> Rules

Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Hand Synch II by Ben Higgins

Perhaps something went wrong in the final quick part. I can't quite tell, been looking at it forever now.

Hi Cael,

I think that your alternate picking technique looks and sounds really well. You have a very economical technique based on consistent picking and small movements. The first pattern started a bit weird regarding timing but then you accommodated your playing and could continue tight. However, there are some little moments where your 16th notes could be tighter (00:14, 00:23) and also close to the end where I notice that the licks are not completely consistent.

These things that I'm marking are very small details to fix, the overall sounds good and I noted them only playing strongly attention and listening to the take more than once.

Keep on the good job!

That was really good. Not only was the timing good but your tone control was good too.. no string noise or anything like that. A lot of people have trouble controlling unwanted noise when picking across the strings so that was nice to see.

In the end lick I think you might have just played a note out of sequence which threw the whole pattern into a different point of the bar.. that's all. One interesting exercise you might be interested in is to begin that last sequence (including the 8th note part immediately before the descent) with an upstroke. This would change the string crossing mechanics. Some people prefer the way it is in the lesson but others thrive more on using more 'outside' picking. Might just be something worth playing with.

The first lick started a bit shaky in timing until you got used to the tempo of the backing track and adjusted the picking speed. Maybe try playing this one with a bit more palm muting applied more similar to Ben's lesson in order to get all notes to sound a bit more punchy. This will help you to hear if the hands sync is good, especially for the ending fast lick. Overall, your picking and fretting hand seem to be efficient. You could experiment with maybe bringing down the picking hand thumb for support more down towards the neck middle. This might give you a stronger and more stable support and hand angle when fretting down notes.
