Hello folks, here we go again, switch my computer on, try to record something for my thread with Gab and no can do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm using Win10 64 bit.

Problem 1:
Whenever I try to record, I arm the track, then when I press CTRL R I get a message saying "Can't write to recording files, does the directory exist?". YES IT DOES because I opened it from the directory. I also get the same with a new project!!!!! I used to be able to just create a new project and start recording even if I hadn't saved the project file yet.

Problem 2:
I can't save a project. Even one I've just opened that I saved yesterday!!!! Both "save" and "save as" give me the same message, "Error creating project file! Project not saved!" If I try to save to a different location it says "You don't have permission to save in this location. Contact the administrator to obtain permission would you like to save in the philh folder instead?". The philh folder is in C:>users>philh

I really hope you can help. The same issues have been posted in the Reaper forum but the fixes suggested aren't relevant to me .

Thanks for your time smile.gif

UPDATE:
The only thing I did differently was I accidentally put it into sleep mode instead of shut down. I remember many years ago on Win95 or 98 that I had problems if I put it into hibernate. Could this be something similar?

You sleep mode comment makes sense as I also remember 1-2 issues in the past because of it. Does re-installing reaper work?

Hey Phil, as Mertay says, that Sleep Mode comment rings a bell with me too.
As stupid as it sounds this is always my Brothers first bit of advice;- Turn it off and then back on again!! Surprising how often that works as a fix!!!

I'm with ya wink.gif Avoid "Sleep Mode" on your studio computer IMHO. Just turn it on when working, and turn it off after you save and your done working.

Thanks folks, Yeah Todd, I was hasty with the left mouse and clicked it as my cursor went over the "sleep" marker mad.gif

I did a system restore which I didn't think Win10 had because if you search for it from the start menu it doesn't find it, you have to search for recovery and it is in there.

It must have happened when I put it into sleep mode because the event time coincided and it said in the description, "Microsoft Visual C++ 2015 Redistributable (x86) - 14.0.24215"

It's all sorted now. What does sleep mode do that causes this kind of thing?

Thanks

Phil

Well the problem is back but I now know what it is. I had to uninstall Bitdefender because that is the only way to disable during the tour that system restore does. After checking everything was working, I reinstalled Bitdefender. Problem returned. The latest update makes every file in "my documents" a protected file. You then have to either unprotect and/or allow certain apps/programs to make changes.

Just thought you should all know.

Cheers

BOTTON LINE:
If using an "Air Gapped" computer is just not an option. Just be extra careful at all times when connected to the internet and when doing music, disconnect and turn off your utilites, like bit defender etc. Your experience should be much more smooth.

Sounds like BIT DEFENDER is causing problems and should be avoided at all costs on any rig that's meant for music. After all, windows has it's own security bits built in right? Some folks do seem to claim they are a joke though. But yeah, if some utility is going to mess with your recording, i'd say GET RID OF IT! I don't use anything that messes with recording or mixing but then again I'm on a Mac so it's a bit of a different world.

In an ideal world, your MUSIC COMPUTER would be "AIR GAPPED" E.G. a gap of air between the network port and the router meaning it's not connected to the internet/network in any way including WIFI.

This sounds crazy I know. Especially these days. However, in many pro studios you'll find that the machines hooked up to the mixing desks/speakers are "Air Gapped". just to keep them protected from the many wonky bits on the web. Also, this means the machine DOESN"T have to have Bit Defender or any other utility as it's never online. Such machines are updated by an admin using a "safe" laptop (one with wads of bit defender like apps) and it's job is to get updates from the web and transfer them to the air gapped machine. Via external drive, usb drive, etc. never by email as the primary music machine can't get email cause it's Air Gapped smile.gif

I know this sounds like a pain and it is. Sadly it's one of the best ways to keep your music computer clean and free of drama.

what version of Bit defender do you have? Im using bit defender as well but Ive not had that issue with it making files protected.
Although I do think BD and other anti virus programs are always at the core of problems.

Internet Security 2018. It was just an auto update that added a new function that was switched on by default. I know where to look in future wink.gif

I've seen that kind of thing quite a bit. On windows machines running external security programs, things get turned on by default that end up causing other difficulties. For folks that have to use one machine for everything and can't air gap it, it's just part of the deal sadly sad.gif Glad you found it!
