My son will be a senior next year at USC, he switched his major to music theory.

Anyway, he just got his first job. They are building a Guitar Center in the city where he goes to the University, and he will be teaching piano and drums.

I'm so happy we started him early in music - playing piano at 4 years old. He plays tuba in the orchestra and keyboards in an insane metal band, sings in chorus. He loves everything from marching band, classical to rock and metal - although I don't believe he likes country at all.

Anyway - now I have hope that he may actually be able to do something with that music degree.

Wow what a cool job, this must be a big thing for him! I wish there were 'guitar centers' here.

Congratulations!

Yes - a very cool job for him, thanks. Getting a teaching gig at Guitar Center is a pretty special club to be in. All the people that work in those places are musicians; the sales people. And they all have a good knowledge of their particular musical interest - like you instructors here at GMC.

He'll be doing sales in between students. He's excited.

My first job was working like a slave on a golf course. In retrospect it was a great job, very physical and being outside beats the hell out of sitting behind a desk all day. Then I worked flipping burgers at McDonalds, talk about major suckage, then delivering electrical supplies before I finally found a job at an ad agency which I went to school for.

He hit a jackpot of a first job if you ask me. And will look great on a resume for future positions.

Indeed, it will be interesting to hear how we likes it. How old is he?

He just turned 20.

This is the first time since he started college that he has the time to work a part time job, because of his studies. Up until now he has been a part of many musical endeavors with the university - which has taken him to so many cool places. He was involved with a couple of school bands as well as the marching band and the orchestra which took up all his time after classes.

But he is now living off campus and realizes he needs more money than the allowance I can afford to give him, so he pursued a job, and he is still in his metal band which is not affiliated with the school.

Me too man! I'm worried that degree in music theory would land him a job as a gas station attendant (not that there's anything wrong with that), but with how expensive 4 years of college is, you hope your children can do something with what they studied.

We only wish that because we haven't experienced how awful most guitar centers are.

Yes - that's what they told him. He makes $20/hour, and when there are no students he makes $8/hour in sales.

I'm okay with that, this isn't a career - it's a learning experience. Ultimately he would teach students on his own, but this teaches him how to teach, and markets him as an individual at the same time. He doesn't have to go out and find students - they come to him.

So as a career for a full time position, not so great, but as a student attending college full time, excellent real world experience with a dash of prestige in the local music community.

It's all good.

The most valuable jobs are the ones that teach you what you want to do with your life, and what makes you happy.

Many people don't have a clue about this and fumble in the dark in pursuit of that well paid dream job...which really does not mean anything if they aren't happy with their life/situation.

Given his age, it's probably a good experience and a good start, it's not like he's trying to support a family.

It's also probably good for networking and finding private students too!
