Hello guys! This new workout will be based on developing your own voice on guitar.

GMC lessons are great excuses to learn new licks, new scales, new techniques, new styles and that's why we have a section called "REC" in which we invite you to emulate the instructors playing in order to polish, develop and expand your guitar playing.

However, that's just the first step, once you can play the licks from the lessons, and even when you still couldn't master them, there is another important thing to do... CREATE YOUR OWN MUSIC. And by "create your own music", I refer to create your own voice on guitar, create your own licks and solos.... in other words to develop your personal playing.

How to do it?

Well, there are off course many ways and different approaches to develop your own style but this thread shows one of my favorites. This is what I recommend and expect from you on this workout:

- Once you've worked on a GMC lesson, (no matter the level or concept that covers) record yourself jamming over its backing track using the scales suggested by the instructor.

You can take the licks from the lessons, and create your own variations, you can mix licks, you can change the order of the phrases, you can just change a few notes, or you can create a whole different idea. Everything is welcome. Also, It would be great if you can comment us what was your approach.

You can also work on specific areas of your playing, for example: You can decide to work and explore your vibrato technique creating simple melodies using the scale suggested over the backing. Record yourself and share it here. I'll give you feedback, and other GMCers will learn and get inspired by you to work on similar concepts.

So, to simplify the main idea of this thread:

- TAKE THE BACKING TRACK OF THE LESSON THAT YOU ARE PRACTICING AND RECORD YOURSELF JAMMING OVER IT.

You can be an absolute beginner or a extremely avanced player to participate here. Everybody is welcome!!

LET'S MAKE SOME MUSIC!!

Do you have any questions? Who is in?

Hi Gabriel !

It's a pleasure to feel that you're so motivated to help us progressing at guitar playing !
Sometimes, when I'm working a lesson, I let my mind and my fingers do what they want instead of the tab. It helps me to be more relax to continue the work. But I never recorded that...

If I have something interesting in the next days, I'll be in ! wink.gif

Gab,
Would it be ok to use backing from an older lesson that I have done? My current lesson is tricky and I'm worried that playing different things over the backing might cause confusion in my fingers. I hope I've explained myself.
Cheers

Maybe it's time to make it slightly different each day, don't you think so?

Yes Phil! That's the idea, you can start with all the lessons that you've already worked.

I think you are correct Gab but I have tried to work out an alternating routine but I don't know how to do it so that each day compliments the other day. Do you have any suggestions? I am away this weekend but from Monday I will be back 1000%.

Cheers buddy. wink.gif

Beautiful playing! I like the feeling that this improvisation has, your playing is tasty. I just feel that it¡s lacking more defined phrases. The phrases connect cool, but there isn't a leit motive or idea that keeps in my mind after listening to this one. I feel that you are close, but you still need to focus more on it. I don't mean that all the phrases must be like that, but I feel that in the second half you could define more an idea and develop it. Don't you feel it?

Also, some more dynamics could be good for this type of solo.

Thanks for being the first on sharing a "beyond the rec program" take! smile.gif

More relation between phrases, that can be achieved focusing more on the "call and response" idea while phrasing.

Hello Gab,

I've just got back, will do some practise tonight then from tomorrow I'm on it 1000%.

What I meant re your comment "Maybe it's time to make it slightly different each day, don't you think so?", is that I have tried to work out an alternating routine BUT, I'm not sure how to split it up for the best results so that each day complements the previous and/or the next day.

I currently get around an hour and a half per day sometimes more sometimes less, this includes tuning, finding lessons, opening programs, creating recordings etc, it's amazing how many minutes all the little things take away.
I currently try to fit in each day, the following:
Tuning
Bending to pitch
Ear training workshop
Timing workshop
My current solo
My current rhythm

I then try to fit in the following:
Creativity workshop (Not required daily but have to do it when inspiration takes me)
Current collab (Not required daily but have to do it when inspiration takes me)
Beyond the REC program (I haven't decided how to fit this in)

I really worry about skills declining if not done daily sad.gif

I was wondering if you have any ideas on how to split it up for the best.

Cheers

Phil

Now I got it mate.

Well, I feel that some of those topics are very related, while other require diary practice to see results soon.

Let' group topics that are similar:

Creativity:

Creativity workshop
Current collab
Beyond the REC program

Technique:

Lead techniques
Rhythm techniques
Alternate Picking
Timing workout

Ear training

Tuning
Bending to pitch (this one is also related to technique)
Ear training workshop

As you have around 1 hour and a half each day, I would divide you work like this:

DIARY ROUTINE:

5 minutes: warming up + massages and stretches

30 minutes: Ear training

30 minutes: Technique

30 minutes: Creativity

What to work each day?
On ear training, you can 10 minutes to each task, or you can work on 1 each day and repeat every 3 days. During technique moment, I would work 10 minutes on alternate picking, 10 minutes on rhythm and other 10 minutes on any other technique that can be changed each day or week (legato, hybrid picking, etc).

Finally, when it's time for creativity, I recommend you to work on 1 workout each day since all of them are totally related. While recording your takes or ideas, it will be a good plan to also focus on some technique stuff like vibrato, dynamics and ornamentation.

Does this plan clarify your next steps?

Thanks Gab,
Where would you recommend I put my current Darius solo lesson?
I'm assuming that when you say "rhythm? I should be working on my Hives lesson?
Cheers smile.gif

That's an awesome idea Gabe, as a matter of fact it reminds me of the kind of thing we do when making a collab, only this time we get to choose our favourite backing from thousands, and that is really nice cool.gif
