I don't think anyone's mentioned the Synergy modular amp here yet. This was one of the more notable new products at this year's NAMM. It's like the Randall modular, except the modules are made by the actual manufacturers. You buy the amp framework and then plug in a Soldano or Diezel or Friedman module into it. Seems to have some decent momentum behind it.

The idea worked very well for studio gear, you can google "api 500 series". Although the start is kind of expensive, upgrading by buying new modules is very cost efective (as you're not paying for another power section, frame etc...). Lots of companys later on built equiment on the api 500 standards so todays there are many options.

But as said, it only makes sense as one keeps investing. Ideally they should perform better than pedals but it shouldn't be forgotten that these are transistor based not tube. While in studio world, each equipment is considered to have its own vibe but in guitar there's an obsession on the amp being tube.

Transistors? AFAIK the shared preamp tube is a 12AX7.

And if you ever touched a MTS module, you'd know it contains tubes by the heat smile.gif.

I never had the chance to try a MTS module, the comment was for synergy. I mean, naturally 8 tubes (or for only preamps even 2) cannot fit inside that unit so as good as it probably is there's still simulation going on.

I guess you're not going to believe me smile.gif. I can only tell you I saw a 12AX7 with my own eyes smile.gif.

For example; A blackstar ht-1 has 2 tubes in it, one for power and the other for preamp. For the preamp, the signal hits the tube and hits transistors (or the other way around, I'm not sure about which first) and finally goes to the power section.

Its imposibble for 1 tube to generate such distortion alone, so idea is getting the distortion from transistors and then sending the signal to that tube to make it sound more tube like. Its actually the same with pedals that has a tube in them.

But on real amps there aren't any transistors so thats the reason they go up to 4 tubes (for only preamp section, add 4-5 for power) to generate a rich distortion. Thats the reason 1 tube isn't convincing me as having the same sound of the real amp it emulates.

I don't know what else to tell you smile.gif. You can see the tubes right in the preamp modules. The power amp section in the head version uses 6L6 tubes.

I watched 1-2 more videos and now I think I understand, the modules go to the rack (framework) and the rack goes to an amp head and then poweramp tubes are placed am I correct?

There is a preamp version, where the preamp modules with tubes go into a lunch box that has line out, so, for example, you can use it in an effects loop.

And there is a head version where you plug the modules into a rack in a head that also contains a tube poweramp section.

For "hardware guys" this would be spiff indeed smile.gif Very similar to the Randall Modular aproach from a few years back. But in this case, the modules are made by the actual vendor instead of made by randall or another shop to sound like the original vendor. Cool idea and portable smile.gif

However, for the cost of 4 modules you could just buy a kemper and have every amp every made or ever to be made on tap. Maybe someone will profile all these modules and make kemper patches out of them smile.gif That's the thing about kemper, it makes owning amps almost obsolete. Still you have folks that just want to have the actual Amp, call it nostalgia, call it whatever you like, some folks want the actual, big, heavy, amp smile.gif

Still hoping for the playback only kemper at next years NAMM smile.gif
