Hi Phil! Nice to find new videos!!

I notice that you are not relaxed while playing. You need to record videos for me more frequently! biggrin.gif

I'm sure that you can play this better than that, but let me say that this is not bad at all! I see that you are not comfortable adding vibrato to chords yet. Remember that vibrato should always start from your left hand wrist, so my recommendation is: Practice the movement trying to make it slower than that (than video), but wider. The idea is that you get used to the movement and that you can keep it constant and regular before you try it faster.

Something like this: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Vibrato-Odyssey-5/

but with chords. One idea that comes to mind is that you start with double stops, then with triads/tiple stops, and finally with full chords.

What do you think?

Thanks Gab,

I'll work on the vibrato, what I find hard is making four fingers move in harmony with each other so your suggestion building from double stops sounds spot on.

I'll record another video tonight in totally free time so you can see which bits really need the work, I'll probably be more relaxed.

Apart from the chords, some of the timing seems weird, mainly at the part near the end where the 7 chord is played at the 14th fret and slides down in steps to the 12th, it catches me out as there is a longer gap before playing the single more on the 12th fret, it feels weird.

Cheers

Phil

Hello Gab,

As I said in the post above, here is a completely free time video, it's still a bit off what I can do without the REC button but it's there for you, there are a couple of split-second pauses where I had brain fade but it is what it is. I have to say, I can't believe this is a level 3 lesson, it might as well be a 10 for the struggle I'm having laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

I find it incredible how Lale manages to fit the vibrato in sometimes, there doesn't seem enough time to even get started with the vibrato biggrin.gif

Hello Gab,

Further to the two posts above, I've done another video tonight. I played along with Lale, I'm not au fait with the piece enough yet to play it solo. This was done at 70 bpm and I know it still needs a lot of work and the tone needs more life and vibrancy, some of it could be down to being too tense. Also, the low E buzzed quite a bit near the start but I did give it a bit of a clout, (I love that word laugh.gif )

Your thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

https://youtu.be/CDRuV7BW3Hw

P.S
This is a great idea for a backing track. I think in time it will help to train the mind and ears to follow the chords. Might be good if GMC could have an Improving Backing Track Library with this kind of thing in it. What do you think?

Hi Phil!

Great stuff here!! I've watched both videos and I have to say that I've noted important progress in the second one. The overall feel is much better, and it seems that your vibrato practice is definitely on the right track.

There is obviously more rock to do, but I see that you have a bit more control and strength when adding vibrato to those chords. Even comparing this new vid with the previous one you'll notice the big difference.

Next goal is to make it more consistent and regular.

Thanks Gab,

Just needs more time on the fretboard wink.gif

What did you think of the backing track idea as a training aid? I know you're super busy with Kris at the moment but maybe one day a library of backing tracks in that format might help many people learn to follow the chords.

Cheers

Wow, I've never seen that, a bit too advanced for me, and I wouldn't know how to even start soloing over the Vai Whitesnake era one because there is a lot of single-note stuff in it already, but I do like the concept for more advanced players.

I think the one that I sent you is probably better for my level but I've also thought that it could be good to learn the CAGED concept. Some people like visual, practical exercise, rather than learning the shapes and applying them on their own, especially if they struggle to follow the chords.

There could be a hybrid of these two video formats for CAGED. So over the chords, there could be the notes available in a similar part of the neck rather than going up and down the neck. I struggled with CAGED when I tried it, it's something for the future but I'm sure it can make the improvisation, (which is hard enough in itself) smoother and more seamless between transitions of chords.

I hope that makes sense and makes it to Kris's ideas bucket wink.gif

Cheers

It makes sense and it's a good idea! Thanks mate!

Regarding following the chords, and caged system, it's an amazing tool for improvising, but before we follow the chords, we need to be comfortable using one scale over all of them, or maybe 2, as we tried when improvising over blues with major and minor pentatonics.

Update, or more like a downdate.

Been back at work just over a week, I've been snowed under with paperwork for risk assessments regarding Covid-19, sorting out new working practices, sourcing PPE etc, all of this has had to be done in my own time as I need to do what I need to do at my workplace. Not had any time or energy to practise buddy, but things are settling down now.

Cheers

Thanks Gab,

Okay, we've been back for two weeks now, things have settled down, people are getting used to the new way of working safely and customers are being very very good, one customer even offered to pay for everything he has on order before we even start to make it because he wanted to help us out, over £50k, very very nice of him, we couldn't accept his generosity but we are prioritising his work.

Anyway, would it be okay for me to start on your Eric Gayles lesson? I know I haven't mastered the SRV lesson but I feel that it is a long way off to get it to a REC take, I am STILL not comfortable with the chords and some of the timing. I will still keep on practising it for the first part of my session though, to polish it daily but I feel I need something fresh and the Eric Gayles lesson might just be what I need.

Cheers buddy.

Hi Phil! Nice to hear this! It seems that we need to adapt to this new way of everything.

I think that going to Eric Gales lesson is a good idea! You already play the first licks, and very well. smile.gif

Thanks Gab,

Just an update, here we go again rolleyes.gif I've been having a lot of trouble with a trapped nerve in my neck causing a lot of issues with my left arm, I can't lift it above my shoulder, it doesn't hurt it just won't go any higher, also grip strength is very low, the whole arm feels slightly numb, vibrato is very hard to do, not because of pain, my arm just won't respond. Can't get to a physio unless I go to A&E and I'm not venturing into a hospital at the moment, I'll wait until the private physio opens locally. It makes playing guitar tricky. I've been doing my own manipulation, it crops up once in a while so I can do what the physio told me when I first went with it. It's a very strange feeling, a bit like when you have an injection for a filling in your tooth and it is starting to wear off or when you've had a gruelling squat session and your legs feel like jelly.

I'll keep you update. I'm still working on my lessons it's just that position with the wrist rotated to the fretboard doesn't have much strength. You probably remember me having similar issues before.

Speak soon buddy.

Stay safe.

UPDATE:
Tonight I managed to get to 90% speed playing along with the instructor for the SRV lesson. Not perfect but quite relaxed. Vibrato was hard due to my nerve problem but that is improving by doing my set of exercises 10 times a day, when I turn my neck it sounds like twisting a stick of celery in my head laugh.gif I'm quite pleased withmyself though, I never thought I even manage 50% speed, I think self doubt can really hold you back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers

Thanks Gab,

It will get better, it's having phases at the moment, sometimes good sometimes bad, sometimes it's hard to slide towards the headstock, I have to sort of throw my elbow towards the headstock to get my hand to move. Sometimes my fingers twitch of their own accord. It is a cervical radiculopathy which is a medical way of saying "pinched nerve". Mine is usually caused by a bursitis which is a swollen bursa (fluid sack) within a neck vertebra which causes a bulge and impingement on a nerve. I get it every so often, it all comes from my crazy days in the gym pushing too hard and heavy.

I'll still be trying to get the SRV lesson better buddy.

Cheers

Phil

Hello Gab,

Is getting a little better, I've tried the SRV Chordal practise every day but chords have been very difficult especially sliding them, I can't keep the pressure to hold the shape of the chord when I try to slide. I've been working on some Bootcamp stuff and improvising. It's okay for me to do single note stuff, it's chords that are the issue.

I'm very apprehensive going to a chiropractor /osteopath /physiotherapist at the moment even though they have to follow all the Coronavirus rules, so I'll just have to stick it out. I'm hoping there will be a big crack and pop when I move my head one time and everything goes back into place.

Stay safe buddy.

Phil

Hello Gab,

I've had this issue for about 25 years, I get it mild a few times a year, every couple of years or so I get it bad and about every five years I get it really bad where the spasms cause so much pain I break out in a sweat and nearly pass out. This has been different with the numb feeling in my arm and lack of grip strength this time.

I've been doing some very light, very controlled excuse to strengthen all muscles in the shoulder girdle for about ten days now and it has helped a lot. I guess toning the muscles is acting like a built in neck support

I did speak with a local chiropractor via Facebook messenger, he said:
"To be honest that's a lot of neurological signs you've just explained to me (arm pain, twitching and loss of grip strength), so it may be that this time you have hurt the actual disc in your neck. So yes you are right, you should not have a damaged cervical disc manipulated, and the exercises won't do anything. Have you ever had a cervical mri? I would be happy to examine you without one and give my opinion about treatment and management, but the only way to 100% diagnose a cervical disc is with an MRI (approx £250 private). As I said, I could still treat without an mri if you wish. If you would like to book in we are open now with all safety measures in place, give me a call and we'll get you booked in to be examined. Hope that helps you."

I then told him I'd give it another week as I've learned how to manage over the years and he said :
"No problem. Long term though with all those symptoms, i advise get a cervical mri off your gp, or I can send you private. That's not saying you need surgery or anything drastic, I'm sure it can be managed with conservative care, but at least then you have a 100% diagnosis which helps us treat you as clinicians too."

So there you have it. Thing is, sometimes as it's selling back into place it can be excruciating. Fun times ahead.

Cheers buddy.

Stay safe.
