Well I went and did it. I pulled the trigger on a new Orange 50 watt Rockerverb MK III 2X12 combo. Good thing I did it today too because the gal at the music store got on the phone right away to order one and found that the distributor in Georgia only had one left. blink.gif
I also ordered a cover for it and while I was at the store and picked up a 2 switch footswitch for channel switching and to engage or disengage the attenuator. The reverb is also switchable but I figured I could do without that, at least for now.
I also picked up the Orange pre eq (Bax Bangeetar) for good measure. Now all that is left to do is wait. Orange says they will get it shipped out tomorrow so I should be seeing her in a couple weeks. biggrin.gif Needless to say, my wallet is a bit on the lighter side today. rolleyes.gif Oh well, that's GAS for ya!

That is a great amp! This is going to be a difficult couple of weeks waiting for it to arrive smile.gif.

Congrats!!! It's a small world smile.gif That Georgia ORANGE AMP distributor is the same place I took those pix a while back and where I borrowed the JIM root head for that vid I did on it. The guy that runs the place is very cool and works with wads of great artists from all over the world and custom builds rigs for tons of bands. Those are killer amps and will last forever. Congrats on getting one of the last new ones left!

P.S. PIX AND RECORDINGS!!!!! smile.gif

Thanks, Todd. I remember! smile.gif I had requested a demo of the MK II after you demoed that Jim Root! rolleyes.gif It's all good though, I got to try out one myself finally. smile.gif It won't be one of the last ones left , just the last of that stock. They will have some more in April which is when the music store up here will get their next shipment. I was just lucky I didn't have to wait that long. I have been polishing up my chops and knocking off the rust in anticipation of her.

Thanks, Rammikin. I am jonesing for it already and it's only been 2 days since I ordered it. I might have to go back to the music store and play the standalone head version into a 4x12 to get my fix. smile.gif

I'd almost forgot about that! Now you can give us a video review of the MK! smile.gif Also glad they are going to make some more of them. Great amp. Great value too for a rockerverb head and 2x12 orange cab stuffed in one box!

P.S. If anyone in the thread is still looking for a splitter/combiner, MORLEY makes a handy 3 way device that's on sale@ musicians friend called the abc switch for about $80'

That was the thing that sold me on the combo in the end. It has all the same outputs as the standalone. It is the exact same head. So I could plug a couple 4x12 cabs into it if I ever needed to. Since the combo has the open back, it is probably going to be a little different than the 4x12 setup that I demoed in the store, maybe a little less punchy? I don't know. We will see. smile.gif

Here is a vid that shows the amps he had built for primus. The guy from primus was using heads/cabs and combos. I asked why and basically he wanted to be able to take the combos off the bus for practice and stack them all up on top each other for a wacky combo/head/cab thing.

Some folks like the open back better as it has a bit more air to it and uses the room as part of the tone. The closed back is a bit punchier right in front so it's best for sticking an sm57 in front of the cone for recording : )

Hello folks,

Little question about my Hotbird, I can play through it into my amp or straight into the Scarlett even if it isn't plugged in, if I engage one of the footswitches it goes silent.

It may be a silly question, because why would I want to play though it switched off but, I don't want to do that, it's just something I discovered, I guess what I'm asking, is, does it tell you anything about the circuitry? Or are all pedals the same?

Cheers folks

It must be true-bypass type pedal, meaning without power it can carry the signal untouched. The other type is buffered pedal, doesn't carry the signal if not powered but when powered (even on bypass) it works as a buffer meaning keeping the integraty of the signal specially if long cables are used.

record 2 chords with and without the pedal (guitar direct) pluged to the soundcard, if you don't hear a difference or the difference doesn't both you its ok to keep the setting that way.

Thanks Mertay,

I personally can't hear a difference. My ears are still in training smile.gif Ignore the wave shape the two with the gentle curves tool ages to be processed for some reason and I guess that's why they display like that, some glitch somewhere rolleyes.gif

On headphones if feels like its a bit less lively, although I can't be 100% sure as its hard for someone to strum exactly the same for 3 examples.

Direct will always sound a bit more lively as the signal is less affected till it reachs the soundcard. I'd say don't mind much the difference if you notice it but just to be safe keep the cables as short as possible without losing any comfort.

Keep in mind if you ever would want a tuner, get a boss pedal tuner as its buffered. If you want to learn about buffers, true-bypass etc. these guys recently shared a video about it;

Don't mind the techy speaking if it gets complicated, the sound examples during the video helps understand.

Thanks Mertay,
I've read a lot about high end pedals being true bypass but Boss and the other big boys do buffered, why is that? People always seem to go on about true bypass being the best but I'm not sure I understand.

Cheers dude

Yeah I guess thats about how marketing affects minds.

True-bypass requires hand soldering cause of the switch used but really its no big deal. A quality buffer won't color the tone in a negative way and boss pedals, ibanez ts9 etc. are accepted to have good buffers.

I have both a boss and ts9 and did listening tests. The boss did open up the guitars tone in a good way while the ts9 is very transparent. Although the cables I used aren't long I could hear the difference.

Stacking buffered pedals though can be risky...when you have the time check out the video, the guys tell everything needed to know about this (and every guitarist should have a basic understanding about this).

In my experience with my or friends gear, placing a buffered pedal right after the guitar makes a subtle but good difference wether its working or not. Thats why a boss tuner makes sense but really it can be any kind of buffered pedal...tc electronic recently released a buffer.

'If' it was in a chain of pedals one may not always want it on, especially in a live situation.

All bypass's are definitely not equal. As Mertay mentioned, the Boss buffer is generally a good one some others have horrible buffers. Honestly, if your running less than 18 feet (5 + meters) of cable including the pedal patch cables, you'd barely notice anything true bypass'd or buffered.

Thanks Ken,

When I said "why would I want to play though it switched off", I actually meant switched off as in absolutely no power to it, no battery or mains, (I run it via mains at home, I hate swapping batteries mad.gif )
Whether or not this makes a difference to your response, I don't know smile.gif
Cheers

Ah yes, I thought perhaps you might have meant that too. Either way it is definitely 'true' (hardwire) bypass.
I have been in live situations where a pedal has failed for whatever reason and/or the battery died. A true bypass effect will still pass signal. I may not have had the 'effect' but at least I didn't cut out completely.

Well I've gone and bought something that you all will think is a pointless purchase but I've had the blues because of THIS so I've done some retail therapy smile.gif
I've bought a Boss GT-100 that is basically the floor version of my GT-001 with some extra functions.
I've got it mainly to save swapping cables when I want to record direct or from amp, I can send exactly the same patches to both units it's just that the 100 is a bit more versatile than the 001.
The 001 is £179 retail and the 100 is £309 retail, I got this for £131 so it's a good buy for what I want it for smile.gif
Please don't shout at me Mertay tongue.gif

I got it off the Bay, it looks brand new and comes with a Gator gig bag. Delivery is £20 but it's still a bargain, they've been going for over £200.
