The much maligned line 6 spider amp. it's semi ubiquitous just because of it's price point. The good news is, you CAN get a decent METAL sound out of it per this video with FLUFF. smile.gif Of course, he is using a $300 microphone ( to my a $100 amp), but that's beside the point. It's possible ;O)

So if you have a spider and you want to get decent tones with it, just buy a microphone that costs three times what your amps costs. Or save the three hundred and use it when you trade in the spider.

It amazing what you can make work when you have no other choice and are willing to take a little time.

About 5 years ago I had a festival gig 150 miles or so out of town. I had all my gear except ... my amp head. Cab, 2 guitars, pedals, cords, extra stuff, etc. but w/o the head ... no go. So the band before us is using this Line 6 spider II combo, the bigger one with 30 watts and a 12" spkr, and mic'd with a 57. I had no choice but to borrow it. I set it to a Marshall semi-clean/semi-crunch tone (I think I set it on 'crunch' and then turned the gain down and the master all the way up), plug in my pedal board, tweak some of the pedal gain levels and go.
Long story short - it was fine. Yeah sure, it wasn't as responsive as whatever tube head I was planning on using but honestly, no one noticed the difference. At least not enough to comment.

When you need it to work, you get it to work.

this is what my practice amp is( 30 watt version ), they have a nice distortion so i am not surprised. The problem is they are very one dimensional, you can get one nice tone at a time, but need to tweak things every time you need a different tone (IMO) and their effects suck major u no what

He is using a $300 mic on a $100 amp and then tweaking it in post just to get it to sound decent, but it goes to show, you can really make nearly anything sound decent smile.gif

Reminds me of OLA ENGLUND just a bit. Even when he used the Micro Orange and the Spider, he still manged to make it sound just like OLA always does. smile.gif
