Ok, I've had a try but for some reason I am struggling with timing. Playing longer notes over a beat like this is tricky for me, is this normal for a beginner? I keep wanting to replicate the beat when I play the notes on the guitar, I hope that makes sense. It's all part of the learning process I guess but it does feel odd to me. smile.gif I can't even hear if it is in time or not rolleyes.gif

Hi Phil, no, this is not in time. Please try something over the progression recorded by Ricky to see if it helps to find the right rhythm. Ok?

I put some chords on the backing track drums that Gab gave you, the chords are Bm, Amaj, Gmaj. Hope it serves you of ideas.

Thanks Ricky! This sound good! I'd suggest this scale to play over this one:

I'm really trying to come up with something that will fit the picture, but it's not exactly working. How long do I have? smile.gif

You welcome, please feel free to ask any question you have, I am by no means a "Rockstar" but i do know a little and if i don't know i will certainly guide to the right place. And i have all the time in the world since i retired from the military. I try to help Gabriel since his hands are full with like a million people, plus a full time band.

Awwww, now I feel bad asking Gab loads of questions and taking up his time sad.gif

Here's another attempt. Is it normal to struggle playing a piece like this over a drum pattern like that? Or is it just me?

You should not fell bad, thats the reason he is here. I guess you miss understood what i was trying to do here. Some people don't get that the instructors here are professional musicians, and they get frustrated when they don't receive a fast answer to their questions. But anyway i believe you take is sounds really good. But lets see what Gabriel points out.

Thanks, I know he is a professional musician and I appreciate everything he and all the tutors do on here, even the students help out if they can, which is great. This place in my opinion is better than a private tutor that you see once a week so I never get frustrated if I don't get a quick reply. Not only are they pro musicians, they have a life to live too wink.gif

Thanks for your help Ricky, I appreciate it smile.gif

Now we are talking Phil!! smile.gif

Now the rhythm of your melody is going with the drums. There is some room to adjustment but it's there, it's clear. Well done! It's great to see that this creativity workout is also a good excuse to train technique and hearing skills. Keep on working!

Thanks Gab,

What did you mean about "hearing skills"? Also, any idea why I was struggling with the rhythm without the chords? Is it a normal beginner thing or just me?

I mean that this workout also helps to train your ear. About playing over drums without chords, as everything it's related to practice. The more you do it the more familiar you'll be with it. wink.gif

Hi Laurent, I like the concept behind this. The idea is clear and promising. I think that with some polishing, mostly on your guitar playing this could be an horror masterpiece, in the style of musicians like Rob Zombie, John 5 and Buckethead.

Have you also recorded the backing for this one?
