Hi Kirkhamster! Welcome to Gab's Army!

Please let's summarise your info here again:

- How many time have you been playing guitar? 20 years on and off now.
- Favorite guitarists, bands and musicians. ZAKK-RANDY-JAKE E. LEE- HAMMETT- CHRIS POLAND
- What are your guitar goals? Pentatonic shred. Love the tight playing of Zakk with the beautiful melody of Randy.
- How would you like to you see yourself in 5 years (related to music and guitar)? To just be in the bldg of Randy, etc.
- How many time can you play guitar each day? 30 minutes to an hour.
- Do you have playing live experience? Garage bands
- Which are your strong and weak points with guitar? Can learn fast, good rhythm and riffing. Need help playing fast, alternate picking (getting right and left hand to act as one), sweep picking, and the harder style tapping.
- What do you know about music theory? Pentatonics major and minor, starting to work on natural major and minor now. Chord theory.
- Can you record videos of you playing? I did and yes I can again.
- Share here audios and videos that reflect your current playing.

Gab thank you again for being so patient and it felt good to finally send you a clip of me playing to see where I am at. I have answered your questions in quotations above.

It would be awesome if you could guide me in which of the lessons from your Intensive course to work on each evening supplemented with any particular lessons from Darius Wave, etc. who has a lot of killer alternate picking lessons. I find myself skipping to whatever my fancy is at the moment versus a course style where I have to follow the teacher. I work better this way. Also I have been reading the CAGED theory from the Professor on GMC but if you feel there is any other sources that would be helpful to the soloing style of Zakk that would be great.

Ultimately if I can comfortably play CLEAN and with FEEL Zakk Wylde's Darkest Hour solo as a shorter term goal that would be a brilliant start...

KH

Hi mate, thanks for your info!

Based on your video and your guitar goals, I think that the techniques that need more work are at this point are:

- Vibrato
- Bending
- Alternate Picking
- Economy Picking

As you have 30 minutes for diary practice, you need to use this time wisely.

This is what I recommend for the first week:

ROUTINE #1:

Alternate Picking work (15 minutes):

During this first wek work on parts 1 and 2 from this lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Killer...kk-Wylde-Style/

Bending & Vibrato (15 minutes):

Learn and practice this lesson: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginn...ending-Workout/

Hi mate, this is the video that you've asked via PM:

Thanks GL! This was a big help... Makes sense now. Regarding complimenting the 2 lesson ideas with the ITC and the Guitar Gym exercises, could you let me know which ones and for how many minutes to supplement with? Ideally I'd like to get to where when I can practice I am at 45 minutes to an hour. Finally (for now!), how do GMC'ers keep a diary going of their practice? Cheers

Forgot to add (I always do)- https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...54900&st=40

This was the 2nd and killer guitar routine from the gym course back in 2015. My question is in Block 2 where you play 15 12 15 12 etc. At 120bpm is this using quarter notes or 8th notes, etc? How do you know just by looking at the tabs with the bpm? Silly question but when I see a particular bpm I've always just matched songs to the beat and haven't really worked on keeping the bpm timing with the exercises, etc.

Thx! KH

Hi mate, great to see you using the Guitar Gym. I think that the link answered your question on what to work and how much time. Let's use those routines. Take routine 1 or 2 and work on it for this week.

About your question about rhythm. You need to learn about note values. Most of the Routine 2 exercises are based on triplets which means that you'll play 3 notes on each beat.

Please check out this: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=48918

If you start with these topics:

How to Read Time Signatures

How to Read Whole Notes

How to Read Half Notes

How to Read Quarter Notes

How to Read 8th Notes

How to Read 8th Note Triplets

You'll learn what you need to know to understand how to read the licks.

Gab I really enjoyed Andrew's reads... I now have a much better understanding of timing. There was one thing that seemed missing but I looked it up and was curious on in reference to Routine 1, Block 2 (https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_forum/index.php?showtopic=54900&st=0) Here we do not have triplets, the notes are quarter notes grouped into beams of 4 notes. Side question- Is it better to use the word grouping or beams when notes are strung together like this or in the triplet form, etc.? What is the professional music lingo for that?

So the main question is since we do not have bars on this exercise and the notes are grouped in 4's does this mean that the goal is to play 4 quarter notes in one beat at 120bpm as its directed on the tab? So 8 5 8 5 in one beat?

Thank you as always!

Hi mate, do you refer to this exercise?

Attached Image

This is 1 measure and those are 16th notes so you'd play 4 notes per beat. Does it make sense?

GL yep I am referring to this exercise... So if the entire exercise is one measure/bar and they are all 8th notes I am confused on the time signature now lol. The reason why I would play 4 notes per beat is because of the way I see the notes grouped. Otherwise-

The signature is 4/4 which means we will have 4 quarter notes in a measure right? We can break them up in different ways but ultimately we need a total of 4 quarter notes to be accounted for? In this measure we have 16- 8th notes. But unless I am crazy 4 quarter notes should equal 8 eighth notes and here we have a total of 16 eighth notes correct?

Please help! Best

My fault, we have 16th notes on that measure (I've just fixed my comment). So 1 quarter notes is equivalent to four 16th notes.

Is it clear now?

CLEAR. Each beam is 4/16 or 1/4 which matches with the time signature for the bar smile.gif Now I just need impeccable timing haha

Hi Gab! Sorry if I've been out of touch. Just crazy like we discussed. I have been working on my chromatic warm ups for about 10 minutes and have been using Routine 1 you gave me. I am smooth up to 130bpm and from there my picking tightens up and it's not clear. I can do it but it's not clean and we need it to be clean! Any recommendations aside from good old repetition? I did watch Darius' alternate picking video last night on YT so I will try some position shifting of my hand or circle picking maybe?

Tonight I will work on the bending technique video! CHEERS

Hi mate, the secret is to economise movements. You need to make small movements and try to find the most effective way for you to economise movements. It would be helpful to see a video of you playing it to give more specific feedback.
