/ as well as practising the Petrucci lesson with correct picking.

I can't believe I was doing this still while thinking that I was alternate picking.

Cheers buddy, see you soon smile.gif

Phil

Well, that's a good desicion. I strongly recommend to work on the lesson from my technique course combined with that lesson and these two other ones:

LESSON #5 – RIGHT HAND III /ALTERNATE PICKING (Crossing strings)

LESSON #6 – RIGHT HAND IV /ALTERNATE PICKING (Crossing strings)

You'll need to create a diary routine and dedicate at least 30/40 minutes to this.

I've seen that Govan's video, he is the man!

Cheers Gab,
Tenby is a lovely place smile.gif

Ok, here is a full speed recording of the Petrucci lesson. It's pretty bad, I'm still not up to speed in the run in question and there are mistakes in other areas that have appeared with the REC button rolleyes.gif I had to put something up for you Gab, I was forgetting how to use Reaper properly laugh.gif

I have to admit, I haven't been doing alternate picking practise as such, I have just been practising this piece which I know I shouldn't but I'm like a dog with a bone at the moment.

He's not saying anything new here, but by saying "until the hands are talking to each other" adds a new spin on the thought process.

Hi Phil,

yeah, you need some really intensive alternate picking workout. I'd like to see a video of you playing that first lick giving trouble in the lesson as a loop with metronome at a tempo that you can play it clean. Is it possible?

Thanks Gab,

OK, I've done this quickly just using the camera built in mic. I hope this is enough for you. I can hear that the timing is out particularly on the last note (1st beat of next bar) but hopefully this will come in time.
Thanks for your help mate wink.gif

Cheers

UPDATE:

Tonight I sat for an hour just playing that lick and the A note before it to get the transition into the lick too. I was in a trance but managed to get up to 101bpm. In Guitar Speed Trainer there is a metronome that you set with a slider to the exact tempo you want and it plays the selected piece over and over. Similar to GP6 but GP6 doesn't have small adjustments.

I remember when I was weight training, sometimes you could be stuck on a certain weight for months, then suddenly, for some reason, you broke it and the crazy thing is, over the next month you could add another 10kg in small increments. I think much of it is a mental block, it's hard not to keep saying "I'll never break this" and that confirms to your subconscious that you won't do it, so, you don't. I think I will do teh same tomorrow, if I can get 5 more BPM I will have the mental block starting to break smile.gif

Cheers buddy.

Hi Phil,

great to find your video here! I think that there are some little details to adjust in your right hand movement. From what I can see in the video you are doing some kind of fingers movement, as well as some kind of circular motion. The camera angle is not reflecting it clearly but that's what I suspect.

Alternate picking is a movement that should start from your wrist, there is no finger movement involved on this technique. This details, and the extra "circular" movement that you are doing, added to the fact that I think that your movement can be smaller are the main reasons of your speed limit.

Please check carefully the original lesson or any Darius or Ben's alternate picking lesson and analyse their right hand movement.

Thanks Gab,

I tried to do it with my wrist and rigid fingers, I couldn't get anywhere near as fast but that's just because it's new.

I am going to work hard on this lesson https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Altern...ing-Workout-4/#
This is the easiest of Darius' alternate picking lessons even though it's #4 smile.gif

I am not here much at the weekend as my wife and I are going HERE for the day on Saturday and spending the night at a hotel nearby for a nice meal and wine, then a nice drive through the countryside to find lunch on Sunday but please trust me when I say i will be trying very very hard to crack this. I have a blister forming on my pinkie on my left hand, it has never hit the fretboard so much with that Petrucci lick hour after hour. Hopefully the Darius lesson will give it a break smile.gif

Cheers buddy. smile.gif

Hi Phil,

yeah, it will take some time to get used to the new motion but it's essential for your future as a guitarist if you plan to play fast licks like that one. Darius lesson is easy and I think that you will be able to play it soon, it can be a good choice to get used to this new movement. However, you'll need to work on more "speed" exercises (like the ones that I've shared from my ITC) if you want to push your speed limits.

Thanks Gab,

I did look at the ones in your ITC but the GP5 links didn't work, when I clicked on them they just threw up a page of hearts and squares unsure.gif

I've just looked again though and they now seem ok. Bloody computers smile.gif

I'll get onto tonight Gab

Gab,

I wasn't wrong about the hearts and stuff, if I click on your link https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...t=0#entry576899 and then click the GP5 link I get the page in the image below. When I said they look ok now, I was at work and clicking on different links in your ITC so I was mistaken. What is odd, is that Chrome normally just downloads any GP5 links.

Cheers buddy.

Update:

This only happens in Chrome, I've always used Chrome and never had this before. If I use Firefox or Edge it works fine. I'll let Kris know.

Cheers

Update.
I did Lesson 5 exercise 1 tonight. I managed to get up to 70% speed but it was scruffy at that speed so back to 60% for a 15 minutes then back to 70%. Then I am away for the weekend but will be practising on Sunday evening.

Cheers buddy
