Guitarists can stop buying or at least wishing guitar gear, so let's share here what's the last piece of guitar or music related gear that you've bought and how it affected your playing, practice, or happiness. biggrin.gif

The last thing that I've got is a RME Babyface Pro interface. It definitely improved the overall quality of my audio system thanks to the high quality converters. I had a motu 828 in the past which was great but it broke down and never could be repaired. I've been using a M-audio fast track for 2 years until I could get this upgrade. I'm very happy with it.

What about you? Last piece of guitar gear that you've bought?

It's going to take time but I'm going to love it. I am sure it will match the Atomic for tones. I'm struggling to get a Vai FTLOG tone and a Jack White tone for the JW lesson. I managed on the Amplifire but I think I was lucky because the FTLOG tone was a preset and I found something close for the JW tone.

I guess the last thing I really bought outright was my Baja Telecaster HERE because the LT was a panic trade in. I love that guitar like it is my own wife, it's almost organic, it's hard to explain but it still gives me butterflies in the stomach when I think about it.

Cheers

Last year I went nuts on a buying spree just to try out gear and sell it back to ebay, I tried old units like the GNX2 and GNX1, the ART SGX, the digitech GENISIS the ART 80/80, etc. It was all great fun smile.gif But not one of them was a keeper for me. My trusty GNX3 finally died which was sad, as it's honestly the best sounding multi fx with amp emulation that I"ve ever tried other than my 11 rack. So I guess I'd have to say, the 11 rack smile.gif I'm still thrilled with it and it's handy software editing interface.

Well, it might not be a buying spree but since last summer I have bought:

Gibson SG Standard HighPerf
Fender American Std Stratocaster
Harley Benton TE70
Focusrite Scarlett 6i6
+ some Kemper profile packs, pick, straps etc.

Before that I hadn't bought much except my Kemper for 6-7 years, so I guess it started to move with the Kemper... but slowly. Then I got the SG... slighty faster. Then the rest and now I'm here, trying to progress my playing.

As for the Harley Benton - that's kind of an experiment. I read a lot about them, they got some review that said 'good for their price' so for 140 euros - why not? In the original state it's a really OK guitar for 140e. After I switched the pickups to Fender Texas Specials it transformed into a guitar that pick up to play almost as often as the other ones.

The newest pieces of gear I have acquired were purchased together. A Roland Quad Capture and a set of JBL LSR 305 monitors. Sadly I haven't yet had the opportunity to use them other than listening through the monitors which sound great.

That's a nice way to try stuff. That's not possible in Argentina. The try and send back doesn't work here.

Getting a good pair of monitors is a very wise decision. Well done.

I haven't bought much for a while. Although I didn't play regularly for decades because Life required certain priorities, that didn't stop me from buying stuff. Once a Guitarist always a Guitarist. So I've accumulated gear over time and am relatively satisfied with my current stuff even if I get itchy palms when I see cool guitars or new amps.

I have other hobbies at the moment that take precedence.

But, the last piece of gear that truly affected me was an AxeFX XL. Now, I have a couple cool amps I love (Flexi50, RG88, a very old Fender) and honestly sitting in front of a thick 2x12 just 'feels' different than digital. But, the ease of using the AxeFX and the sound even at very low volumes in a busy house has come a very long way from prior digital gear (a lot of it I've used in the past as playing thru a real amp even with an attenuator was simply not enjoyable).

I must admit, I'm a tweaker. I like to take things apart and look under the hood. Aside from the sound stability at very low volumes and the ease of digital recording, the AxeFx taught me a lot about signal chain, effects placement, speaker impact, and a how to sculpt a sound towards something I wanted. I couldn't really do this analog. The cost would be incredibly prohibitive just in peddles alone.

After trying many digital methods and guitar multi-effects boxes of sound production, I found the AxeFx had finally approximated something I would actually consider using live and that I wished I had when I played live for fun more than a decade ago in a wide ranging cover band that played everything from Elvis to GnR in a single set just for fun.

As a caveat. When I bought my AxeFx there was no such thing as a Kemper and nothing else comparable. I would still probably have bought an AxeFx versus a Kemper. Not because of how it sounds (I honestly think they are pretty comparable boxes), but because (in my limited research) it lets me fiddle with all the stuff under the hood far more easily than just loading a patch. And I like messing with things like tube bias and cap specifications, hence why my first amp was a Flexi50. That and because where I was playing there were no amp techs, so I needed to fix it or replace tubes on my own.

Gotta say that is a VERY nice and flat response curve!! They have pretty much no low end but that's ok, speakers like this are really meant to see how your mix will "translate" to standard consumer devices. Folks used the "AURATONE" or as they were known the "HORROR TONE" speakers for this purpose for decades. I'd like to try a pair of these, thanks for the tip!

BTW the Auratone run $350 a pair!! They sound like crap, but they are meant to. It looks like the iloud run $300 a pair which I gotta say seems a bit high for plastic encased speakers. But then again, the "horror tones" run about the same money.

My advice is never ever (ever!) judge a speaker from a graph, oldest marketing trick in the book. Graphs represent such a small part of whats going on, actually when taken time one would notice every other monitor in the market is super flat as well smile.gif

Professionally, small monitors were developed for TV/radio vans for quick editing. Can also be seen on small radio/tv stations for basic editing purposes and maybe a check to see is the audio sounds decent on crappy tv speakers. The Auratone Todd mentioned had a similar use but favored more by sound studios (along with ns10m).

It's only natural such monitors entered the homestudio relm. I think together with headphones, a lot can be done. While I haven't heard the ik stuff, I did spend some time years ago with small but high-end genelecs. Sure doesn't feel the same as a big speaker but with the right expectations they were solid.

Good advice smile.gif One should buy speakers with your EARS not your EYES. But I seldom buy without seeing the graph. It's just part of the information one needs IMHO before making a decision.

These do seem like nice and small, and flat, monitors. Also they seem built to allow mixes to translate well to a variety of consumer electronics. Which is handy. I would not rely on them as my main monitors though. They just have too limited of a frequency range. But that's just me smile.gif They seem like they would make a good contender to replace the small speakers in a given setup, e.g. whatever is being used for the "auratone" range testing.

Todd
