First off, I had no idea where best to put this, so I decided that the main forum would be the most convenient, correct me if I'm wrong please...

Now this has come to my mind as I was just typing up some posts. I know that al lot of people nowadays download all their music instead of going down to the local musicstore to buy the original album. Sometimes this is done for the simple reason that the musicstore does not sell the music that you like, but most people just don't want, or haven't got the money, to buy them. Now, regardless of your motives I bet that everyone has donwloaden something of the internet at least once or twice. Now this led to my question, what statement/rules has the GMC forum regarding this issue.

I've been around a few boards over the years and saw that some of them stated that it was forbidden to say things that would lead to believe that you are supporting downloading. I'm referring to sentences like:

"Man, I just downloaded this awesome song/movie."

or

"If you wanna know what I'm talking about, just download the song/album"

Such things might provoke people into illegal activities such as downloading.

Regards,

MerV

I'm certain GMC doesn't in any way allow downloading - sharing, spoken, refeered to or otherwise.

Thats a very good question ...

In general, my moderation policy (backed by Kris) is as follows:

Initial offences unless they are really nasty will get a friendly warning - usually I will just post to the thread and remind people, also I will always censor any innapropriate language.

Repeat offenders against any of the forum guidelines can expect penalties ranging from a less friendly warning, to a PM, which is more serious, and then after that we are into bans from the forum - I hate to do that so please don't make me!

Specific to file sharing and downloads, quoting from our shiny new posting guidelines:

Posts should not refer to illegal activities such as drug use, illegal file sharing, pirating of software etc.

So as moderator I can't condone a post which says something like "awesome, go to x.y.z.com they have free copies of all Metalica ever!" - that would be immediately deleted, and the perpetrator warned.

Something less explicit like "Hey, you know you can get that piece of software for free if you know where to look don't you" will get you a friendly warning. Also, comments along the lines of "I ahem acquired GP5" will probably set of alarm bells.

If you just say something like "I just got the new Metalica album" ... well I don't know or care how you got it and I can't object to that. Even if you say "I just downloaded the new Metalica album" I will assume that you bought it from iTunes or somewhere like that unless you give me reason to believe otherwise smile.gif

The key is in the guideline above - posts should not refer to illegal downloads.

Hope that is clear,

Regards,

Andrew

i don't know what's on your server and I'm guessing here but since it's your server it's your problem. But, any GMC-folders I'm sure should be clean from illeagal stuff.
If you have other folders I think you can still share them, but to make sure hand out a separate user/pw for that. All to keep Kris and GCM's back safe.
Just a suggestion without knowing what's on your server, ok. smile.gif

I think its okay to host whatever you want, and share it with whomever you want, as long as its not copyrighted by someone other then yourself...

And thanks for clearing that out Andrew, it seems I better read the posting guidelines again...

nobody is going to give you a hard time if the admin folks are making a concerted effort, not for a site like this. the justice system runs on reasonableness for the most part, at least in the US. I am sure things are similar in Europe. In fact US law is rooted in English common law.

The list of offending countries is very long. China is generally thought of as the worst offender, but actually there are many just as bad, if not worse. China is just large, so they stand out. I would be careful about broad brushing all of Europe as clean. Things may be changing in China. Not because of us, but because now Chinese companies are suing other Chinese companies.
