Super congrats on finishing a song and making a video for it. Often, just completing a song is the hardest part. Not to mention making a full video for it. WELL DONE!! smile.gif

I like the playing and I like the video as it's all got a cohesive message. It's often easy to get caught in the trap of simply using a static image or just using only the guitar performance as the basis of a vid. Kudos on cutting together a good vid that cuts to the music. Nice smile.gif

The playing is quite nice as well. I like the solo quite a bit smile.gif Shows a variety of techniques and styles.

Question time!

1.)Did you consider any guitar harmonies for any parts of the solo?

2.)Where did you get the other footage? Is it stock or did you shoot?

Tip time!

1.)Perhaps a few less shots of playing the rythm bit during the next vid/edit. The background is static (not moving) and the camera angle is static as well. This can interupt the flow of visual motion. Watch some of your fave guitar music videos and notice how the camer often moves when shooting the guitar player. This is very tough when working on your own. It usually requires the help of someone else to run camera.

2.)Close ups during the solo. I'm a fan of some close ups and other angles during the solo to make it as visually dynamic as possible smile.gif

That's about it from me, well done!!

Todd

Hey Todd

Thank you so much for your respons. You give a lot of killertips that I will certainly remember for my next project. It's the first time that I worked with a green screen for the vid and I was alone in my basement. You are so right about the steady camera position. I will need to do that different next time. Doing these things and getting feedback is sucha great learning proces. Thank you for that !!!!!!
The other footage is stock.
Guitar harmonies? Could be great, indeed!

Thanks mate !!!

Happy to help!! Great job for your first to be sure! Having a friend move the camera around a bit can always add some dynamism to the shot smile.gif You did great mixing in the stock footage, it fit well smile.gif

Awesome! I've just checked the other song which impressed me, and this one has impressed me even more because of the killer groove and the catchy chorus. It's a very cool song!! I like the melancholic feel of the chorus, and how it contrasts with the verses.

My comments about this are the same than the previous one, for future songs, real instruments or more work on midi tracks will add a lot to your songs. Other than that this is killer, keep the great job!

Excellent! I like the solo on this even better than on Train Kept Rollin'. Would you be willing to upload the axefx preset you used on the solo?

One comment, and maybe it's just me, but your kick and bass seem to be masking each other on their attacks, so the kick loses some punch. Maybe compress those separately? Just an opinion, but the doubletime snare doesn't sound very convincing. It sounds too much like midi smile.gif. Great job!

Hi Gabriel,

Thanks. I'm very happy you like it. It's true that you can never replace a real drummer or bassplayer. On Train Keep Rollin I played the bass part myself but honestly, I never play bass so that part can really be a lot better.
The bass part on Dead Alley Cat is midi. As it was an intensive part, I didn't succeed to play it convincingly with my midicontroller and decided to program it in my sequencer. Later I applied some groove quantize to make it more "human". I didn't wanted to drive that too far to keep the bass close to the drums. Maybe I should have tweaked some more. Problem is also that when I work on sucha project, my ears addapt very quickly to faults. Very often I work on something for hours, and throw it away next morning.
As far as the drums, I mostly use smartloop samples and it's all, you know, cut copy and paste. I have that library for years now and should invest in their new, multitrack samples. Obviously, on one track , I get problems in the mix as I cannot control the kick, snare or anything else separately. I did cut out the kick in every sample and placed it on another track for that purpose. I recently bought The Komplete Ultimate series from Native Instruments. There are a lot of awesome virtual instruments in that package, but I'm still discovering them.
Virtual instruments will never come near any real instrument. Although they get better every year, there will always be the factor of our perfect human imperfections. On the other hand, I really like working on my songs this way, in my own tempo. It's a huge learning proces that I fell in love with and hopefully I will become better.

Thanks for your respons and support mate !!!!!

Hi Rammikin

Thanks for responding. Every guitarpart, including the solo was recorded with the Ibanez and the preset : Hell's Glockenspiel (ACDC preset). In my AXE FX it's preset 81. For the guitar on the left I added a tremolo, and recorded one track. The guitar on the right are 3 separate tracks. I recorded every track using simply a different setting with the EQ guitar knob and panned them respectively 50, 60 and 90. It's a trick I learned out of a book : mixing secrets.
For the solo I kicked in the drive, already provided in the preset. It's a Tubescreamer modulation, called T808 OD.

I struggled A LOT with the kick and bass in this song. The mastering was done by StudioPros but I had to do that twice. First time, the bas was way too loud (my fault). My studiomonitors are not so good and I should invest in better ones (All in time!!). I Always check things on different audio systems but it remains difficult without good monitors.
You're right about the doubletime snare. That sounds like a gunmachine and I should have tweaked that more.

Thanks for your opinion and advice, I learn from this !!!!

Take care

Native Instruments KOMPLETE is a killer package smile.gif There are wads of drums kits in it. I had it installed for ages myself. It's a complex bunch of software but you can get used to it. If you have any budget left, I'd still suggest EZ drummer 2 just because of how simple it is to use and how good it sounds. Of course there are other more pricey packages, but they are more complex as well. The shortest path to decent midi drums IMHO is still ez drummer. I've got the first version with some expansion packs and still love it smile.gif

first off ,Great job. Lot o work putting it together , The critic I have in the first half of the solo it sound like a few notes did not quite make it to the right pitch and to me the vocals sit a little strong in the mix( feels like he isn't in the same room with band) , either way easy fixes \m/

Hi mate,

There's a lot of things that could be better in the mix, I'm still learning and should invest in better monitors. The mastering is done by Studiopros which is great. If they could do the mix too, the song would sound completely different ((A WHOLE LOT better !!!) But , you know, that's a financial issue. Mixing is expensive. I see it this way : I try to make it sound as good as I can and if ever, anything serious would come out of it, I can still have it mixed (and mastered) by a pro. And then the drums and bass would have to be played by a real player too.

The pitch issue, I hear a small "out of pitch" in the bend too. It's true.

Thanks for your advice !!!

Grtz Nico

I also use a lot of ideas from Mixing Secrets, what a great book!

Regarding your choice of virtual instruments, ask Gabriel what he uses for bass (jk, he uses a bass virtual instrument I wrote smile.gif).

I just upgraded from ez1 to ez 2 and let my just say , EZ 2 is awesome. It actually installed right over ex 1 , but now i have all effects that come with ez 2 on all my old songs and don't have to do it manually ( you still can if you want). I think it has just been amazing on how much more professional my songs sound with EZ 2

Hi Nico,

I don't know Komplete package but it must be full of great things. Currently I'm using Addictive Drummer 2 for drums and trillian for bass. I totally recommend both because are very versatile, easy to mix, and have great sound.

The main secret is to apply advanced mixing techniques to your mixes combined with some humanize tricks. Besides humanizing groove, I recommend humanizing intensity (which is called velocity in midi). This can have a great impact in the "reality" of your midi tracks and combined with good EQ, compressor and reverb management can improve your backing tracks a lot.

This is not anything that can be learnt and applied in 1 day or week, but keep this in mind and learn one new concept / trick each day. Your mixes will become better and better. The cool thing is that this is a never ending journey.

Happy to help! It's the best IMHO for the money of all the packages out there and there are TONS of drum pacakges! It's got a very handy drag and drop interface and tons of beats an entire songs ready to go!!!!! And the drums sound good smile.gif

Gabriel,

Thank you so much for the tips ! Yesterday I upgraded to Sonar Platinum. Man, that was a 3 hour download and installation, but comes with addictive drums 2, session drums 3 and because of Todd's tip I bought EZ drummer 2 also. So : I will not have any good excuse for producing bad drums in my next song !!!! huh.gif blink.gif unsure.gif

I don't know trillian but will check it out.

Mixing is indeed a huge learning and never ending process and eventually every mixing engineer will develop his own approach and style. It's a profession ! I mentioned it before : my monitors s...ck, really ! And what you can't hear, you can't fix. I have my own little room at house where I installed my home studio. It's great but when I invest in better monitors the room will also need accoustic treatment. What can I say, it's all time and money, right ? But it's so fascinating !!

Even with all those improvements on the way you are already making great music. That's the most important part mate.

I've done a deep research and it seems that Trillian is the best Bass VSTi in the market so give it a try: https://www.spectrasonics.net/products/trilian.php

Now that you have addictive drummer. Check out it's drum kits (very varied) and also all the cool drum loops that includes. I think that you'll find a lot of inspiration for creating new rhythms and ideas. It's been very refreshing for me.

About mixing, there is a lot to learn from youtube. There are tutorials for mixing, eq, compressing, adding reverb, mastering. Everything is there. It's try that this is very personal, but at first is good to learn some professional approaches.

Having a good pair of monitors is helpful for improving our mixes and recordings. I've got a par of Dynaudio some months ago and I have to say that it has been one of my best investment ever!

Hi Gabriel,

The Trilian is awesome, Yep !! That one is on my wishing list !!!As good monitors are too. I was thinking about the Genelec 8040 BPM. But I will have to save some money first and you're absolutely right : you still have to do something with all that great stuff, it's not making music by itself. (But having good gear is also important and stimulating cool.gif !) Thanks for all the tips !!

Nico
