Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Simple A minor Soloing by Darius Wave

Hi Guys, Here's my take of this wonderful lesson. Finally a Darius lesson I can play :-) My focus was mainly on getting the bends right, they were giving me a hard time as they always do :-) Cheers Peter

Hey Peter!

First of all let me thank you for making me happy to see the take over this lesson smile.gif

I believe you know this already but this kind of lessons are a kind of "sounding simple" yet there is much more details to remember than we think there is. It's the magic of details that makes those few simple notes sound more sensitive, emotional and dynamic. At this point you have a very good sketch of the lesson to start working on the true challenge. Most of your bends are pretty nice and well "pitched". I like your gain amount as well. I can feel your right (sorry ...left:) ) hand touch makes you able to master this lesson at a very good level. If you would trust me and give this lesson some more time, I can lead you through all the details.

Let me point what's happening at the moment in a random timline order:

1. Tone - I like that you've chose a bright kind of tone - it has a lot of room for dynamics but I would use a low pass filter to cut some more of presence that is a little fizzy. You can also add some more reverb or random analog delay in the background to add some space.

2. At 0:37 you make two essential mistakes - you move whole right hand too much instead of stretching your finger to reach those higher notes. Second thing is the that you make more of a bend than a vibrato at every repeat of high note. Listen and you'll capture you bend those notes to a little "out of key" pitch. You need to be very carefull. It's easy to overdo the vibrato on 1st string. I would go for faster but shallower motion

3. At 0:18 there is too much of picking instead of very soft legato - those notes should be like a "response on the lat breath" - quiter and warmer at the same time

4. I believe you know what raking is. If not let me know, we'll work on that, In my original take you can notice additional tension boost by making sort of "pre-scratch" through all the strings at some notes. At 0:13 of original lesson video you can notice what I mean. That's what raking is. I know it's not in the tabs...maybe there is no tool for this in GP6 or I haven't found it yet, but it is in all the videos of lesson breakdown.

5. At 0:23 you did repeat the bend while there should be just one bend on 3rd string to reach the e note. Instead of antoher, quick bend,m you should start to vibrate the note

6. At 0:53 the whole trick/challenge is to be able to keep all notes ringing as long as their rhythm value suggest. You cut those too early. I remember you had similar issue in other take of different lesson. It's very important to alwasy let the notes ring as long as they should. Of course it does boost the hardness of position shift and fingers replacement on the fretboard

7. At 0:07 there should be no bend release. The trick is to break it with your picking hand while it's stays on vibrated bend - do not release this wholestep bend

Overall I would highly suggest to be carefull with ring for pinky replacement in your playing. Some shapes in this lesson are quite easy to reach with the pinky and there is no ultra hard bend to be done so you could say the pinky is not strong enough. At some point it simply makes things harder then they are - especially while playign on the high positions of your fretboard.

I guess there are some more moments to point out but for the moment that's what's most visible. Thanx once again for choosing the lesson smile.gif I hope to see another take of yours. All best!

Hi mate,

this lesson seems to be easy but it's not an easy work to play all those nice phrases with feeling and perfection. I think that you are doing a good job but there are many parts that have little issues to adjust.

I don't think that your bending is bad, I think that it's good or very close is the first half and even in the second half where I hear much more important pitch issues but that can be related to your guitar calibration, or maybe to doing too much fingers pressure while playing. You need to check which of these options is the reason why your take sound out of pitch in the higher part of the neck.

I would also tweak your tone. I don't know what you are using but you could use Darius's settings as a starting point since he uses free plug ins (Poulin). Your tone needs to be warmer and more sustain in order to avoid your notes release too early.

Once you fix the previous elements, you can put your attention on vibrato and dynamics. The original take has a very nice and expressive feeling and these two elements are fundamental to achieve it.

Keep on the hard work!

Hi Peter, this is a good choice for a lesson, not only because it sounds great but because the clean tone doesn't allow us to hide behind anything!

Ok, for me the two things that are crying out for attention are:

Tone: It's too fizzy at the moment. I don't quite know how it's got that fizzy quality to it. It could be the setup you've got. Darius suggests looking at the higher end of the EQ spectrum, which is also worth a go.

Vibrato: The whole take would sound more connected if the notes had more vibrato. There's a lot of stark notes that don't have a lot of articulation to them due to a lack of vibrato so they sound a bit 'dead'. This is more noticeable when you play with a clean or lightly distorted setting because we can't rely on hi gain sustain so the effect is that these notes can sound a bit 'small'.

Some vibrato work is definitely something that will benefit your overall sound and just a short while of concentrated effort in this area will give you noticeable results smile.gif
