It allows longer scale for the lower strings and shorter scale for the lighter strings. For 8 string guitars it's a serious improvement in playability IMHO. I've played the DEAN COOLEY 8 that isn't fanned and it's got a GREAT neck which is thinner than the COOLEY 7!!! But even with 8 gauge strings, the 26.5 scale length of the standard 8 was a bit much, even though it's shorter than many 8 strings guitars which run 27.5. The result is more tension on the strings that you normally bend and use vibrato on (E.G. G/B/high E) which gives the guitar it's expressive character. I found that I was more likely to end up just playing open string chuggs, (like many folks that play 8 string guitars) and not do as much bending or vibrato when using the 8 vs using my 6 which is 25.5 scale. The FANNED FRET setup gets around this by shortening the scale of the ihgher strings and thus making the instrument expressive again by reducing tension on the strings that need it most. So in case you are wondering what this fanned fret stuff is about, that's it! It's not cosmetic, not meant just to look cool, it actually serves a purpose. I don't find it needed on 7 strings as my 7 string is also 25.5 scale. But I can really see it on an 8. I have yet to find an 8 that I found comfy enough to keep in my permanent collection and I've owned half a dozen 8 strings from various builders. All of them seemed to aggrivate my carpal tunnel syndrome at some point and I gave them all up. He is just pointing out that you can run your scales down two more strings basically. When I first got a 7 string I realized I had to learn my scales down one more string eat each position, then yet another for the 8.
