Agreed, but i dont think theres much incentive to do that as a group, only individually.

If we hold this as an 'event' i think it will draw a bigger crowd than just the upload board.

If we brandish it a competition, i think people will get carried away by speed and lose the plot maybe... blink.gif

-Ben

well if they get carried away. Then they will learn that its not all about speed. Call it an event. That sounds more nice, and pleasant!!

Exactly ben, that is why we have the upload board. Lol if we want some competition I guess Ill go upstairs and get out the hairspray, I give love a bad name wub.gif
-John

edit: It depends how you put this action into words, Constructive Criticism, YES! Competition,NO!

Leave Hairy Metal alone biggrin.gif

When you see Michael Angelo playing in Nitro with his insane solos i don't care if it's a hairy metal or something else!!

And btw. if there was no competition in the world we would still be in Stone Age! But contest on GMC might go in a wrong direction.

That just depends on the people take it when they lose, or win. I know i will lose for sure. Its just because i know im not as good as the others, but i realize they have either practiced harder, or have been playing longer. So it wouldnt hurt me one bit, but other might just take it the total opposite. It all depends on how the people take it. We will never know if we dont try. It doesnt hurt to try!!

so, should we try this? 2 things will happen for sure:

1. Losers will get very dissapointed and frustrated, and put guitar down for a while, or forever.
2. Losers will get HIGHLY motivated by the winner, and will practice ALOT everyday.

either way, i know ill loose, but i know, ill always choose option 2, at least ill try to.

Ill choose option 2. And let me tell you something. If somes chooses 1. Then they have a problem. Because im sure they have listened to some amazing guitarists before. Why didnt that just make them put it down? The pros Gilbert, Vai, Lane, Marcello, Malmsteen. They were all beginners once to. Do they not know. They all sucked at one point in time also, and just practiced hard to get to where they are now!!!

We could only hope that would be the end result of this .

Ya this seems good but I don't think it would be the actual competition that would be bad, but just stating on the site that t heres a competition. This could give someone a false image of what the site is really all about. Like others have said maybe hold an "event" or just have a new style of lesson that is actually just a thread with a backing provided, contestants in the event try to create a solo to this and everyone reply to it. This could be a running event each month, where at the end one is chosen and put on the front page, or maybe just the member gets recognition there and it all begins again for the next month.
I'm just typing things as they come into my head so sorry if this has been suggested already, just throwing ideas around.

I am glad you brought this up! Of course we are going to have contests! biggrin.gif

We have been thinking about this for a while and I even think there are going to be quite some cool gear prizes! biggrin.gif

However, I do agree with what's been said - and the contests we have planed so far don't have anything to do with actual playing... The reason being we did one of those a while back (you should be able to find traces of that by searching the forum) - and I felt very uncomfortbale choosing a "winner".

This doesn't prevent us from arranging more advanced "playing -contests" with different categories of contestants (depending on how long you have played etc.)

I hope to get back with a first contest in a few months - if it's a success I would like to have them more regularly.

Kris

regarding the motivation thing.. It might not make people put down the guitar and stop playing but it may make them question what they are doing currently with their guitar abilities. I know last night i saw Symphony X play, and watching the bands before and then watching Michael Romeo play i now reagret that ive started putting time into a band. I started thinking that im nowhere near good enough for a band. Ive kinda shoved that thought behind me when i realised that all of them are like 25+ and im only 18.. ive still got a few more years of practice smile.gif what might be fun rather than a backing tracks free for all, Is allow people to chose and have battles biggrin.gif each pair choose a backing track and then each record a solo, and they get to choose who they battle so no begginers will expect to do well and then get blown away. Or perhaps another idea would be teams where if a begginin writes the backing track and a more experienced player solos over it making it even out and the teams seem better. Or my final idea, is recordings of covers of different songs, so no matter your skill level you can cover a song and therefore join the competition smile.gif.. all though i dunno if the coveres are allowed due to legal reasons..

I like the guitar duel idea from smikey. Then we can be like I Challenge you to a duel! And then the two duelist pick a backing track and ofcourse solo over it. And then members can post there vote on which solo they liked more. So it would be majority rules. And of course giving some constructive critisism.

Id definitly do it smile.gif
