Hi Gabriel,

I have been "dabbling" with guitar for a long time, starting in my college days 25 years ago. I'll pick up the guitar from time to time, but there are very long breaks of no playing at all. I want to get more "serious" about my playing, but am overwhelmed with all the material out there.

I know some basic chords and a few power chords, and I've played mostly rhythm guitar. I've never learned any scales, and I don't know any music theory. ohmy.gif I would consider myself a beginner, and would like to start learning things the right way! I do not have any experience playing live. After seeing some of the videos on here, I think maybe I am too much of a beginner for you! laugh.gif

As far as musical taste, I am into most genres of heavy metal, particularly Death / Black metal.

Some of my favorite bands are Agalloch, Katatonia, Insomnium, Amorphis, Megadeth, Slayer (all the old 80s thrash bands), Dimmu Borgir, Opeth, and on and on, lol. I've been collecting music for a long time and have lots of bands I like. Probably one of my favorite guitarists is Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth. I really enjoy his ability to fuse different styles of playing and like how he alternates between really heavy parts and acoustic melodies. Same with John Haughm of Agalloch.

I think my main goals are to learn more chords and improve my rhythm guitar playing. Obviously I would like to gain some ability to play lead guitar parts, and work on my dexterity - I've always had problems with the fingers on my left hand not being very quick... Some music theory would also be nice - learning what scales work with what chords, etc.

I don't ever plan on being in a band, but would like to be able to sit down and jam with someone and know how to play a part that goes with what the other person is playing laugh.gif. In five years I would like to be able to sit down and play some songs from the artists I like, and to compose my own music in a home studio.

Right now, I would probably be able to practice a couple of hours most days... I just don't know what to start with or what order to work on things in. I don't currently have any sort of video setup to use for making videos, but I could probably sort something out fairly soon.

Thanks for your help, and I look forward to learning from you!

Regards,

Bryan

Hi Brian, thanks for the info!

The first step would be that you choose a lesson, learn it and record a video in a few days in order to let me check your current level and start designing your customized assignments.

Ok?
