Rec Level Question

Hi Everyone!

I am a new member having jumped ship from Truefire, largely because there appears to be more of a community spirit on here and I like the accessibility of the instructors. Truefire has good vids but the whole construct is very impersonal!

As a newbie I need a little guidance regarding the REC board and how proficient users are supposed to be before submitting. I am excited to uploaded something for assessment, however I am not sure if I should attempt something I can play comfortably and give a polished performance (probably level 3), or whether I should attempt something more challenging that reflects the upper limits of my current abilities but will probably contain more errors. Which approach would the instructors on here prefer?

Cheers!

I can't speak for the instructors, but I think there's always a point in pushing yourself to become better, but there are several ways of achieving this. I've tended to go for easier levels to get a sense of success and feel more motivated by completing something. But of course going for something that is just outside your comfort zone can also yield progress.

Also as you might have seen people can do several takes on the REC if the first take is not deemed good enough to pass the grade.

I'm sure Gabriel and Todd would like to guide you as much as possible on here, if you want them to do so. They both have mentoring threads, which you might have seen too. Todd has the Bootcamp, which is geared towards techniques I'd say, and Gabriel has several different topics and approaches smile.gif

Also welcome to the site. I hope you will be active and participate in the discussions as much as you can smile.gif

Welcome to GMC! biggrin.gif

Either approach is fine - what matters is that you get feedback. So I would suggest you go for both.

Sometimes the techniques we think we master contain problems, and vice versa. That is why it's so important constantly get the opinion of an instructor.

Hey there! Wellcome to the site smile.gif

As you've noticed, GMC is a family-like community, where not only instructors but more experienced users do help those, who need it.
Todd and Gabriel have a regular guidence threads but of course you can direct your questions to all members, by posting on the forum or writting private messages.

I would go for Kris suggestion. There is no particular limit or terms list for REC aside from...being honest with us and yourself, by uploading single take recordings with no audio editting allowed (assigned to playing of course - anything else can be adjusted the way you want - tone and mix after record). You can upload both - something you feel comfortable with and something near your limits. It will give us best idea on where to spot any issues to fix and how to fix them. It would be also a great audio-visual introduction of yourself to our community smile.gif

Yep, I am currently working on a level 3 'neoclassical solo for beginners lesson' that I am making good progress on, and also a level 5 'Eddie van Halen style' lesson that is fun but tying my fingers in knots smile.gif

Sounds great! I look forward to seeing them in the REC section. I always look at all the takes in there, for the most part anyway. smile.gif It can be very inspiring to check out other players.

Hopefully the level 3 Rec will happen on Sunday, the level 5 may be a couple of weeks off yet smile.gif

Hi mate, Welcome to GMC. Great to see you are interested in the REC. I think it's a very strong part of GMC for students to become better players. Don't worry about it too much and just try it out. You'll soon learn what works best for you and the instructors are very experienced in analysing the takes. Their comments and advices are spot on !!

Good luck man !! smile.gif

Nico is right! The best way is simply to throw something out there, get critique and work on whatever you can improve smile.gif
