Left Hand Position, Will posture in your left hand effect your speed?

Hey dudes!

I've been wondering if the curled posture of my left hand is costing me speed, if I play with it straight like a classical guitarist all the way up the neck will I be faster? I notice my curled hand position causes my pinky to stay far from the fret board when I play, I'm open to changing the posture if needed (though it will be a lot of work!) what do you guys think? Thanks!

Hello mate

I can't answer your question but those that will be able to would probably get a lot of help from a photo if you can upload one.

Efficiency of movement is certainly a good thing when it comes to speed with both hands, look at players like Rick Graham. There are others that do manage it with fingers flying everywhere but I think they are the exceptions. If a finger only has to move 3 mm to fret the note, it will be able to do it faster than a finger that has to move 2 cm.

Hi mate,

There's is a perfect instrument on GMC to help you with this question : REC program. We (members) are blessed with top notch instructors. Just search for lessons who deal with speed picking -legato speed playing (you'll find hundreds of them). Study a lesson, record yourself, and upload the vid. You will have the luxury of several instructors, judging your playing. If it needs any improvement, they will tell you!

Just try it !
