Hello folks,
Been meaning to post this since coming on holiday. I posted a track not long back for Todd's Saturday Shred Challenge and after a few seconds the guitar volume went quiet. I didn't know what it was but before we left for the airport I was having a play and the same thing happened. I looked at the amp head (Peavey Valveking 20) and the T1 light had gone to red. When I stopped playing it went back to green. This means the valve is failing.
I'm using the four cable method with a Boss GT 100, I had set the patch to "send and return" and switched off the power amps in the patch (if you don't do that you can't use any amp controls except master vol).
Could I be doing something wrong or should it looked at?
Cheers smile.gif

I did some search and could be a number of things, from small dirt on the jack input to tubes must change. Test without the gt100 and swap cables this should narrow possibilitys properly. After that posting on the Peavey forum might also help as from what I read their support isn't very fast on replying.

Does the T1 refer to a preamp tube? I'll bet so. That kind of behavior really can be due to a bad connection. I have a dozen valve amps and this has happened several times. Get some electrical component cleaner, and take them out and clean them, and push up and down a bit in the socket while it is still wet a bit to clean the socket. Or swap pre amp tubes and see what happens. Sometimes that solves it at least with pre amp tubes. If it is a power tube, just watch out for red plating and turn it off immediately if that happens. I think you will typically hear hum, and then crackling that should alert you to look at the power tubes to see if any is red plating. If so you turn off the amplifier before the tube blows and possibly takes more components with it. Red plating is vacuum tube death rattle. Combo amps are a vacuum tube torture chamber. Not that that has anything to do with the topic, but I once read it and thought it was funny.

Ello folks,
The TSi lights are for the power tubes. Apparently there is a safety circuit to allow the amp to continue working on the remaining tube. Now if I need to change the valves would it be a chance to put different ones in for a different tonal range.

Tube is ‘under current’:
This could be due to incorrect bias, low current due to aging, open circuit due to structural/physical fault or missing filament heater supply.

Tube has gone ‘over current’:
In this case the resettable protection circuit will be switched on to protect against further damage and to allow the amplifier to carry on working with the remaining tube(s). This could be due to bias failure, over-heating of the tube or other fault condition resulting in excessive current draw.

Reset:
In some conditions, with an adequate gap in playing, the protection circuit will auto-reset and allow the tube to be turned back on. If the fault remains then the LED will stay red. In these situations, at a convenient point the amp should be turned off for a few minutes then back on again. If the fault is still there then the amp should be checked by a factory authorized technician for correct bias or faulty/ worn out tube(s).

Well I would guess most companys don't use the nicer/expensive tubes which might explain if they drained but on the other hand it hasn't been that long since you got the amp (still under warrenty?).

If tubes change I always read users commenting the sound getting much better but this might not be the case from what you shared (if its about bias etc.). Do you have a factory authorized technician in your area?

It could be shipped but as its sort of fragile I'd wait for the right time, you have the other amp anyway to continue practicing so no need to rush smile.gif

I'll sort something out when i get back. They ship them anyway and I have the original packaging.
I was hoping it was some sort of setting i could adjust, maybe something to do with 4CM.
Oh well.
Cheers

Sorry to hear sad.gif I'm sure they can fix it for you or maybe ship you a new tube and you might be able to install it yourself. There are wads of youtube vids on tube swaps. But letting a pro do it is never a bad idea smile.gif

If you ever decide to to skip the tube head, wads of folks are raving about this little guy. It's a one rack space unit that is voiced for guitar and sounds like a valve amp from everything I've heard/read.

Thanks Todd but i love this little baby, ugly though it is, loads of recording options with it.
I'll do some tests with the vari class settings and without any 4cm and also without speaker defeat.
Cheers folks

These experiences are valuable for the repair guy to detect where the problem is, make sure to add that note when sending the amp. Hopefully its something easy and inexpensive to fix sad.gif

Folks usually post issues with gear on GMC to get help/suggestions, so it probably seems like bad voodoo with all the bad gear posts smile.gif It's probably just cause folks having gear issues need help and they ask folks they trust smile.gif Thankfully (knock on wood) I have not had any bad gear failures recently. But never say never smile.gif
