Hey,

Can y ou give me some advices to make a 80' s/ 90's heavy métal sound.
I think start with a Marshall amp simulation (which model ?) And a tube screamer overdrive or a boss ds1 distorsion i'm not sure. What will y ou do?

Hi Alex! Yes, a Marshall is a good starting point. I would start with some kind of jcm800 which is my favorite of this brand. Use a 4x12 Marshall cabinet by the way and add a tube screamer for lead guitar. During the 80's reverb and delay was overused so experimenting with some extra effects for creating that ambiance can also help.

Then, experiment with EQ comparing A/B with tones from the bands that you like from those years. Feel free to share here your samples and I will guide you.

Hi Gab,

Here's the Take 1 of Manowar for Beginner.

There's still some work. It's hard for me to have a constant palm mute.
I've missed a note in the final solo but it's not the essential at the time (the solo doesn't sound good yet).
I'm not comfortable with the distorsion.
I need your 1st feedback and your opinion about the tone.
Thanks

edit : I wasn't satisfied of my 1st take so I have made a new one this morning.

My comments of this take are the same than the 1st one I ve posted yesterday (I've deleted it).

Hi Alex, this lesson needs more time of work. The rhythm part is not bad but has room to sound tighter and more consistent, while the solo is the part that shows more problems regarding timing and other elements like bending and vibrato.

At first I have to say that your guitar has tuning issues on this one and that's the thing that makes everything sound bad on this take. Besides this, I also think that your tone needs some tweak. I would start experimenting with your EQ balance. Here in my monitors your tone lacks presence and treble, so start by lowing bass and mid bass and/or increasing frequencies around 3khz and 5khz and see what happens.

Hi Alex, thanks for the video!

This lesson is on the right track, you can play the whole thing at tempo and clean. Here are some details to adjust:

- Tuning: There are pitches issues mostly when you play power chords with root in 5th string. I'm not sure if this is a tuning issue or if it's related to fingers pressure. Check it out.

- Timing: The feel of the galloping has room to sound tighter. It's not totally regular, please put some attention to it.

- Solo: The solo section could sound more consistent. Practice it over the original lesson and try to emulate bending, vibrato and dynamics of the original.

- Tone: I feel that it is lacking some "body", it's sounding like a metal fuzz which would be good for black metal but not very cool for Manowar style. Experiment with EQ and maybe less distortion.

Thanks Gab, I will check that.

I'm not working lessons a lot at this time (15/20 minutes per day) because I work on side musical projects : improvisation and composition. I'd like to participate on workouts but now, I've not enough time.

But...
...I'm glad to introduce you my last composition work

Hi,

I've discovered, thanks for the creativity workout, I love to create some music so, I spend a lot of time doing this.
I've created a Bandcamp account to share it
You can follow it
Here

I spent time to create great ambiance sounds and I think the mp3 compression kills the global sound, here, I can share them in Wav format.

I spend time too, on improvisations collaborations in another forum. We created a Chord progression and we play one after one, that's cool.
On the 1st workout we were 11 to play.
If you want to listen it, you can download it
HERE

I play on 4st position. (at 2'12)
It was a minor blues in Cm. I've created the chord progression using a keyboard and a Rhodes VSTi, another guy (Farine who is here too) has created a rythme guitar.
The guy playing just before me (at 1'45) is Daeron who is here too smile.gif)

I come at the 5st grid.

Of course I continue to work my lessons, I've just less time biggrin.gif

Great stuff Alex!! smile.gif

Your new bandcamp is a great idea and I'm proud to know that the creativity workout has awaken this in you! I didn't understand where you can share wav files... here? or at bandcamp?

I've heard the whole improvisation and it's really nice to hear. Everybody is playing tasty phrasing on it. I think that we need a more fusion collab at GMC! Both you and Daeron did a good job. His phrasing has a cool vibe, and a coherent structure. Your solo keeps a similar groove but has more dynamic work. It's like hearing people talking, each has it's own voice. Very nice.

At Bandcamp wink.gif

I've done a video. I'm still searching a tone.
My play seems to sound better but it isn't it yet..

I guess I'll be more comfortable playing this standing. I'll try for the next take.

The P.O.V is weird at first sight I use an object to have my leg higher biggrin.gif

Hi Alex, that's great! I'll create a bandcamp account, is it free? how many albums does it allow?

About the video, you don't look comfortable with this position, your left arm and hand doesn't look good and I think that this is having impact in what you are playing. The chords sound a bit out of tune, and you have timing issues, even more in the solo section. Please try a more comfortable posture.
