Hey, great website. Anyway, was just a question really about my technique.. i usually warm up with some chromatic excercise (3-4-5-6 on all strings then 6-5-4-3 back up), and I practice this with a metronome.

So, when I usually attempt to play fast my picking hand just sorta hovers over the strings but today i was resting my palm (on my thumbs side) on the lower string when i'm picking the high notes and on the pickguard when picking the low E. I was playing at 15bpm faster than I have ever done due to this.

Was wondering is this common or is it a 'bad habbit' to get myself into. Do you do this?

Also if anyone has any tips on how to increase my speed, excercices etc or how long it took them to reach a speed which allowed them to play the songs they really wanted to then that would be very much welcome.

Thank you chaps.

The picking hand should always stay in contact with bridge or close to the bridge because hovering is a bad thing to do as you won't be able to control your moves. Usually when i play it's the wrist that touches the bridge of the guitar.

thanks a lot. I'll work on it, I seem to be muting the low E when i'm resting on bridge. I'm playing a Fender Stratocaster if that makes any difference. Any tips?

It's good to mute low strings when playing high strings. When you move up to low strings than you un-mute the low strings.

It depends what kind of bridge you have there - if it's not a Floyd Bridge than it's a little problem for right hand - at least it was for me when i played one.

I mute low E string when i'm playing it I mean, i can't seem to rest my palm on the bridge without touching the string, is there something i'm doing wrong?

These bridges are VEEEEEERY uncomfortable fir this style of picking.

I can't describe it in words... you'll have to try out different positions - just sit and try to play with different positions.

no, nothing wrong. only major issue with that bridge is with the height adjustment screws, which stick up on top of the bridge. i set my action pretty low, so they do stick up on the middle 4 strings. and they are rough, a lot of friction trying to slide one's palm over those. it appears to me that the adjustment screws on the end strings are shorter, and they are near flush with the bridge. i think I will see if I can get my hands on some of those, to replace the adjustment screws in the middle. you may be having this problem, the screws elevate your palm, and you can't ease into a nice damping position.

Just as Muris said - get to a guitar store and try it. I am in love with Edge right now because it's perfect on top where you keep your hand. Nothing sticks out and your hand is free. Floyd Rose tremolos are also great for that.

the ibanez cult has now commandeered this thread. to the original poster, just treat them like you do the hare krishnas banging on drums at the airport, or those two guys wearing white shirts on bicycles that come to your door.
