So first I used an analyzer to analyze this;

I only analyzed (analyzer set to average) the first 30-40 seconds as he almost plays the same thing, this is the result;

[attachment=46583:Untitled3.jpg]

Then I went to my rig, my pedals and the boss gt1. All distortion was coming from the pedals, the solo tone I've been using for a long time so I never touched the pedal settings.

I first foud the delay and hint of reverb by ear on the gt1, then experimented with amps and cab.s. With each amp or cab. that I thought was close (tried 2 amps and 3 cab.s I think...it took a while...), I opened an analyzer and played the riff.

When I got remotly close with an amp+cab. then I opened an extra eq and tried to get as close as possible to the tracks original analyzed responce. Finally I grabbed the backing track from youtube and recorded this. The more I played the same thing more I sucked so excuse the playing biggrin.gif

I'm impressed! You are very close. I feel that your tone is lacking some boost around 3k/5k, comparing it with the original sound. Don't you think so?

But the overall feel is very close!

Thanks! smile.gif

Yeah I think I made the reverb tail too long and thats what caused it, funny enough I actually used the plate reverb on the gt1 cause the hall or spring aren't so good to my ears smile.gif

Aside that, also with the album the guitar tone sounded a bit darker to me. I also tried jamming with this tone and even this one is super bright when testing on various youtube backing tracks.

My plan is to further tweak the modulation a bit more but later on probably just add some bass and use it as my everyday shred tone. Originally my idea was to get close to a solo tone I liked as close as possible then personalize it to my needs.

Thanks smile.gif

I probably played that part for nearly 20 times when trying eq stuff, one would think I should have gotten better but it got worse with every take laugh.gif

Lesson learned, don't use stereo delay with stereo reverb on sustaining distortion smile.gif

I think depending on how long I hold a note, phase issues happened. I made the reverb mono, this helped a bit but not perfect...this is why a good digital reverb is expensive I guess smile.gif

for personal use, I'll probably adjust the processor to toggle between a big delay and reverb but not both. To my knowledge most shredders don't use any reverb when soloing anyway...

NICE!!! You NAILED the vibe of the VAI tone. Which is NOT easy at all IMHO. Many folks try, most folks fail. You didn't so super congrats there smile.gif GABE has a great point per usual in that steve and many guitarists give a bump at 3 and 5k to get the guitar tone to "cut" through the mix a bit better. Even on the neck pickup.

Are you using the same pickups as vai btw? Also can you share that patch?

I can tell you its nothing like steve's 7 string smile.gif a mahogany ibanez, dimarzio air norton and tonezone (currently stock but opened them up a bunch of times and this changed their sound, I modify them whenever I get bored smile.gif ) with all electronics replaced biggrin.gif

All the distortion is coming from an ehx glove boosting a metalzone but I guess the mt-2 alone should work fine too. If anyone has a mt-2 with a boss gt-1 (maybe gt100 can work too, not sure), I'll gladly share the preset settings. The mt-2 in the gt processors didn't do it for me.

But what I can say is don't mind the comments about the mt-2 on the internet and the one I use I got for peanuts and probably I'm the 5-6th owner biggrin.gif most struggle with its eq but finding the right settings as can be heard is very rewarding!

Quick update, I tried to get the highs better but couldn't nail it to sound like the album although the analyzer was showing close results.

I also kept hearing a chorus like fx on the album but couldn't get the chorus to sound like it...anyway turns out it was a stereo widener adjusted so "wide" that it has a huge impact on the tone.

Since the processor doesn't have a widener this is the end for me on experimenting. Was fun and I got a really cool solo tone as reference to create more presets smile.gif
