New Guitar Amp Advice Options

Hi Guys,

I’ve just moved to Vancouver, BC & could only bring my strat and a handful of pedals. I’m looking to join a band so I need an amp (and a good one at that!) but of course I don’t want to empty out my wallet, so I was thinking around the $600 mark on craigslist, so if I get a used amp, I can get something pretty good for that price.

Back home I had a Fender blues deluxe reissue but I always found that it seemed very dry & left a lot of “responsibility” on my pedals? So for solo’s, there weren’t enough sustain for my liking and the guitar didn’t sing as much as I’d of liked. So I’m looking for something that is an all rounder for my pedals and has a nice clean tone but gives me the sustain I need for guitar solos.

I play blues/pop-rock kind of stuff.

Players / tones I like are Mike Campbells from Tom Petty & the heart breakers, also gary moore’s too.

Any suggestions on what I should be looking out for?

From what you describe the Fender school of amps aren't for you, you want something that clips harder but keep in mind the stronger the distortion capability the lesser airy clean tones you'll get from an amp design.

Vox is kind of in the middle of a Fender and Marshall amp but it has such mid.s some love while others hate. Sometime ago a member here (Phil66) got a peavey valveking we were all impressed by the tones the amp is capable of, worth checking that series out.

What he said you sound like a Fender amp guy so maybe a used Fender Twin? You could always buy s pedal board amp (like the 44 magnum pedal)

and use a pedal for amp sim as well like the multi stomp like the one from zoom which has a fender twin in it

Then you could get a 1x12 cab and the entire thing would be very portable. You could run out of the zoom stomp direct to PA as well since it does cabe emulation. Your entire rig could fit on one pedal board

I agree with the Valveking. I have one, and like it a lot. It sounds great, and covers a variety of tones. You can probably pick up a head for around $250-300. Also, try to find a 5150 cab. They sound great, and are very cheap, somewhere around the $200 range.

It sounds decent at lower volumes, but it really starts rocking when you get the volume around 4 and above. Of course, this is very loud, so I don't know if this will be an issue for you. I think you can get a brand new 20 watt combo for under $600. The new ones can switch down to 5W, 1W etc.
