Hello Kaaba! Welcome to your thread for Gab's Army! Here I will guide you to achieve your short and long term goals, designing routines, monitoring your playing, giving feedback, suggesting music and keeping you motivated.

This is the info that you share with me:

Hey man, your lessons have been a huge inspiration for me to keep on practicing! smile.gif
I would love to join your army, and my long term goal is to play original neo-classical songs (interesting melodies, high tempo alternate picking/sweep picking/string skipping, wide vibrato, bends etc)

My shorter term goal is to being able to play these at full speed:

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...lmsteen-lesson/
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...ssical-etude-2/

for the past month after joining GMC I've been playing guitar for every day almost all the time (5 hours+ a day maybe) and I've seen some pretty good results smile.gif Changed from very bad economy picking into alternate picking which is starting to flow really well.

Thanks! - Karri

Could you please share here some audios and/or videos of you playing?

Hey!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSG15sLtUuI

Heres a sample of me playing shrapnel style neo-classical lesson and Marcus Lavendells neoclassical etude 2.
Shrapnel style lesson I can play pretty decently except the last lick is pretty hard to get in sync, neoclassical etude 2 is way over my current skill level, I played it however to show where im at. Recorded first attempts so will be rough, but hopefully enough for you to see where I need to improve. The tone I just left on some blues preset, somehow the usual tones I use sound muddy when muting on higher strings.

Thanks!

Hi Kaaba! thanks for this videos. I can notice that you already have a good technique level and it's time to polish everything as well as expand it. Your fingers move fast, and you can keep timing tight most of the time. I note that you tend to lose timing when you play faster licks, and mostly when you have to cross or skip strings. Another thing that you could improve is the sound of your staccato playing. For any reason, the notes sound too dead. I suspect that it can be your palm muting (the pressure or position), your tone, or a combination of both things.

As you have a great amount of time to practice, we will start with a routine for this first week that covers different techniques to have a reference of your level on each of the techniques.

Neoclassical style requires a good control of alternate picking, legato, sweep picking, vibrato and string skipping. The good news is that we have a lot of stuff to master it. There are my suggestions for this first days:

Alternate Picking: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/move_y...le_finger!/

Legato: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/legato-stamina/

Vibrato: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Bens-Vibrato-Odyssey-5/

Sweep Picking: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...picking-lesson/

These lessons are my suggestions, but you can adjust the choices even more to your tastes. If it's possible share videos of you playing the parts that you learn to let me monitor your progress and give technique tips.

Thanks for the suggestions!

After few hours of practice this is where im at with alternate picking lesson (what a great exercise for pinky stamina):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2106kACzPY
This is again very rough, and I can see timing issues and theres unwanted noise while string skipping.
For sure I will continue practicing this lesson. Just thought to post this because if theres some issues im missing, you could point them out smile.gif

Ill happily post these progress videos if they are helpful, just let me know if you want me to completely master the lessons before submitting videos here. smile.gif

Hi Kaaba! I'm glad to know that you liked the lesson suggestions. It's also cool to already find a video of you playing one of the lessons!

Based on the previous videos and this one, I notice that you tend to practice at a faster bpm than your comfortable zone. I would suggest to go for the slower backing on this one, to be sure to play the whole thing clear and tight. The best road to perfection is practicing something well played many times until you can increase speed. If you practice a licks bad played, the result is that you will be able to play this licks faster but unclear. The other way is much more effective and consistent. It will also help you to focus on your movements to be sure that you are using your hands and fingers in an effective way.

Does it make sense?

Hey! Thanks for the feedback again, I will start looping these exercises at lower tempos smile.gif
I will post more progress videos later today smile.gif
Its great to get feedback and tips from a great guitarist, never had a chance for that before gmc, it gives whole new perspective for how and what to practice!
What you said makes perfect sense, thanks!
