Almost brutal . I"m thinking that this could be a revenue stream for you if you are up for it Bands and Record Lables are always looking for someone to create stunning visuals for their "Lyric Videos" and I gotta say you have stunning visuals down to a science You could jump in to making lyric vid backgrounds right away IMHO, if you felt like it. Did you do the song as well? If so, NICE!!! Can you give us some breakdown on your production process and such? It sounds great IMHO! The mix seems well balanced and staged. I"m guessing that somebody with more experience mixing/mastering may have some critique to offer but my ears are saying that it RAWKS. I"m curious as to what you used in terms of hardware/software/plugins? P.S. Please tell me you are putting these on youtube as well as vimeo. I"ll tell you why. Sadly, vimeo simply doesn't have a fraction of the traffic that youtube has. You can often get more eyeballs on accident on youtube than you can manage on vimeo. I"m all for Vimeo, but I don't upload to it anymore. Especially since youtube now offers 4k, so you can go crazy on resolution. BTW what is your youtube channel? I'm in the middle of figuring out a strategy for how to share these videos. Yes, I've created a youtube channel. The problem is, due to the compression youtube uses, even at high resolution, youtube is lower quality video and audio than vimeo. And, with youtube, I don't have any control over the resolution its viewed at. My current thinking is to put a 60 second trailer of the video on youtube and give a link to vimeo for anybody who wants to watch the full version. That way I should be able to get the best of both: reach a larger audience with youtube and provide a way for people who like the video to see a high quality version on vimeo. Which is why so many vfx guys keep their demo reels on vimeo, as well as film makers and such. It makes a great repository for sharing with specific audiences, like your pals here @ GMC But yeah, that's sadly all it's good for given the disparity in traffice between the two so if you use vimeo, you pretty much still need youtube just for exposure, even though the quality takes a hit. Glad to hear you made a youtube channel so that more folks can hopefully get the chance to see your stuff!! You can do whatever you think is best of course But honestly most folks care far less about quality than "easy". They are more likely to watch something that doesn't require them to leave youtube. For a general audience, youtube is adequate. If you want to share with a specific person, then I'd share the vimeo link. But again, you gotta do what you gotta do To make matters even more complex, facebook won't "auto play" vids that are embeds from other sites. They will only auto stream (without audio, then audio starts once a viewer clicks the image) videos that uploaded directly. So anyone viewing a vid of yours on a mobile device, on facebook (which is how most folks access facebook statistically) won't see it auto stream unless it's uploaded directly. I'd say start a 'fan page" just for your art work/animation and upload the vids directly to it. Also, I think the tune works great with your 3D vid. Did you post the link to your youtube channel and I missed it? Can you share again please? Love to subscribe. Also, have you thought about a "Rate Card" E.G. what you would charge for a 3D vid like this to be used as a lyric vid backing? Lables and Indie artists alike all need cool backgrounds for lyric vids and this is certainly cool Upon listening to the track again, I really like the guitar tones and how the overall guitar sound is just plain BIG!!!! I am only now hearing some of the synth stuff that I missed before and some of it is sorta rubbing me the wrong way, but again, I"m one guy. Around 58 seconds in, you can hear an almost "Moog-ish" sounding synth that sorta sounds like a bass line. It's got a proggy vibe to some degree, or at least I've heard proggy bands using that sort of texture, I've just never been a fan of it. Then again, my taste in synths usually runs toward how realistic are the String sections so I'm perhaps not the best guy to be giving a critique. I"m liking the mix and the drums and the guitars. The composition works also. It sound like a "song" and not just riffs in sequence which is the hardest thing to do IMHO once one starts writing their own music. One thing I did notice is that there seems to be "space" for something else. E.g. A guitar melody throughline that comes back in at certain points, serving sorta like a chorus, and other bits that might work as a verse. On the other hand, adding vocals, screamed or otherwise might help as well. It sounds like a great backing track that is waiting for the last layer of vocals, lead guitar or both. In that aspect, it's very "Keith Merrow", in that I often find his early work strikes me the same way. Once he gets to Pillars of creation, he starts using riffs as repeat/chorus bits. However, some more proggy folks, don't go in for song structure at all and instead head more for a less structured approach, sorta like what I'm hearing here. Regarding synths: Well, I create synth plugins for a living, so it makes sense to feature those in my music . Thanks for mentioning Keith Merrow. I wasn't familiar with his music before, but I'm listening to it now. I understand what you're saying about limiting my audience. Like you say, there's a delicate balance between carving out a unique niche with one's style, and finding a style that's popular. @Phil I spent about a week designing the graphics, then the video rendered in about two weeks running continuously on a six-core MacPro. I've done others that took a month to render! @Stenchovdeth Thanks. I was pretty pleased with the video animation on Vakratunda. @Darius I think you'd be surprised to learn how much time I've spent analyzing your tone . @Gabe Yes, I'm trying to reach out to artists who I think would be a good match for my videos. I don't want to make any money at it, but it might be a way to make more people aware of my videos. But I haven't found anybody who is interested yet. I get the the synths are part of the creation It's maybe the gooey nature of the tone that threw me off. It's a well built patch I'm sure, it just catches my ear a bit when I'm listening to spiff guitars. Then again, as a "guitar guy" I'm prone to be biased about such things Keith is a really spiff player and never over plays. Heh rarely does lead work so his rythms have to be melodic enough to maintain the listeners interest. He plays a lot of single note type rythms which are sort of mini leads disguised as riffs, instead of soloing This approach might work well in some of your bits as well? As a relative noob when comes to production I found it very helpful and would definitely like to see more. The new one that you just released "Levante" is really cool. I think Levante has a real kind of organic vibe to it,until those massive power chords and the soul tearing lead edges into the mix. Just awesome bro! Meshuggah went to a video game studio to create 3D renderings of their faces which he then used in the animation. Then they sent him an isolated kick drum track to sync the flashes.
