> Rules

Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Funky Blues Rhythm by Stephane Lucarelli

Been a while since I posted one of these, but I said I'd make one with my new guitar so here it is.

Hi mate! Welcome back to REC and congrats on your new guitar!

You have a very good sense of groove for funk guitar. You could keep timing tight during the whole lesson and that's not a small thing. This one requires a lot of feeling and concentration to sound like that. There are some moments, mostly when you play single notes where you seem to be less sure of what's coming and that result on notes that are a bit weaker or maybe a very small timing detail but nothing really serious, it will disappear playing this one more times.

Two things that I note different and that you could think / work on it are tone and dynamics. The original lesson has a warmer and more balanced tone which fits much better with the backing, and at the same time I feel that Stephane is giving a more organic sound to his track thanks to the use of dynamics. I would work a bit on both elements.

Other than that, this is a very good take. Keep on rocking!

Hey matey,

Welcome back to the REC Zone and around GMC smile.gif Gabi pointed out a lot of improtant aspects and in order not to repeat what he said, I would like to talk about the tightness of your take - see, Stephane plays very tight and makes the chords sound shorter - they are 16th notes and they should be a bit more snappy, if I can say that. In your take they are a bit too loose and that takes away a bit of the groove.

Try to record over the original and match the feeling that Stephane has in the dynamics and groove of his take. I'm sure you will discover important differences which will help your take evolve to the next level.

Keep rocking!

Hey Llion, good to see you back. Or should I say 'bach' ?

The guys have given some good feedback already. One extra thing I would add is that your take does sound a little rushed in places, as you play in front of the beat quite a bit.

So, yeah, just to give you MORE to think about !!! tongue.gif
