The good news is you KILLED IT!! The tone is perfect, (share your settings with us/production tips?) and the strat is a great choice here.

Thanks Todd! I don't know exactly how it's happened, but my ability to find tones has really been improving. I have been spending a lot of time on it with the pedal building, etc... so I guess it's just another case of practice makes perfect. This sound is from my Helix and a few analog pedals, I find that combo is often producing some really nice tones. I don't know if I'm right, but I feel like the analog pedals maybe compress a bit more than just an amp even at lower gain settings????

The amp model is a Tweed/Bassman, which is what I often use for classic rock tones. The cabinet impulse is the Catharsis s-preshigh which I discovered from Darius. For pedals I am using an Xotic EP booster, with just a little boost into a ProCo Rat with a low gain mid-filter setting. The delay is a tape echo style from the Helix. Right now I'm really fascinated with the gain staging and kind of find it to be like mixing a can of paint. For a can of paint you can't tell what colors were mixed into it, just like a little of a few gain pedals and your amp can produce a really nice color which feels all your own.

Analogue pedals are certainly capable of squashing things a bit smile.gif The Helix prides itself on it's algorithms, so I"m guessing each block is doing as little compression as possible unless it's a compressor block, in an effort to create an open and organic (e.g. tubey on low gain) sound.

They way you are combining your pedals with your digital gear is working out really well IMHO. I do something similar by using a tube preamp in the fx loop of my 11 rack and using analogue pedals (Fuhrmann Pedals, hand built in Brazil) in front of the 11 rack input. The 11 rack can get good tone by itself, as I"m sure the Helix can. But like you, I"ve found that adding in some actual analogue gear to the signal chain can have positive results smile.gif

Great to see your ear is leading you in good directions! You could try to record an actual amp/cab and not end up with as nice a sound as you already have using what you are using IMHO. Gain staging is crucial and little bits can add up to something very nice instead of using one source for all of it which can overly compress and crush the tone, leaving it with no dynamics.

Great to see you taking the Helix and making it your own by adding your own custom bits smile.gif I wish more folks with AXE FX and and all the other processors would add in some external bits to make their sound a bit more unique. Great to see you doing it smile.gif

Spiff!! Really dig the bit you do about 34 seconds in. Sorta two fingering, chord/lead thingy? I like it wink.gif Very original and sounds quite cool. Very brace choice going pure clean tone as it's a great way to show any mistakes as there is no gain/dist to help cover anything up. Very well constructed and played. Has tonal bits contasted to atonal bits and wads of differing style/technique in the same solo in under a minute.

In short, very well played and a very original take on a classic solo section. You guys have put up smoe really cool takes on this one for sure smile.gif It's a classic tune for a very good reason. It's just darn good. Keep this backing and use it like the others for warm ups and trying new bits etc. smile.gif

Congrats! You just...

LEVELD UP!!!!!!

Here's a relative tab of that section. I sometimes look for combos that can make my poor picking seem faster and move me from one section to another. This is one of them. It is a stair step up two adjacent strings in a scale. I imagine you can use a purely pentatonic scale although I think I intersperse full scale half notes here and there. It's triple feel with the pull off to the drone 6th string.

6th --7p0---5p0---8p0---7p0--10p0---8p0----12p0----10p0-----14p0---12p0-----15p0----14p0----17≈ 15
5th 5-----7-----7-----8-----8-----10-----10------12-------12------13------13-------15------15---------17

I play it a little different as I think I skip a section at the end to make it fit better timing. Probably cause I got lost somewhere wink.gif But the idea is the same. Sometimes I reverse the 4 note sequence (6 if you count the drown) by starting with the second set in the first position and continuing up in that manner.

And there's not actually atonal notes in, I believe all the notes are in Eminor/Gmajor scale. There are just notes from the scale in the wrong place, or in a weird grouping. For instance the three fingered section at the end is really in Eminor/Gmajor just an odd arrangement of intervals. It's a variation of this.

6th------------------------------14sl17
5th--------------------12----13
4th -----------11---11----12
3rd ----10--10---10
2nd --9---9
1st -8

Hello Todd,

It's my usual ten minutes of listening, two or three takes and it's a wrap biggrin.gif Sorry I don't get as much time as I need for these but I do enjoy them and I don't mind not levelling up because it's all good in the end wink.gif

Here is my very basic take, I haven't heard the original in I don't know how many years, I think I'll have to get The Wall on in my car tomorrow cool.gif

Talk about jumping in! That's one of the quickest turnarounds I've seen so far. The clean tone works and I can tell that you have come quite a way from your first Shred Fest Challenge. Progress is a wonderful thing, and it's always good to see. I think the clean tone works as well. Maybe next time put just a pinch of dirt/fuzz/dist on it so that when you make harder strikes you get a pinch of gain, it makes things a bit more dynamic and what not which is never bad smile.gif You Sir, have just...

LEVELED UP!!

NICE!!! The tele is a great choice for this and your playing is spot on per usual! I dig how you combine a very loose and bluesy style with bits of very precise work. It's a nice contrast and reminds me of the Pinky Floydster himself smile.gif The tone is spot on as well. Very natural and organic even though I'm guessing it's from BIAS? Still, sounds like a nice tube amp set to BLUES!!!!

I can hear the bits of the original solo just behind what you are playing as if its playing on a loop in your head while you are playing this one. I can hear both and they both work together quite well imho. I'm wondering if you hear both at the same time as well? It is a rather iconic solo and your bits do it justice smile.gif

In short, well freaking played!!! and you just

LEVELED UP!!!!!
P.S. feel free to correct me if my numbering is off on your badge smile.gif

OPEN INVITE FOR ALL FOLKS PUT OFF BY POLITICS (LEFT AND/OR RIGHT)
I'd like to invite any folks that have been put off by the various political bits to put in a take in the CHALLENGE. There are several folks that have not put in a take in quite a while that I can think of off hand, AKRICH, CRSN, MAREK, SPOCK and anyone else. Go nuts smile.gif

Thanks very much, Todd smile.gif Im a massive floyd fan and all of these have been great fun to play. I dont know how to play the '.. wall' solo but you're right it was kinda playing over in the back of my mind.
Just using the trusty ol' eleven rack for this one, as I have on all the previous ones smile.gif

My bad. I've been far too busy working 7 days a week for the most part since the beginning of July remodeling an old house, so politics has nothing to do with it really. The project is almost complete though and my brother and I are almost ready to get the house on the market. I expect I will have some free time starting in December and then I can start practicing, playing and recording again.

Man that killer! I gotta save NICE HAMER too smile.gif The addition of some better pickups and whatever else you did sure made that thing sound way beyond the stock version. Of course, the player has a bit to do with it as well smile.gif This is the most shreddy on this track and I"m diggin it. That insane tapping bit near the end was just nuts and completely unexpected. Actually the entire solo was unexpected which is always fun smile.gif This solo is so iconic that it's hard to break away from the original imho.

Even when I was jamming to it myself, I kept finding my fingers search for the notes I knew should be there as part of the original solo. Almost without thinking. It was hard to try to put my own bits on it to be honest. You seem to have no trouble there as your bits are all over this thing!! In short very well done and you just....

LEVELED UP!!!!!!
